In this book the author studies one of the documents contained in the Ayer MS 1515, commonly known as the Popol Wuj (or Vuh). This text constitutes a fragmentary but not necessarily coherent corpus of writings, however, it still is a very important piece of the cultural and epistemological discourse of some of the pre-colonial Mesoamerican civilizations. Another important characteristic of this text is the superposition of multiple re-phonetizations and translations to which the text has been subjected. This transforms it into a text written under conditions of coloniality that encompasses several layers of meanings intersected by Western concepts. The …

Photocopy of a typescript diary kept by David Barrow, a pioneer Baptist minister, during his trip to Kentucky and the Northwest Territory of Ohio. He visited family members, often preached at religious gatherings, and observed peace negotiations between the United States and various Indian tribes at Fort Greenville. Beginning in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, he traveled through Pennsylvania, Kentucky, the Northwest Territory, Eastern Tennessee, and North Carolina, before returning to his home in Virginia.

Typescript copy (prepared in 1911) of Marcus Bearden DeWitt’s pocket memorandum book from March-June 1863 and May 1865. A chaplain with the 8th Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A), DeWitt chronicles conditions during the Civil War, including camp life, travel, family visits, and religion. Also includes “A Sketch of My Life," a short autobiography written by DeWitt, and a memorial written by one of his children.

King of Masks represents a particular type of mythic film that includes within it references to an ancient sacred story and is itself a contemporary recapitulation of it. The movie also belongs to a further subcategory of mythic cinema, using the double citation of the myth—in its original integrity and its re-enactment—to critique the subordinate position of women to men in the narrated world. To do this, the Buddhist myth of Miao-shan, which centralizes the Confucian value of filiality, is re-applied beyond its traditional scope and context.
