Major contributions to the advancement of surgery occurred at the turn of the 20th century. Theodor Billroth was in the midst of revolutionizing abdominal surgery, whereas Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister were making landmark strides in antisepsis, forever changing the foundations of surgical thinking. Undoubtedly, Theodor Kocher’s (Fig. 1) exposure to these and other giants had a major influence on his career and contributed to his success and ascent as the first, and one of only 10, surgeons ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Is China A Responsible Developing Country? Climate Change Diplomacy And National Image Building, Sanna Kopra
Global Asia Journal
A state’s image is an important resource for wielding national power in global politics. Its prestige and reputation often influence the interactions with other states. As an emerging superpower, China is under pressure to shoulder more responsibility for tackling global climate change. The West has criticized China as a “climate criminal” that threatens global climate stability. In response, the Chinese government implemented a series of comprehensive programs to improve its image abroad. This paper examines China’s national image building in the realm of international climate politics. It draws on the official rhetoric and policy statements to discuss the innovative strategies …

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles
Baron Guilluame Dupuytren was a French anatomist and surgeon who practiced during the 1800s and is considered by some to be the most brilliant and gifted surgeons of his time. His contributions to the field of surgery are quite extensive, yet his eccentric personality and attitude toward his colleagues, students, and patients raises a very interesting question: could Dr. Dupuytren (Fig. 1) and his many contributions to the field of surgery have thrived in today’s era of professionalism? The concept of professionalism is emphasized to medical students starting from day one of their medical training. How would Dr. Dupuytren, an …

On Sir Charles Bell’S The Hand, 1833, Peter J. Capuano
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This essay explores the cultural context in which Sir Charles Bell’s 1833 Bridgewater Treatise was published by focusing on the work as a culmination of his deep religious faith, his Edinburgh anatomical training, and his occupation as a surgeon at the Leeds Infirmary. It argues that The Handwas not merely an extension of Paleyan natural theology but also an important response to the era’s struggle with the grim physical reality of the supersession of manual labor by automatic manufacture.

Presentation of a paper originally published as “Altruism and the Administration of the Universe: Kirtley Fletcher Mather onScience and Values.” Zygon 46.3 (Sept 2011):517‐35.
Few American scientists have devoted as much attention to religion and science as Harvard geologist KirtleyFletcher Mather (1888–1978). Responding to antievolutionism during the 1920s, he taught Sunday school classes, assisted in defending John Scopes, and wrote Science in Search of God (1928). Over the next forty years, Mather explored the place of humanity in the universe and the presence of values in light of what he often called “the administration of the universe,” a term and …

Radiation Oncology At Thomas Jefferson University: A Specialty Emerges As A Department Evolves, Eric Gressen Md, Ben W. Corn Md, Adam P Dicker
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
Jefferson Radiation Oncology has maintained over fifty years of excellence led by only four chairmen. Dr Kramer after receiving his medical training inLondonled the department into the modern megavoltage era while creating the first independent academic radiation oncology department in the country. He was well-respected nationally as a leader and advocate for the specialty and he mastered the execution of progressive ideas that have raised the standard for the profession. The creation of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) was critical in developing trials to expand the management and treatment of malignancy. The Patterns of Care Study (PCS) educated the …

"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
From 1747 to 1765 Scarborough created a safety net to keep its maritime dependents from becoming impoverished. A web of kinship connections that permitted sailors to move between land and sea as well as between maritime roles as they aged; the employment of maritime servants; the extensive hiring of elderly seamen; the use of the Seamen’s Sixpence after legislative reform in 1747 to develop locally operated seamen’s hospitals for the benefit of sailors and their families; and strong community support of the hospitals worked together to provide a social safety net that was, by eighteenth century standards, robust and effective.

Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert P. Forbes
Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert P. Forbes
Torrington Articles
Race, we are told, is a “social construction.” If this is so, Thomas Jefferson was its principal architect. Jefferson consciously framed his only published book, Notes on the State of Virginia, to check the rising status of Africans and to combat growing critiques of slavery from America’s European friends. Jefferson did this by importing the slaveholder’s sense of slaves as chattel into an Enlightenment world view, providing a metaphysical foundation for prejudice by transmuting the traditional Christian concept of the saved vs. the damned into material and aesthetic terms. Recasting in quasi-scientific language the ancient doctrine of the mark …

The End Of Nowhere: The History Of Tuberculosis In Ri, Emma G. Sconyers
Senior Honors Projects
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately one third of the word's current population had been infected with tuberculosis. Prior to the 1940's TB was considered an incurable, chronic affliction. Historically, many people were forcibly detained in tuberculosis sanatoria to lessen the spread of the disease; my great granfather being one of them. In 1939, without warning, he was taken from his pregnant, jobless wife and one-year-old daughter, who were left to fend for themselves for two years without government planning or assistance. He spent those two years at Wallum Lake Sanitorium in northern Rhode Island, a place my great-grandmother's …
