Responsible government began in New South Wales after two decades of radical democratic agitation. Radical intellectuals from England, Ireland, Scotland and Europe mobilized the working men and women of the colony to resist the aristocratic form of government proposed by pastoralists and city capitalists. There was violence on the streets and goldfields, and some notable electoral victories. As 'a great fear' gripped the local elites the British government forced them to accept a more liberal form of representative government in the belief that this would placate the democrats and keep the colony safe for British imperial needs.

Power Structure And Recent Political Development In Korea, Seok Choon Lew

Democratic government is still comparatively young in South Korea. This paper outlines the development of the constitutional and political structures since 1948, noting in particular the complex history of political parties, which are often closely tied to prominent politicians. The paper then reviews the current political situation under the Roh Moo Hyun administration and examines the broad array of presidential candidates hoping to succeed him. Crucial to an understanding of modern Korean politics has been the conflict between the industrialization generation and the democratization generation, which is still relevant today.

Born in New York City to what he describes as “a very privileged childhood…in every possible way,” J. Vinton (“Vint”) Lawrence attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University. Recruited by the CIA, he was sent to Laos in the very early days of “Operation Momentum,” the campaign to train and arm the Hmong to fight against Communist forces. On more than one occasion, the historical record has implied that Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was a hastily composed document: an impulsive reaction to military events surrounding the Civil War. In fact, it was an evolving idea that began to take shape long before Lincoln had read the initial draft of the Proclamation to his cabinet on July 22, 1862. This work attempts to explore the normalized state of emergency in Egypt. For more than two decades, Egypt has existed under the control of emergency legislation designed to curb civil and political rights. This work examines the current state of emergency within the framework of socio-economic, philosophy, and Egyptian history in order to assess the rationale of its raison d'etre.

The work commences with a brief history of Egypt under the rule of the Mamluk dynasty prior to European incursion and the development of the nation-state. It then discusses the European occupation, the rise of the nation-state, and the current …

This thesis comparatively analyzes the experiences and roles of women in the United States and Caribbean Black Power Movements. Using the Black Panther Party and Trinidadian National Joint Action Committee as case studies, the researcher isolates similarities and differences among women in these two regions of the African Diaspora. Black Feminist and Caribbean Feminist theoretical perspectives aide in understanding how the interlocking social forces of race, class, and gender impacted women participating in the Black Nationalist movement of the late 1960's and early 1970's.

This article explores differences and similarities in approaches to environmental history in Canada and the United States. It begins by assessing the historiographical and political traditions that influenced the growth of environmental history in America in the 1970s, and then compares these traditions to similar trends in Canada, asking the question: are the basic premises of environmental history, as they developed in the U.S., appropriate to the Canadian national experience? The article then assesses similar ways of exploring reciprocal relations between society and nature in a single cross-border area: a bioregion consisting of Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces to the …

The Russian Empire was composed of diverse nationalities, as was the revolutionary movement that sought to overthrow it. Georgians played a prominent role in both the evolution of the empire and the revolutionary movement. Russia offered Georgians protection from nearby Islamic states, an administrative and military alliance against the enduring mountain insurgency in the North Caucasus, and institutional and intellectual resources in their historic struggle to build a nation and overcome regional fragmentation.

(First paragraph) On the 16th of May, 1937, at around 6 p.m., a striking 29-year-old Italian woman wearing a finely tailored green suit, white hat and gloves left a suburban Paris bal musette, or dance hall, and walked quietly toward a bus stop. Depictions of the Mediterranean Sea figured prominently in steamship lines' publicity during the years of Fascist rule in Italy. These images of the sea promoted and publicized Italian foreign policy aims and aspirations as they shifted over the years from 1922 to 1942. At the same time, the images' emphasis on Italy's maritime heritage provided a rallying point for Italian national identity. Mussolini's government used Italian associations with the Mediterranean to foster a national as opposed to regional consciousness and to project abroad a vision of a culturally-unified and powerful Italy.
