On The Aviation Trail In The Wright Brothers' West Side Neighborhood In Dayton, Ohio, Mary Ann Johnson

Following in the Footsteps of the Wright Brothers: Their Sites and Stories

The West Side Dayton neighborhood where Wilbur and Orville Wright lived, worked and invented the airplane includes five historic buildings or building sites, all within a block or two of each other, that represent the five major periods in the brothers' lives. This paper tells the story of the five sites at three different periods in time: 1) when they were occupied by the Wrights during the turn of the last century, 2) when they were discovered by Aviation Trail in 1981 and 3) today, in 2001. The stories of the earliest period show the historical significance of each of …

From Wright Flyers To Aerial Thermography: The 1910 Wright Brother's Hangar At Huffman Prairie, Michael L. Hargrave, Dave Babson, Thomas L. Sever, Dwain K. Butler

Following in the Footsteps of the Wright Brothers: Their Sites and Stories

The Huffman Prairie Flying Field, now a National Historic Landmark located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, was the scene of many of the Wright Brother's activities between 1904 and 1916. Following their remarkable success at Kitty Hawk in 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright returned home to develop a versatile and marketable airplane. They used Huffman Prairie as a site to test aircraft and train pilots. There they constructed (in 1904, 1905, and 1910) a series of modest structures to house their aircraft. While each of these buildings is historically important, the 1910 hangar is the focus of this paper. From …

Rumors Of Flight: The Photographic Record Of The Wright Brothers At Huffman Prairie, Jeffery Alan John

Following in the Footsteps of the Wright Brothers: Their Sites and Stories

Today, one hundred years after the Wright Brothers conducted their research leading to powered flight, we can revisit the period between 1900 and 1905. We know what the brothers did, and how they did it, largely because the Wrights conscientiously recorded their work both visually and verbally. In this sense, they showed an extraordinary dimension of their inventiveness. The camera was an important instrument of their research. The Wright Brothers as inventors had a unique understanding of the power of photography to make an accurate representation of reality (Nolan, 1984). As a result, the Wright Brothers have left us a …

Following in the Footsteps of the Wright Brothers: Their Sites and Stories

On a cold and blustery day in December of 1903 near the town of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, Wilbur and Orville Wright, haul an ungainly looking craft from a shed and get ready to attempt a feat that has never been accomplished before - to fly a heavier-than-air powered airplane with a person on board.

The weather conditions that day were terrible. The temperature was 34 degrees F and the winds were steadily blowing between 20 and 30 miles an hour [McFarland, 395].1 The wind chill (according to modern tables) was around 8 degrees F …
