Rural African Americans And Progressive Reform, Debra Reid Jan 2000

Rural African Americans And Progressive Reform, Debra Reid

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Histories of African Americans in the postbellum rural South tend to depict sharecroppers and tenants as victims of the crop lien system, racism, and the capitalization of agriculture. This paper concentrates instead on rural re? formers who celebrated life in the country and believed that comfortable homes, better schools, and wholesome residents could free blacks from bondage. Their agrarian ideology reflected Euro-American influences; most believed in the Jeffersonian rhetoric that linked land ownership to virtue and independence. Because they realized that the crop lien system made prop? erty acquisition an impossible dream for most blacks, they advocated diversification and sustainable …

Legislating Against Reality : The Political Conflicts And Context Of The Seventh-Century Merovingian Church Councils, Gregory Burgas Jan 2000

Legislating Against Reality : The Political Conflicts And Context Of The Seventh-Century Merovingian Church Councils, Gregory Burgas

Dissertations and Theses

The bishops of the seventh-century Merovingian Church were often drawn from the secular aristocracy after long careers in local or royal government. They remained involved in politics even after becoming . bishops, and these entanglements occasionally dictated their actions. Historians have examined these actions by using the chronicles and hagiography of the seventh century, but not by using the Church councils.

I translated the last five general councils of the Merovingian Church from the Latin into English for the first time, and then examined the councils in their political context. In the seventh century, the bishops were asserting their independence …

Nuevo México, Escuintla: A Critical Analysis Of The Guatemalan Refugee Resettlement Process, Martin J. Wera Jan 2000

Nuevo México, Escuintla: A Critical Analysis Of The Guatemalan Refugee Resettlement Process, Martin J. Wera

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The 1994 "Agreement on Resettlement of the Population Groups Uprooted by the Armed Conflict" set in motion an initiative to repatriate the estimated 70,000 Guatemalan refugees in Mexico on tracts of land bought by the government and sold to communities of returnees. However, five years after their relocation, the resettlement of Nuevo México has stalled, being stymied by questions of the land sale and on whom do certain responsibilities for the implementation of the accords fall.

As I will argue, the reason behind this failure to competently implement the goals set forth in the accord and effectively carry out the …

The Use And Manipulation Of Che Guevara's Image An Ideas By Fidel Castro And The Cuban Government, Erich P. Rice

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The use and manipulation of Che Guevara's public image and ideas by Fidel Castro and the Cuban government. In my project I answered the question, In what ways have Fidel Castro and the Cuban government used and manipulated Che Guevara's public image and ideas within Cuba to rally support for the Cuban Revolution and its policies. My thesis is Fidel Castro and the Cuban government have used Che's image and ideas to gain support for their various economic and political initiatives within Cuba, and have also adapted their usage of his image and ideas to changes in outside political and …

Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller Jan 2000

Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

As we struggle at the turn of the century to define and implement “sustainable forestry”— the next stage in the evolution of forest management in North America and the world—it is important to realize that its components have strong roots in the forestry profession. This article examines the relationship of forests and forestry with social equity issues during the last century. In the end, the author leaves us with a question: can sustainable forestry as we understand it today lead to conflict resolution? If not, what lies beyond sustainable forestry?

Dancing Boys, Anthony Shay Jan 2000

Dancing Boys, Anthony Shay

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

The informal, and occasionally formal, institution of the dancing boy--the term used by most Western writers in their descriptions of the Islamic world--has been attested for centuries by European observers throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, as well as the Indian subcontinent and throughout the Islamic areas of Southeast Asia such as Indonesia and the southern Philippines. These individuals have been called by a variety of names: bachchec [batcha], literally "child" in Persian and some Turkish languages, luti (itinerant performer), raqqas (dancer) in many regions, kocek (little) and tavsan (rabbit) in Ottoman Turkey, khawal in …

Beloved, Anthony Shay Jan 2000

Beloved, Anthony Shay

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

The "beloved" forms a central literary concept, highly developed during the medieval Islamic period and still popular in our own times, in the urbanized societies of the Middle East and Central Asia. Encountered throughout the literatures of Persian, Ottoman, and Chaghatay (Uzbek) Turkish, Urdu, and Arabic, among others, this concept manifests itself through highly charged, homoeroticized images and metaphors. The beloved is characterized through such highly eroticized and theatrical tropes of wanton allurement as disheveled locks, torn garments, intoxication symbolized by a wine cup in hand, and appearing at the bedside of the feverish lover. (See, for example, the poems …

Hygiene And "The Indian Problem": Ethnicity And Medicine In Bolivia, 1910-1920, Ann Zulawski Jan 2000

Hygiene And "The Indian Problem": Ethnicity And Medicine In Bolivia, 1910-1920, Ann Zulawski

Latin American and Latino/a Studies: Faculty Publications

In the first decades of the twentieth century, Bolivian intellectuals and politicians debated how the country's Indian population should be incorporated into social and political life as the nation became increasingly integrated internally and forged stronger links to the world market. Public health was central to this discussion because of elite fears of contagion due to greater contact between Indians and non-Indians and the realization that if Indians were to be productive members of society, then their physical well-being had to be considered. This study examines the proposals of two Bolivian doctors, Jaime Mendoza and Nestor Morales, for improving the …

Radio's Influence On Music From 1919 To 1926, Aaron Hawley Jan 2000

Radio's Influence On Music From 1919 To 1926, Aaron Hawley

Honors Theses

Advances in technology have dramatically changed the lives of Americans throughout the twentieth century. Many of these advancements have become commonplace. For instance, the words "airplane," "computer," "radio," and "television" were not common a hundred years ago. Today, even small children know the definitions of these words. In addition, as new technologies develop, methods of accomplishing tasks change. These changes are then incorporated into our normal way of life. This gradual development causes many people to fail to consider the true implications of the technology on their way of life. Aspects of American's lives that used to be considered luxuries …

Seeing The Past: Jesse James And American History In Motion Pictures, Clinton S. Loftin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An Abstract of the Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts (in History) May, 2000 Historically-based films often reveal more about the time in which they were made than about their historical subjects. Three motion pictures about Jesse James made in three very different eras reveal more about contemporary history than they do about the facts surrounding the legendary outlaw’s life. While each film, in some way, purports to tell the “true” story of Jesse James’ life, each offers a different history of that life. In order to understand the reasons for …

Montaigne And The Coherence Of Memory, Douglas Mcfarland Jan 2000

Montaigne And The Coherence Of Memory, Douglas Mcfarland

Quidditas

Among the many classical authorities to whom Montaigne refers either through direct reference or quotation, little attention has been paid to Lucan and to his contribution to the intellectual and rhetorical strategies of the Essais. Hugo Friedrich, for instance, in his chapter on Montaigne’s intellectual inheritance from the classical world, does not even mention Lucan’s name. Although Virgil, Lucretius, Plutarch, and several others clearly have influenced both the style and content of the Essais in seemingly more direct and overt ways, Montaigne, nevertheless, turns to Lucan consistently and with regularity. The essayist directly alludes to Lucan on three occasions …

Dreams At Conception In The French Lancelot-Grail Romances (Thirteenth Century), Reginald Hyatte Jan 2000

Dreams At Conception In The French Lancelot-Grail Romances (Thirteenth Century), Reginald Hyatte

Quidditas

The Lancelot-Grail romances offer problematic instances of rewriting in their treatment of dreams: a songe or a vision recounted to an adult character about himself in the Vulgate Lancelot proper (ca. 1215–20) appears “prewritten” in a later composed romance as his mother’s or father’s dream in an enactment of the scene at or near his con- ception. In the cases under study, Queen Elaine’s dream the night Lance- lot was conceived in the Vulgate Story of Merlin (L’estoire de Merlin, after 1230) and Arthur’s dream soon after Mordret’s conception in the post-Vulgate Merlin Continuation (La suite du …

The Repudiation Of The Marvelous: Jonson’S The Alchemist And The Limits Of Satire, Ian Mcadam Jan 2000

The Repudiation Of The Marvelous: Jonson’S The Alchemist And The Limits Of Satire, Ian Mcadam

Quidditas

Our present conception of alchemy is, at best, shadowy and confused. As Charles Nicholl states in The Chemical Theatre, "The modern image...tends in two directions: one scientific, the other magical. The first defines alchemy simply and chronologically as early chemistry...out of which modern chemistry began to emerge during the seventeenth century.” On the other hand, “alchemy is popularly defined as one of the ‘occult arts’.... To us, the alchemist’s avowed quest for miraculous substances—the Philosopher’s Stone which converts all to gold, the Elixir Vitae which confers immortality—belongs to the realm of magic rather than science.” Nevertheless, to consider Renaissance …

“Falseness Reigns In Every Flock”: Literacy And Eschatological Discourse In The Peasants’ Revolt Of 1381, Tison Pugh Jan 2000

“Falseness Reigns In Every Flock”: Literacy And Eschatological Discourse In The Peasants’ Revolt Of 1381, Tison Pugh

Quidditas

The literature of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, a miscellany of fourteenth-century poetry and prose penned before, during, and after the insurrection, often stresses the importance of literacy to the nonaristocratic population of England. Since literacy was a primary marker of one’s social status in the stratified society of medieval England, the rise of literacy in the lower orders pointed to a dramatic change in the prevail- ing socioeconomic structure. In the literature of the revolt, eschatological themes highlight the tensions resulting from this tremendous upheaval in the traditional estates. The power of literacy is depicted as adumbrating a new …

Meter Change As A Relic Of Performance In The Middle English Romance Sir Beues, Linda Marie Zaerr Jan 2000

Meter Change As A Relic Of Performance In The Middle English Romance Sir Beues, Linda Marie Zaerr

Quidditas

Despite the paucity of direct evidence of performance, some form of public representation of the Middle English popular verse romances remains a possibility, and that possibility has been reached by extrapolation from a number of directions. The convergence of evidence, though indirect, has become convincing, and a new approach strengthens that likelihood even further. In an attempt to understand if and how the romances were performed, scholars have considered internal references to performance, historical documents of performance and audience, physical evidence from the manuscripts, cognitive theory, theory of orality and “mouvance,” and evidence from textual variants.
