Her mother was born in the colonies and her father, Samuel, was born in Poland. Samuel was a journalist for Jewish papers, a theater critic, a scholar, and the head of the Kultur Congress. They were not very interested in their daughter's education, but because they moved to Buenos Aires, she was able to go beyond the 3rd grade. She finished normal school and then studied physics at the Profesorado for secondary school teachers. Here, and at the university later, she experienced persecution because of her student activism and interest in Marxism. This collection of photographs was donated in 1976 by Leigh W. Osborn, sister of El Paso author Owen P. White. The images in this collection consist primarily of postcards about the Mexican Revolution (1910 to c.1920). The majority of the images are of Madero’s camps or military officials and soldiers.

Rogelio Carlos, Jr. was born and raised in Smeltertown. He recalls swimming in the river, hunting, and hiking with other neighborhood friends as a child and details the layout of Smeltertown. He states there was a strong sense of community in this small town among the older residents. The problem was with the younger children who created gangs, especially in the Calavera neighborhood. They lived in Vienna until she was 16, when the Nazis took over and they left for Hungary.
