This collection consists predominantly of copies of minute books for the Low Gap United Baptist Church from 1898-1944. Also included in this collection is a copy of “A Brief History of the Low Gap United Brethren Church” written by Brandon Kirk in 1993 and two photocopied photographs of the church and some church members. Because most of these materials are copies, legibility can be limited.

This collection contains one autograph book that has been divided in sections titled, “President and Cabinet”, “Senate”, and “House of Representatives” and contains dates between 1851 and 1855. Notably, the book contains the signatures of the following persons: Millard Fillmore, William A. King, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and others falling into the previously mentioned groups. Also included in the book is handwritten and illustrated sheet music for the following songs: Canción patriótica (the Argentina national anthem, notes on the page dedicate it to “Jaime B. Bowlin”) and a song “For Miss Virginia Bowlin” (James Bowlin’s wife’s middle name).

Papers relate primarily to his service in the first world war as a second lieutenant in the 58th Balloon Company, A.E.F., in France and include embarkation, payroll and other papers related to his duties as officer in charge of African American Brest Casual Company 1740 during its demobilization period; photographs and negatives.
