Indian Slavery In Spanish Guatemala, 1524-1550, William L. Sherman Dec 1966

Indian Slavery In Spanish Guatemala, 1524-1550, William L. Sherman

History ETDs

Some understanding of the state of native labor in the Indies is fundamental to an appreciation of post-Conquest society in the New World. The social and economic implications of Indian servitude are of such magnitude that they transcend other more dramatic aspects of Spanish domination in the sixteenth century. For Indian labor--certainly in the first decades--was the base upon which Spanish society reated; without it there waa a very real possibility of the abandonment of many American kingdoms. The degrees to which the conqueror depended upon the vanquished at once reflects the weak edifice of colonial society and defines the …

The Politics Of Free Banking In The Old Northwest, 1837-1863, William G. Shade Nov 1966

The Politics Of Free Banking In The Old Northwest, 1837-1863, William G. Shade

Wayne State University Dissertations

There is a great gap in the history of American monetary politics between the years of Jackson’s “Bank War” and the lengthy debate over bonds, Greenbacks, and silver that occupied the energies of the nation after the Civil War. While these years w ere chaotic and produced little constructive monetary legislation, the money issue played an important role. This study is designed to help clarify the nature of the issues during this period and the ways in which the parties reacted. The study of these issues has usually been confused by assumptions derived from a projection of the post-war issues …

Karl Löwith's View Of History: A Humanist Alternative To Historicism, Berthold P. Riesterer Oct 1966

Karl Löwith's View Of History: A Humanist Alternative To Historicism, Berthold P. Riesterer

Wayne State University Dissertations

The survival and increasing academic importance of the supra-historical position, particularly as an alternative to existential ontology and English analytical philosophy, indicate that a careful study of this particular trend is in order. The following analysis of the intellectual development of Karl Löwith, a thinker who in the course of his career moved from phenomenology and ontology to historicism and then finally to the supra-historical position, it is hoped, will make a contribution toward such a study.

A Comparative Analysis Of The Military Occupation Of Alta California 1768 - 1776, Terence Michael Allen Oct 1966

A Comparative Analysis Of The Military Occupation Of Alta California 1768 - 1776, Terence Michael Allen

History ETDs

One of the most remarkable stories of Spanish Colonial California concerns the occupation of Alta California after some two hundred years of disinterest. A great number of present-day writers have characterized Spain's 1769 advance into San Diego as one initiated by religious motive. The pseudonym "Sacred Expedition," in fact, underscores that belief. However, this pious theme ignores the world and local situations which then existed. Although no one can deny that Father Junipero Serra and his Franciscan co-workers were singularly adept at their chosen profession, careful investigation of source material concerning this subject has brought to light information which indicates …

Sir Frederick Lugard, World War I And The Amalgamation Of Nigeria 1914-1919, John F. Riddick Aug 1966

Sir Frederick Lugard, World War I And The Amalgamation Of Nigeria 1914-1919, John F. Riddick

Masters Theses

Introduction

Throughout the First World War, world attention focused mainly on Europe's Western Front. There, the human carnage, the destruction, and the ruin created grave pressures which spread throughout the world. Though remote and detached, the continent of Africa encountered these powerful forces. In Nigeria, the focal point of this study, the conflagration impeded the colony's administrative development while it spurred its economic growth. Nor did it escape the blood bath, for Nigerian forces fought in both East and West Africa. Before the outbreak of the war, the British government had made the decision to give Nigeria a centralized colonial …

The 1944 Senatorial Election: The Defeat Of Gerald P. Nye, Daniel F. Rylance Aug 1966

The 1944 Senatorial Election: The Defeat Of Gerald P. Nye, Daniel F. Rylance

Theses and Dissertations

The problem involved in this thesis is to investigate the causes for Senator Nye's defeat in the 1944 Senatorial election. The particular problem involved here is that isolationism has been commonly interpreted as the decisive reason for his defeat. This, however, is a singular interpretation of history largely stemming from the national scene while ignoring developments on the local level.

The procedure then was to investigate the opinion of Senator Nye from the state level. This included research in personalities and public episodes concurrent with Nye's year in the Senate. It also included a careful analysis of the North Dakota …

A History Of The Department Of Legal Medicine At Medical College Of Virginia, Mary A. Giunta Jul 1966

A History Of The Department Of Legal Medicine At Medical College Of Virginia, Mary A. Giunta

Master's Theses

Legal medicine can be defined as "the aoience of the application of medical knowledge to the purposes of the law." Therefore, its limits are on the one hand the requirements of the laws and on the other the whole range of medicine, that is to say, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, and all the sciences auxiliary thereto, that is, chemistry, physics, botany, et cetera; all lend their aid when necessity arises and in the same case to enable a court of law to arrive at a proper conclusion on a contested question affecting life or property."

The Ideal Historian, Ruler, And Philosopher As Envisioned In The Writings Of Otto, Bishop Of Freising, Lynn Lindeman Jul 1966

The Ideal Historian, Ruler, And Philosopher As Envisioned In The Writings Of Otto, Bishop Of Freising, Lynn Lindeman

Masters Theses

Introduction

Otto of Freising is best known as the philosopher of history who wrote The Two Cities and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa. Unfortunately, the interest Otto evokes is often limited to his philosophy of history. Many never go beyond the German historian Wilman's view of Otto as "the first to have a conception of the world-sequence of history."1

Otto of Freising's two historical works, The Two Cities and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa, are important for more than his philosophy of history. The values and ideals Otto reflects in his writings are valuable in giving one insights …

The Agrarian Revolution In Kenya, Margie Senkowski Jul 1966

The Agrarian Revolution In Kenya, Margie Senkowski

Masters Theses

Introduction

The objective of this research has been to present a picture of the revolutionary agricultural changes that have been taking place for the last few years in the East African country of Kenya. Kenya is an agricultural country; its economy is dependent almost entirely on agricultural production. In the words of Jomo Kenyatta, Prime Minister of Kenya, "To achieve the growth essential for increased welfare, the country will continue to rely on agriculture, which employs most of our people and provides almost all of our exports."

The progress is agriculture is helping to transform Kenya from a primitive tribal …

Federal Naval Operations In The Gulf Of Mexico, 1860-1862, Mitchell S. Goldberg Jun 1966

Federal Naval Operations In The Gulf Of Mexico, 1860-1862, Mitchell S. Goldberg

History ETDs

When Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office as President of the United States on March 4, 1861, the military establishment was unprepared for the coming struggle. The Navy Department was probably the most feeble of the armed services. It did not have the men, vessels or armament and lacked the legal authority to increase or strengthen them.

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan May 1966

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan

History ETDs

This thesis deals with the military career and New Mexico governorship of Facundo Malgares. His career, from approximately 1800 to 1822, after Mexico had become independent of Spain, illustrated the operation of Spanish institutions during the last days of Spanish rule in the northern interior province of Mexico. Of special importance were problems associated with Spanish-Italian and Anglo-Spanish relations when the Indian was still powerful and the United States was beginning its westward expansion. Spanish land policy in New Mexico and its continued effect on individual holdings after United States possession was and continues to be important in New Mexico. …

Sebastian Vizcaino And Spanish Expansion In He Pacific Ocean: 1580-1630, W. Michael Mathes May 1966

Sebastian Vizcaino And Spanish Expansion In He Pacific Ocean: 1580-1630, W. Michael Mathes

History ETDs

Much has been written relative to the history of the early discoveries of California. In almost all works treating of early California, the name of Sebastian Vizcaino appears, but apart from mention of his voyage to California in 1602, little more is said relative to this explorer. Furthermore, in many instances, what little is said is in a critical vein. Nevertheless, no single individual has more contact with California during the first two and one-half centuries following its discovery than Vizcaino, and, while monuments and parks have been named for his predecessor, Rodriguez Cabrillo, few monuments have been named for …

The Utah Fleet: A History Of Ships In The United States Navy That Bore Utah Place Names And Personality Names, Robert Anthony Sumbot

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Down through the annals of history, man has perpetually engaged in conflicts; out of necessity he has progressed a long way from the bow and arrow stage of warfare. By the very nature of man's identity he has been a living example of progress and development. He never stands still during war or peace. Out of each encounter it appears he has learned and added a little more to the mechanics and theory of warfare, thereby making each war a succession of progress. This is a study of man's efforts to use and control the vast watery barriers which face …

American Opinion On Diplomatic Relations With The Vatican, 1945-1965, Dennis Lynn Pettibone May 1966

American Opinion On Diplomatic Relations With The Vatican, 1945-1965, Dennis Lynn Pettibone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The debate over American diplomatic relations with the Vatican is almost as old as the Republic. It became a matter of serious concern-especially for many Protestant leaders--when Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Myron C. Taylor to be his "personal representative" to His Holiness. This concern was increased by the continuation of Taylor's mission after Roosevelt's death and the end of World War II. The White House received protesting letters from a wide variety of sources. One of the most outspoken critics of this mission was Christian Century. Resolutions urging Taylor's recall were passed by several Protestant groups. When a delegation …

The Mormons And The Civil War, Boyd L. Eddins May 1966

The Mormons And The Civil War, Boyd L. Eddins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I had intended originally to write on another subject and had begun the research. However, in the process of perusing sources available, a related subject captured my interest. The Mormon prophecy relating to the Civil War had been a source of my belief in the efficacy of latter-day revelation. I was under the impression that my Church was extremely interested in current events as indication of the fulfillment of prophecy. I theorized that if such a direct, detailed prophecy as the one received in 1832 by Joseph Smith, began to unfold in our day, considerable excitement would be aroused. Perhaps …

Walsingham And Burghley: Factionalism In The Privy Council Under Elizabeth I, John W. Nott Apr 1966

Walsingham And Burghley: Factionalism In The Privy Council Under Elizabeth I, John W. Nott

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Elizabethan Age was the age of Shakespeare and Marlowe, when the English literacy renaissance attained a claims; the age of Drake, Hawkins, and Frobisher, when English sea power asserted its genius. It was also the age of great statesmen and political improvisation, for England was beginning to emerge as a world power. Headed by a queen whose primary claim to fame rested with her ability to inspire her people and manage her talented ministers, the island kingdom soon attained the status of a major nation. At Elizabeth's accession the government was in a state of decline but skillful …

Japanese - American Relations, 1941: A Preface To Pearl Harbor, Edward Gorn Apr 1966

Japanese - American Relations, 1941: A Preface To Pearl Harbor, Edward Gorn

Masters Theses

Preface

There are as many interpretations as there are writers on the positions of American foreign policy during the diplomatic negotiations with Japan in 1941. Historians supporting President Roosevelt's position tend to blame Japan's imperialism and expansionism as one of the main causes of the war. Revisionist historians like Charles Beard, Harry Elmer Barnes, and Charles Tansill, place the responsibility for Japan's declaration of war and surprise attack on the intransigent approach of the Roosevelt administration. To place the full burden of responsibility for the failure of negotiations on either Japan or the United States is to over-simplify the complex …

The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows Apr 1966

The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows

Honors Theses

Temperance is an organized reform began at the end of the American Revolutionary War, its leaders inspired by the ravages dealt by alcoholics to the soldiers and sailors. At first self-control was desired; later self-denial was its dominant theme. Limited as it was, the temperance crusade, led by the aristocracy and the clergy, was naturally gradual in acquiring acceptance and strength. The course of its development from the 1780's until the mid-1830's was one of moderate demands, as compared with the later extremism, and one led by the fiery clerics and their assemblies, compared to the later common lay leadership.

Gerald L.K. Smith And Anti-Semitism, Isabel B. Price Mar 1966

Gerald L.K. Smith And Anti-Semitism, Isabel B. Price

History ETDs

According to Paul Massing, author of Rehearsal For Destruction, a historical analysis of the forerunners of anti-Semitism in Germany, a predisposition to anti-Semitism was manifested in social protests in 19th century Germany. Liberal historians and socialist writers were convinced that, used as a political tool, anti-Semitic agitation could arouse the political interests of dormant social groups to join the forces of progress. Anti-Semitism movements which formulated the racist ideology and kept alive and disseminated anti-Semitism throughout German culture, were in existence long before Hitler rose to power. With the forces of the twenties and thirties, however, inflation, depression, unemployment, social …

The Virginia Executive Budget, Charles William Wyatt Iii Jan 1966

The Virginia Executive Budget, Charles William Wyatt Iii

Master's Theses

Virginia, like the other states in our union, was without any set form of budget during its first century of existence. This was partly because there was no definite need for any governmental reform in this area until the twentieth century brought about an expansion of the powers and responsibilities of governments. The states relied on the general property tax for the bulk of their revenue and its return was relatively certain and constant. It enabled a legislature to accurately judge its yield and match this yield to what was needed by an easy adaptation of the rate of taxation. …

Thomas Staples Martin : His Senatorial Career, Ernest Scott Strother Jan 1966

Thomas Staples Martin : His Senatorial Career, Ernest Scott Strother

Master's Theses

The Democratic party and the combined Republican and Readjuster parties were approximately equal in strength in Virginia in the 1880's, the elections being won by majorities or a few thousand votes. By 1890, however, the Democratic party was in command of most branches of' the government and appeared determined to perpetuate itself in power, In the years following 1890 there arose a relatively latent political figure who, through the powerful Democratic organization and with the able assistance of his lieutenants, influenced the political affairs of Virginia to such an extent that opposition offered only token resistance. From the time he …
