The advance of Anglo-American culture into New Mexico brought with it religious institutions in the same manner and through the same agencies by which they had been introduced in to all areas which had come under control of the United States Government. In few instances, however, had Protestantism found a more difficult field than in New Mexico. For three hundred years the religious needs of people had been cared for by the Roman Catholic Church.

Development Of A Proposed Course Of Study In American History For The Senior High School, Floyd Gagnon

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

I. Importance and Statement of the Problem

During the past fifty years secondary schools have made rapid advances both in enrollments and in the curriculum. In 1890 these schools were still the schools of the few, even though their enrollments had begun to grow rapidly. The high schools have continued their rapid growth until today today they present an extremely wide range of individual differences in such areas as interests, abilities and needs. Of the millions of students attending these schools today, probably six out of every seven will never attend college. It is thus apparent that …

The Legal Bases Of The Nuremberg Trial Of German Leaders, Richard Harrison Doughty Aug 1947

The Legal Bases Of The Nuremberg Trial Of German Leaders, Richard Harrison Doughty

Masters Theses

Preface: The purpose of this study is to examine the legal justification for the trial held at Nuremberg, Germany, of leading German Nazis. The wisdom of the trial, its possible future effects, its fairness or unfairness are not primarily the concern of this thesis. An exhaustive study of these questions would require a much more ambitious effort than this one proposes to be. Here the question is--did there exist before the creation of the Charter of the Tribunal, recognized international law on which each of the counts of the Indictment against the Nazis could properly be based?

Early in my …

Trotsky And The Moscow Treason Trials., Albert L. Boiter Jan 1947

Trotsky And The Moscow Treason Trials., Albert L. Boiter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Someone has said that Hitler failed to conquer Russia because there was no strong internal ally, i.e. 'Fifth Column', to prepare for his armies. Such an opinion heaps enormous credit upon Joseph Stalin because he launched investigations and trials of alleged traitors as early as 1935. Some critics prefer to call the trials and resultant executions 'blood purges' since they also served the purpose of eliminating virtually all of Stalin's political opponents. Long before the rest of the world learned by tragic experience about the infiltration methods of the Nazis, Stalin's government claimed that it had uncovered a fascist-supported conspiracy …

The History And Enforcement Of The Federal Food, Drug, And Cosmetic Act Since 1938, William Ebert Morrissey Jan 1947

The History And Enforcement Of The Federal Food, Drug, And Cosmetic Act Since 1938, William Ebert Morrissey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the undertaking a recent history of such a fundamental law as one that deals with food, drugs and cosmetics in its relationship to the human race, we should realize that such a field has a history possibly as old as man himself. There have always been individuals in the good and welfare of others, and there have always been individuals interested in taking advantage of their fellow man for personal gain, frequently in an exceedingly unscrupulous manner.

The Solicitor General of the United States, in a recent paper read at the commemoration the the fortieth anniversary of the original …

The Technical Development Of The Oboe As Shown Through The Literature Of The Instrument From The Eighteenth Century To The Present, Janet A. Degroote Jan 1947

The Technical Development Of The Oboe As Shown Through The Literature Of The Instrument From The Eighteenth Century To The Present, Janet A. Degroote

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In a brief survey of this history of the oboe, it is necessary to return to primitive instruments. It is impossible to give a definite date at which the oboe may have originated, but Schwartz, in this Story of Musical Instruments, accepts the periond of the Fourth Dynasty in Egypt, or about 3700 B.C., as the date of the oldest specimens of the early forms.1 We also know of their existence in the Mesopotamian culture of 2800 B.C. A shrill, double-reed instructment with some finger-holes is known to have exited in Greece about 1500 B.C., when that civilization was …

The History Of Tuolumne County During The Gold Rush, Harry C. Tremain Jan 1947

The History Of Tuolumne County During The Gold Rush, Harry C. Tremain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Back in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, in the heart of the Mother Lode, lies Tuolumne County, whose history is rich with memories of the days of forty-nine. It was in this country of yesterdays, during those frenzied days of gold, that men fought and toiled and died for that precious metal. Miners in search of this precious substance penetrated into its forests, prospected up and down its canyons, and climbed its steep and rugged mountains. Towns sprang up overnight and disappeared almost as quickly. The miners were forever moving on to richer diggings in search of the “El …

Special Phases Of The Early History Of Calaveras County, California, Ethelyn E. Wood Jan 1947

Special Phases Of The Early History Of Calaveras County, California, Ethelyn E. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A person living in Calaveras County is constantly reminded of the glorious past when the mines and camps were in full swing. The old buildings with their iron shutters, the great piles of worked-over gravel, and the stories of the old-timers all stimulate a person's curiosity about the romantic past. Therefore, it has been my ambition since first coming into the county to make a serious study of the early days and put down my findings in an organized paper. There are no printed works at all complete on the county as a whole. Mason's History of Amador County and …

History Of Drama In Ogden, Beth Browning Jan 1947

History Of Drama In Ogden, Beth Browning

Theses and Dissertations

Many cultural histories have been written of Utah, but not one of Weber County. The purpose of this thesis is to develop the history of drama in Weber County. Particular interest is given to the stage and its evolution. Also, I include the outstanding leaders of this art, because they are the builders of this history. The hypothesis is that the present-day drama owes much to our pioneers of Weber County. This thesis is written in commemoration of these pioneers for our Centennial Year, 1947.
