The American Efforts To Modernize The Egyptian Army Under Khedive Ismail, Robin Joy Love Buxton

Dissertations and Theses

From 1869 to 1878 approximately fifty American military officers were invited to Egypt by Khedive Ismail for the purpose of modernizing the Egyptian army. During that time the American officers led by General Charles P. Stone designed a staff system for the Egyptian army and they established a series of technical schools not only for the staff officers but for the rank and file as well. In addition to the reorganization, the American officers led exploratory expeditions into central Africa, they refortified the Egyptian coastline and they built roads and lighthouses. In conjunction with their expeditions, the officers produced numerous …

The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda Sep 1978

The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis will examine the significance of the defense system that was a result of the Libyan wars against the Romans, Byzantines, and the Vandals. For economic and strategic reasons these nations were involved in long and bitter wars which lasted over six centuries. The policy of the long distance military expeditions, which was the main instrument of the Romans in subduing the natives in the early Empire, had failed to achieve its goals. Thus, the alternative was to erect a network of roads and forts in strategic spots such as water points, commanding hills, along the caravan routes and …

The Civil War In East Tennessee: A Social, Political, And Economic Study, Charles Faulkner Bryan Jr. Aug 1978

The Civil War In East Tennessee: A Social, Political, And Economic Study, Charles Faulkner Bryan Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

By the mid-nineteenth century, East Tennessee had evolved into an unique Southern region. Divergent patterns of growth, society, politics, and economics marked the eastern counties as distinct from Tennessee's other sections, a situation greatly influenced by the region's geographic isolation. By the eve of the Civil War, the region's people perceived themselves as different from their fellow Tennesseans; and in many ways a deep-seated distrust of the rest of the state was commonplace. Therefore when Governor Isham Harris, backed by overwhelming popular support in Middle and West Tennessee, made moves to withdraw the state from the Union in the spring …

Richmond And The Sturdy Beggar : A Local Study Of Unemployment Relief 1929-1935, Dorothy Herin Brinkley Aug 1978

Richmond And The Sturdy Beggar : A Local Study Of Unemployment Relief 1929-1935, Dorothy Herin Brinkley

Master's Theses

While studying the Great Depression's impact on the United States in a graduate se.minar, the period of 1933 and Roosevelt 's New Deal programs for the unemployed appeared to mark a major dividing point in attitude toward public treatment of the unemployed. Searching for a way to investigate this idea, I began a study of Richmond, Virginia, to determine whether Richmond's experience with unemployment during the depression had resulted in any lasting changes in its view of unemployment relief. The method chosen was a chronological study of unemployment relief in Richmond from 1929 to 1935 to accomplish the following purposes: …

The Diplomatic Mission Of Alexander Wilbourne Weddell At The Inter-American Conference For The Maintenance Of Peace December 1-23, 1936, Peter Nicholas Pross

Master's Theses

This thesis evaluates the diplomatic activities of Ambassador Weddell at the Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace. Weddell's accomplishments are analyzed against the background of the Conference and the objectives of the State Department. The approach is both chronological and topical, and new or different interpretations of the Conference are not offered. However, the author utilizes heretofore overlooked primary materials and presents a different point of view on the Inter~American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace-- the perspective of Ambassador Weddell.

The Farmer's Revolt: The Election Of 1896 In Virginia, James D. Wright

Honors Theses

The United States during the nineteenth century passed from its infancy toward its ultimate role as a world power. Delayed by the bitter Civil War, the nation regained its footing moving rapidly toward a goal blurred by the distant future. With the development of a strong industrial backbone, the country was destined to compete with the major powers, France, Great Britain, Germany and Russia. By 1890 the United States lead the world in the production of iron and steel and soon surpassed all nations in the mining of coal. With an increased demand for industrial products the need for better …

Clair Engle And The Politics Of California Reclamation, 1943-1960, Stephen Paul Sayles

History ETDs

Clair Engle, the flamboyant Congressman from California's mountain-valley Second Congressional District, played a key role in the great water and power controversies of the 1950's. As Chairman of the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee (1955-1959), he placed his brand on all natural resource development legislation of the period. His interest in water development stemmed from representing a congressional district which contained the source of most of California's water supply. From the 1940's to the 1960's Engle authored every major addition to the great Central Valley Project of California, including such projects as the American River Development, Trinity River project, …

From The Natural To The Civil State : The Evolutionary Process As Viewed By Thomas Hobbes, John Locke And Jean Jacques Rousseau, Sue Slate Donaldson May 1978

From The Natural To The Civil State : The Evolutionary Process As Viewed By Thomas Hobbes, John Locke And Jean Jacques Rousseau, Sue Slate Donaldson

Master's Theses

The social contract theory was used extensively in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries by political philosophers to popularize the belief that governments were obligated to the people . This theory maintained that the people had originally formed governments, had set their limits and were allowing them to continue to operate. Governments owed their existence not to God and not to kings, but to the people. The social contract theorists tried to explain how political obligations were formed by men in a pre-political state. In order to do this, they first had to describe this pre-political state and demonstrate …

The Tredegar Iron Works : 1865-1876, Dennis Maher Hallerman May 1978

The Tredegar Iron Works : 1865-1876, Dennis Maher Hallerman

Master's Theses

The Tredegar Iron Works rose to prominence dur- ing the Civil War as the chief armorer of the Confederacy. That four-year period represents the focal point of the company's existence, however, the Civil War experience of the Tredegar should not be regarded as a singular industrial monument to the Confederacy but as a maturation process for the company itself. The focus of this thesis is the rebirth and subsequent growth and contraction of the Tredegar in the ten years following the Civil War.

A Thing Doubly Inscrutable : A Woman And A Queen : Elizabethan Foreign Policy: 1558-1584, Virginia Lesley Mathewson

Master's Theses

On November 17, 1558 it appeared that the argosy of England had in fact been shipwrecked and the "rocks and shoals" surrounding her greatly reduced the possibility that she would ever spread her sails again. At war with France, she was both militarily weak and financially exhausted. Ravaged by recent years of religious persecution she faced the prospect of a rejuvenated Catholic church on the continent and Calvinist impatience at home. She was threatened by France in Scotland and by the impending loss of her only ally in Europe, as France and Spain negotiated a marriage agreement. Finally, to captain …

A History Of John W. Young's Utah Railroads, 1884-1894, Marlowe C. Adkins Jr. May 1978

A History Of John W. Young's Utah Railroads, 1884-1894, Marlowe C. Adkins Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This is the story of three narrow gauge, short line railroads. Had fate been kinder, they might have become the hub of a major mountain west rail network. But this thesis will deal with facts, not possibilities, as it investigates the justification, construction, financing, and politics that surrounded these railroads and their location.

The locale was in and near Salt Lake City, Territory of Utah, during the decade between 1883-1894. Both location and time period have significance, for anti-Mormon feelings, within and without the the Territory, were very strong.

The visible cause of the anti-Mormon movement was polygamy.1 For, …

"Up The Ditch:" The History Of Elsinore, Utah, 1874-1977, Ken Cregg Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to examine the settlement and institutions of Elsinore, Utah. The community was founded by Scandinavian converts to the Mormon church in the late Nineteenth Century. Their experience in adapting to the arid region of south central Utah is a chapter in the general movement by the Mormons to settle the Mountain West.

The historical method was utilized to uncover extant documents on the subject. Interviews were held with the oldest citizens of the community and those who had a vast knowledge of the town. A period of three months was spent living in Elsinore …

Indian Revolts In Northern New Spain, 1680-1786, A Comparative Analysis, Roberto Mario Salmón Apr 1978

Indian Revolts In Northern New Spain, 1680-1786, A Comparative Analysis, Roberto Mario Salmón

History ETDs

Much of Spain's colonial history in the Americas can be told in terms of the relations between Spaniards and Indians. The New World Indians figured as significantly in determining the nature and direction of Spanish exploration and settlement as did political and geographical factors. Spaniards were ever desirous to learn more about these Indian peoples, especially if they had cultures and economies worth exploiting. But the Indians seldom submitted peacefully to strange men who spoke of God and king and insisted on a new way of life. Indian chieftains only reluctantly gave up positions of tribal control and remained prepared …

Coke, Wentworth, And The Drafting Of The Petition Of Right, Frances S. Taylor Apr 1978

Coke, Wentworth, And The Drafting Of The Petition Of Right, Frances S. Taylor

Honors Theses

In 1628, members of the English Parliament confronted the problem of arbitrary rule by the king, Charles I. Wishing to prevent future royal violations of their fundamental liberties, both houses sought a remedy. Their efforts culminated in the Petition of Right, a statement of the rights of Englishmen under the common law. While many men could be named as contributors to the Petition's success, Sir Edward Coke and Sir Thomas Wentworth, members of the House ofCommons, stand out as two of its major architects. Without their contributions, the Petition would have succumbed to outside pressures early in the session. Biographers …

The Hammer And The Cross : The Conversion Of Scandinavia, James E. Cumbie Apr 1978

The Hammer And The Cross : The Conversion Of Scandinavia, James E. Cumbie

Honors Theses

The advent of a new religious faith is always a valuable historical tool. Shits in religion uncover interesting aspects of the societies involved. This is particularly true when an indigenous, national faith is supplanted by an alien one externally introduced. Such is the case in medieval Scandinavia, when Norse paganism was ousted by Latin Christianity.

Women In An Evangelical Community: Oberlin 1835-50, Lori D. Ginzberg Jan 1978

Women In An Evangelical Community: Oberlin 1835-50, Lori D. Ginzberg

Honors Papers

Oberlin College is frequently mentioned in connection with women's education, women's rights, or the struggle for women's emancipation. The following passage from the 1834 First Circular is invariably cited: Oberlin's founders strove for"… the elevation of female character, by bringing within the reach of the misjudged and neglected sex, all the instructive privileges which hitherto have unreasonably distinguished the leading sex from theirs." Discussions seek to prove either that Oberlin is to be praised for its correct and "liberated" goals, or that it is to be condemned for hypocrisy in not going as far as publicized in the First Circular. …

The "City On A Hill" : Tom Johnson And Cleveland 1901-1909, Keith Dean Dickson Jan 1978

The "City On A Hill" : Tom Johnson And Cleveland 1901-1909, Keith Dean Dickson

Master's Theses

Tom Loftin Johnson, mayor of Cleveland, Ohio from 1901 to 1909, was once hailed by a contemporary as "The outstanding municipal executive so far produced in United States history." Indeed, this judgment probably holds true even to the present day. Johnson's drive, combined with his uncompromising dedication to justice, dominated Cleveland politics and invigorated a city which had lost all sense of civic pride and responsibility. Johnson also brought a new vitality to American reform in the cities. His battles for three cent fares on the municipal street railway system, municipal ownership of public utilities, home rule, equal taxation and …

Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to explore the resettlement of Indochinese refugees to their new life in Portland, Oregon. Three basic areas were under consideration. The first area dealt with demographic data: who are the refugees and what are their pasts? The second area focused on aspects of successful resettlement: what do refugees seek in order to consider themselves successfully resettled, and how do their ideas of successful resettlement collate with their present state of resettlement? The third area dealt with the effectiveness of resettlement programs: how have various assistance programs been helpful to the refugees, and are the refugees aware of …
