Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman Dec 1965

Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman

Masters Theses

I. Religious Factors as a Cause of Revolution

Standard history books contain little or nothing of the documentary material which would relate religion to the factors contributing to the American Revolution. References to social, political, and economic causations abound, but only occasional statements concerning the influence of religion are found, and among these the role of the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Quaker persuasions receives most attention. Yet the involvement of the evangelical churches was significant enough to merit separate, intensive studies. It is the object of this essay to investigate the involvement of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist groups in …

Jeremy Bentham And The Development Of English Utilitarianism, James William Gepson Oct 1965

Jeremy Bentham And The Development Of English Utilitarianism, James William Gepson

Student Work

The eighteenth century in one sense may be viewed as the second Hundred Years War. The century saw France and England continue their struggle for colonial empire and commercial advantage. William Pitt the Elder (1706-1778) led England to victory in the mid-century conflict primarily through his use of English see Power.1 The cost of the conflict laid great burdens on the English taxpayer and English statesmen demanded that the colonies begin to bear a share of the cost of imperial defense. Such a policy firmly applied by Lord Townsend, led to the American Revolution which began a partial reversal …

The Treaty Of Fond Du Lac: August 5, 1826, Gerald H. Hubert Sep 1965

The Treaty Of Fond Du Lac: August 5, 1826, Gerald H. Hubert

Master's Essays (1922 - )

In a treaty with the Sioux, the Chippewas and several other Indian tribes: at Prairie du Chien in August, 1825", the United States attempted to establish boundaries between the various tribes which were represented, thus cutting down on the age-old wars between them. Article 12 of that treaty provided that a council should be held with the Chippewas upon Lake Superior some time during the year 1826. This stipulation was inserted at the request of' the Chippewa chiefs in order that they have an opportunity to explain to the warriors the obligations and advantages of that treaty.1 The Chippewa tribe …

Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey Of East Tennessee: A Career Of Public Service, David Lawson Eubanks Aug 1965

Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey Of East Tennessee: A Career Of Public Service, David Lawson Eubanks

Doctoral Dissertations

Conclusion: The focus of this biography has been on the active aspects of Ramsey's career. Thus his characteristics as a person have been implicitly rather than explicitly displayed. Since, however, numerous examples of his intimate correspondence with family and friends have been inserted, the reader has been able to sense many of Ramsey's traits. This biographer feels obligated to mention at least one of Ramsey's characteristics: his boastful vanity. No one can deny that he had a strong desire to receive credit and praise for services rendered. He "was" the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. He "galvanized" the dead …

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey Aug 1965

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey

Graduate Student Research Papers

The originality of Frederick Jackson Turner can be recognized against a background consisting of evidence of his contributions to the two fields, history and teaching. The stage will be set by a short biographical treatment of Turner. This avenue of approach will lead to an elaboration of Turner's major historical interpretation. This concept will be described and two subordinate facets of his thesis will be examined briefly. The teaching aspects of Turner's career will be illuminated by analyzing the inseparable historian-teacher relationship and, in addition, the quality and lasting effects of his influence will be treated. It is not the …

Historic Richmond Foundation, Ernest H. Mason Aug 1965

Historic Richmond Foundation, Ernest H. Mason

Master's Theses

Facing northwest in the twenty-four hundred block of East Broad and Grace Streets in Richmond, Virginia is St. John's Church which occupies, with its cemetery and dependent appurtenances, an entire city block or one sixteenth of a square mile. Over the eastern skyline of the city, the building loses its identity; even its spire is hidden by an intricate maze of buildings of less traditional import. The white frame steeple is a nationwide symbol of the active thought and spoken word which led to the American Revolution, for from its chancel to the occupants of its high paneled pews, Patrick …

Congressional Career Of Cordell Hull, Joseph Leland Johnson Aug 1965

Congressional Career Of Cordell Hull, Joseph Leland Johnson

Masters Theses

Preface: During the summer of 1963, under the direction of Dr. Stanley J. Folmsbee, Professor of History at The University of Tennessee, I prepared a short paper on an early period of Cordell Hull's congressional career. This study was fascinating. It appeared to me that many students who know a great deal about Hull's secretaryship under President Roosevelt are unaware of his preparation for this high position. Thus, during the latter part of the summer after a trip to Hull's hometown, Carthage, Tennessee, it was concluded that a thesis on the congressional career of Cordell Hull would prove a valuable …

A. O. P. Nicholson Of Tennessee: Editor, Statesman, And Jurist, Patricia P. Clark Aug 1965

A. O. P. Nicholson Of Tennessee: Editor, Statesman, And Jurist, Patricia P. Clark

Masters Theses

Preface: Tennessee has had its share of notable sons, most of whom have found their Boswell and had their deeds and contributions duly recorded. A striking exception is A. O. P. Nicholson. State legislator, U. S. senator, and state chief justice, as well as the holder of numerous minor posts, Nicholson has never rated even a scholarly monograph. Although he may be an apt subject for a biography, the primary emphasis in this study is on the political aspects of his career, with some attention to his role as editor and jurist. Since time and space do not permit, his …

The Military Occupation Of Richmond, 1865-1870, Richard M. Duggan Jul 1965

The Military Occupation Of Richmond, 1865-1870, Richard M. Duggan

Master's Theses

It has been my hope to present this paper as a part of the historical portrayal of the U. S. Amy's experience with ''military government and civil affairs." With this view in mind, I have devoted the first chapter to a brief history of the army's occupation experiences, especially through the Civil War. Additionally, I have attempted to define and clarify several terms used to differentiate the use of military authority.

More specifically, the purpose of this thesis is to determine the extent of military control affecting the govermant of Richmond during the 1865-1870 period following the Civil War. l …

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker Jul 1965

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker

Masters Theses

Introduction

For years Great Britain had followed the time-honored doctrine in foreign affairs of maintaining the balance of power which meant

to resist by diplomacy or arms the growth of any European State at once so formidable and so potentially hostile as to threaten our national liberties, the security of our shores, the safety of our commerce or the integrity of our foreign possessions.

With the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and the establishment of the Metternichian concept of the concert of Europe, Britain's historic determination to preserve the balance of power gave way to a new attitude in foreign …

The Migration Of Negro Coal Miners From Alabama To Southeast Kansas In 1899, John M. Robb Jul 1965

The Migration Of Negro Coal Miners From Alabama To Southeast Kansas In 1899, John M. Robb

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Negro emerging from slavery after the Civil War was faced with the problem of making a living as a freeman. The only salable asset he had was his labor. In certain areas of the South, the Negro had turned by 1870, to mining bituminous coal. In the last decade of the nineteenth century, conditions in the coal mines of greater Birmingham, Alabama, reached such a state that a number of Negroes felt it imperative to remove themselves.

In 1899, a number of these Negroes migrated to Crawford and Cherokee counties of Southeastern Kansas to mine coal. Their arrival was …

American Involvement And Policy During The Suez Crisis - 1956, Thomas M. Riley Jul 1965

American Involvement And Policy During The Suez Crisis - 1956, Thomas M. Riley

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

"The Suez Canal has been a blessing and a curse. Perhaps since the digging of the Canal began in 1859 and after its completion in 1869, it has been subjected to more controversies than any other construction project in history".1

The Suez Canal, in Egyptian territory between the Arabian Desert and the Siani peninsula, is an artificial waterway 103 miles long, between Port Said on the Mediterranean and Suez on the Red Sea. "Crossing the isthmus between Asia and Africa, the Canal's geographic location has made its strategic value in international affairs greater than that of any other maritime …

The Hitler-Youth In The Third Reich, David Crawford Poteet Jun 1965

The Hitler-Youth In The Third Reich, David Crawford Poteet

Master's Theses

This work attempts to answer, at least in part, two specific questions: why did the Hitler-Youth arise, and what was it? Any judgement which this paper offers as to why the Hitler-Youth arose by all rights should be questioned. Probably it is too soon to attempt such an analysis. But if attempts were never made, the criticism, which almost invariably results in further thinking and perhaps firmer conclusions would have no point at which to begin.

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman Jun 1965

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman

Masters Theses

Preface

This paper shall describe and analyze United States' policy towards Korea from 1834, when American attention was first attracted to that country because of possible trade opportunities, to 1954, which saw the completion of the Geneva Conference on Korea. Throughout this period American policy was neither static, nor was it ever well defined. During this span of one hundred and twenty years American policy in Korea falls logically into two main periods:

i) the initial period from 1834 to 1943 during which time America's primary concern was the establishment and maintenance of the "Open Door" policy;

and ii) the …

Nineteenth Century Constitutional Amendment In Maine, Peter Neil Berry Jun 1965

Nineteenth Century Constitutional Amendment In Maine, Peter Neil Berry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The state of Maine has had but one constitution in its one hundred and forty-four year existence. The document itself, however, has been amended nearly one hundred times. Thirty of these amendments came before the close of the nineteenth century; most of the subsequent amendments were either suggested initially before the turn of the present century or owe their existence to an amendment approved prior to 1900. What is proposed in this study is an examination of the amendments with particular emphasis upon the conflicting reasons of proponents and opponents of specific measures. This study will attempt to evaluate the …

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman Jun 1965

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Panama Canal is one of the major commercial waterways of the world and, furthermore, it is vital to the defence of the United States. ·Before this canal could be constructed, it was necessary to persuade the British government to give up its right to share with the United States the building of an isthmian canal. The Clayton-Bulwer treaty of 1850 had provided that neither the United States nor Great Britain would carry out the project singly. Later through the Hay-Pauncefote treaty Great Britain agreed to abrogate the Clayton-Bulwer treaty and allowed the United States alone to build and …

A Study Of Maine Central Railroad Passenger Service Since 1900, Henry G. Stenberg Jun 1965

A Study Of Maine Central Railroad Passenger Service Since 1900, Henry G. Stenberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A general study was made of the Maine Central railroad’s passenger service from 1900 to its elimination in I960. Because of the difficulties encountered in obtaining information regarding the Maine Central, the author has relied upon records of the Maine Public Utilities Commission and other sources.

The Maine Central Railroad once operated an extensive network of passenger trains. Additional services also included airlines, buslines, ferries, and hotels. As the popularity of the automobile increased, the railroad was forced to curtail its passenger service and end all operations of ferries, buses, and hotels. The number of passengers steadily declined, and passenger …

Pedro FermíN De Mendinueta;Colonial Governor Of New Mexico, 1767-1778., Elizabeth Nelson Patrick May 1965

Pedro FermíN De Mendinueta;Colonial Governor Of New Mexico, 1767-1778., Elizabeth Nelson Patrick

History ETDs

Pedro Fermín de Mendinueta was born in Elizondo, Valle de Baztan, Navarra in 1725, probably on July 7. His baptismal record states he received that sacrament on July 8 and in as much as children were baptized as soon after birth as possible and often named after the saint on whose day they were born, it is probable that he, indeed, was born on the da of San Fermín, July 7. San Fermín, incidentally is the patron saint of Navarra, and a child born on that day would very likely bear that name. He was the legitimate son of don …

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter May 1965

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter

History ETDs

Excerpt from introduction:

This is a study of the social structure of Castile in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The charter witness lists of that period as edited by Júlio González were the basis for this study. Charters formed an important part of the documentation of the Middle Ages. Royal charters, in general, officially conveyed the use of a specific property to a person who agreed to accept designated responsibilities. As the possession and or use of land was a key to medieval economy, it was essential that ownership or legitimate occupation was clear to the authorities. The …

Spanish Government In New Mexico At The End Of The Colonial Period, Marc Simmons May 1965

Spanish Government In New Mexico At The End Of The Colonial Period, Marc Simmons

History ETDs

Three years ago when this study was initiated, the intent was to describe the nature of political government in New Mexico during the Mexican period, 1821-1846. This task had been undertaken by Lansing B. Bloom almost fifty years previously and the results published in the journal Old Santa Fe. Much new material had since come to light, however, and it was felt that an entirely new appraisal of this era was in order. As research progressed, it became more and more obvious that no adequate treatment of the Mexican period could be attempted until a full understanding of government …

Thomas Paine:A Study In Social And Intellectual History, Jospeh V. Metzgar May 1965

Thomas Paine:A Study In Social And Intellectual History, Jospeh V. Metzgar

History ETDs

Excerpt From Preface:

My basic purpose then is to determine how far behind or ahead of his time was Thomas Paine. What was his relationship to the Enlightenment when one considers his political, social, or scientific thought? And finally what is his significance in social and intellectual history? Is Thomas Paine actually a thinker of "the second order of greatness" as Cecelia M. Kenyon and others contend or intimate? Or has he proved to be greater than that? I would hope to provide some possible answers to such questions.

Finally, I have no intention of trying to determine direct and …

The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins May 1965

The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins

History ETDs

Conflict is the inevitable result of a situation in which there is a large demand for water which is in short supply. And the Upper Basin of the Colorado River today offers no exception to that rule. The Eastern boundary of this Basin is the Continental Divide, meaning that water flowing on the eastern side of the divide will flow into the Atlantic Ocean and that west of it will flow into the Pacific. Each side of the Continental divide is hen divided into different river basins, the waters of which do not mingle because of the mountain barriers. Water …

Frontier Problems In New Mexico Preceding The Mexican War, 1840-1846, Ward Alan Minge May 1965

Frontier Problems In New Mexico Preceding The Mexican War, 1840-1846, Ward Alan Minge

History ETDs

The original intent of this paper was to examine some phase of the interrelationship of the Mexican, Indian, and United States' cultures in New Mexico during the two decades of Mexico administration. Research soon revealed that cultural conflicts only contributed their share to the problems which existed on this frontier. Identification of the problem areas narrowed the period of interest of the few years preceding the "bloodless conquest" of New Mexico by the United States. These years, roughly from 1840 to 1846, saw the culmination of a combination of circumstances over which New Mexican officials had little or no control. …

The Roots Of Patriotic Extremism:The National Security Leaue And The Great Red Scare., Fred G. Morgner May 1965

The Roots Of Patriotic Extremism:The National Security Leaue And The Great Red Scare., Fred G. Morgner

History ETDs

America’s first significant contact with communism occurred during the months immediately following World War I and was characterized by a predominant mood of intolerance and hysteria. During this period a small but influential group of Americans devoted their complete time and energy to combat radicalism and to promote 100 per cent Americanism. The National Security League was one of the most powerful spokesmen for these individuals. A study of the League is important in understanding how militant anti-radicalism emerged as a vital form of nativism during the Red Scare of 1919-1920.

United States Dollar Diplomacy In China During The Taft Administration, In Suk Ro May 1965

United States Dollar Diplomacy In China During The Taft Administration, In Suk Ro

Masters Theses

I. Introduction

The fundamental aims of a nation's foreign policies are national security and the achievement of national objectives through diplomacy. At different periods in American history, the foreign policy of the United States has been designed to advance a variety of aims. It is possible, for example, to speak of missionary diplomacy, moral diplomacy, military diplomacy and dollar diplomacy. The latter characterizes one phase of economic foreign policy in which the administration of President William Howard Taft represents a dramatic turning point. The foreign aid programs of the period after World War II, such as the Marshall plan and …

A History Of The Wpa In Utah, Larry H. Malmgren May 1965

A History Of The Wpa In Utah, Larry H. Malmgren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the 7th decade of the twentieth century, a period of prosperity and economic advancement, it is difficult to understand the tragedies of the "Great Depression" that began in the 1920's and lasted until the early 1940's in these United States.

Many of today's fathers and mothers remember their childhood as a period of want hunger because they were "children of the depression." Many grandparents remember the loss of their jobs, empty cupboards, idleness and widespread poverty, because they were the "parents of the depression." In today's society, relief is often taken for granted, and governmental agencies are expected to …
