The Mexican Federalist-Centralist Struggle, 1824-1860, Michael C. Meyer Nov 1960

The Mexican Federalist-Centralist Struggle, 1824-1860, Michael C. Meyer

History ETDs

The problem of Mexican Federalism has been seriously debated by Latin American historians and political theorists. Does the present Mexican political structure, when viewed in conjunction with the unique functioning of Mexican Politics, justify the federal designation? Conscientious observers are in close unanimity on the answer. Federalism, in the "traditional" sense of the word, does not exist in Mexico today. As one leading observer has stated, "the seeds of centralism were sowed at Querétaro despite the adoption of the federal form provided for the 1917 constitution." Numerous studies appearing both in books and periodicals have reached the same conclusion. It …

Gladstone, The Irish Home Rule Question, And Its Effect On The Liberal Party, Kenneth John Van Dellen

Masters Theses

Introduction

Purpose

The Victorian Age of English history produced many great political leaders. Among the best known are Chamberlain, Disreali, Palmerston, Salisbury, and Gladstone. These politicians were able to pacify many dissatisfied groups and produce many reforms. Yet one of the biggest problems they had to face was left unsolved throughout the Victorian period, and the later Edwardian period as well. This problem was Ireland.

This research project will deal with the man who made one of the most persistent efforts of the nineteenth century to solve the Irish problem. It will attempt to show how William Ewart Gladstone become …

Protestantism In Brazil: A Study Of The Activities And Results Of The Protestant Foreign Missionary Movement In The United States Of Brazil, Robert Martin Farra

Student Work

The purpose of this paper is to examine the development of Protestantism in Brazil, in an effort to determine the validity of some of the charges made against Protestant missions in that land by spokesmen for the Roman Catholic Church. The problem will be considered in two different ways. First, the author will seek to demonstrate the inadequacy of religious instruction and leadership provided the people of Brazil by the Roman Catholic Church in the several periods of that country’s history. Secondly, he will endeavor to trace the steps by which various individual Protestants and organized Protestant mission agencies, independently …

The Development Of The Latin American Policy Of Cordell Hull, Francis Mccorkill Jul 1960

The Development Of The Latin American Policy Of Cordell Hull, Francis Mccorkill

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This thesis discusses the formulation by Secretary of State Cordell Hull of the “Good Neighbor” policy in United States-Latin American relations between 1933-1937. After providing the background of United States’ relations with Latin America before 1933 and the background of Cordell Hull, the thesis discusses first the conference held in Montevideo. This conference presented an opportunity for Mr. Hull to meet personally the Latin American countries and to enunciate the new American policy of non-intervention and friendship. The discussion of the new non-intervention policy includes both the abrogation of treaties which gave the United States the right to intervene and …

The Irish In New Orleans, 1845-1855, Ruby Nell Gordy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Between the years of 1845 and 1855 over one and a quarter million of Ireland’s population fled to the United States in order to escape dire poverty and almost certain death in their native land. Only a small percentage of these immigrants settled in New Orleans, but this minority group played a significant role in this period of the city’s history. The purpose of this study was to determine how the Irish of New Orleans lived, what social and political problems their presence created, and in what ways they contributed to the growth and development of the city. Newspapers, census …

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey Jul 1960

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study deals with the influence of rivers on the history of Indiana. It is difficult for us to visualize that some of the small streams that we cross many times with hardly a glance, were once the most important link in a vast chain of commerce. The early settler depended on these streams to get his surplus products to market. A glance at a road map of Indiana will reveal the importance that the early settler assigned to rivers and streams. Can you find any city or town of any size that is not located near a stream of …

A Historical Study Of The Missionary Work Of Dr. George W. Butler And An Analysis Of His Influence On Brazil, David Gueiros Vieira May 1960

A Historical Study Of The Missionary Work Of Dr. George W. Butler And An Analysis Of His Influence On Brazil, David Gueiros Vieira

Master's Theses

In August of 1954,many people were astonished to read that the new president of Brazil, Cafe Filho, was a Protestant. When this occurred, it was scarcely known outside of Brazil that the influence o.f the Protestants there is greatly out of proportion to their numbers.

It would be an almost impossible task to try to trace from the United States, the development of the whole Protestant movement in Brazil. Therefore, this writer has limited the scope or this paper to a scant survey of the beginning of the Protestant missionary work in Brazil, and more particularly to a thorough study …

Operations Of The South Atlantic Blockading Squadron Under Admiral Dahlgren 1863-1865, John Joel Culley

History ETDs

The intent of this thesis is to examine the activities of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in its joint operations and maintenance of the blockade, to consider to problems involved, and to evaluate the results. For the purpose of this study, a period of time has been chosen which covers approximately the last two years of the war, from July 1863 to April 1865. There are several reasons for limiting the study to this period of time. To begin with, an attempt to cover the activities of the squadron during the entire war would be too ambitious an undertaking for …

The Richmond Transit Strike Of 1903, Thomas Jefferson Headlee Jr. Jan 1960

The Richmond Transit Strike Of 1903, Thomas Jefferson Headlee Jr.

Master's Theses

A general history of the American Labor movement introduces the reader to the mainstream of trade unionism in the United States. It is the purpose of this paper however, to record the events of only one of the less important incidents in the twentieth century. That this experiment of labor in Richmond, Virginia in the year 1903 should have failed, does not detract from its value to the historian, for the study of even an unsuccessful strike may add to our knowledge of the various unions and anti-unionism. In addition, it certainly behooves us, as Richmond's, to learn something further …

The Pratt-Newman Debate, Robert Duane Hatch Jan 1960

The Pratt-Newman Debate, Robert Duane Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

The colorful history of Mormon polygamy has many interesting stories to tell, and one of the most interesting is that of Rev. Dr. J. P. Newman's debate with the Mormon Apostle Orson Pratt on "Does the Bible Sanction Polygamy?" This debate was held at the New Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 12, 13, and 14, 1870. Newman was the Chaplain of the United States Senate and one of the foremost preachers of Washington, D.C. His appearance in Salt Lake City to debate the question of polygamy was a national topic. Probably never before, nor since, has so …

Fred T. Dubois, Foe Of The Mormons: A Study Of The Role Of Fred T. Dubois In The Senate Investigation Of The Hon. Reed Smoot And The Mormon Church, 1903-1907, Jay R. Lowe

Theses and Dissertations

In the year of 1903, the right of Reed Smoot to take his seat in the United States Senate was challenged in a protest signed by nineteen prominent citizens from Utah. The protest was submitted to the Senate Committee of Privileges and Elections, a member of which was Fred T. Dubois, Senator from Idaho. The protest charged that the Mormon Church was still practicing polygamy and exercising political domination of its members and that therefore Reed Smoot, an Apostle and leader of this church, was unfit for senatorial obligations. Dubois, believing the worst concerning these charges, took it upon himself …

A Study Of The Congressional Hearings On The Dismissal Of General Macarthur, Byford Scott Jan 1960

A Study Of The Congressional Hearings On The Dismissal Of General Macarthur, Byford Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The eye witnesses against MacArthur were members of the Truman Administration. Acheson and Marshall were the principal critics of MacArthur’s stand. Secretary Acheson testified that MacArthur had done a fine job in Japan and our allies agreed without policy there. Acheson replied to the alleged lack of policy by making a distinction between our policy and our war aims. Our policy in Korea looked to a unified, independent democratic government, but our war aim was to stop the attack on South Korea. Regarding the proposal that the United States take unilateral action if our allies did not support us, he …

An Inquiry Into The Influences Of American Democracy On The Arab Middle East, 1819-1958, Edward A. Raleigh Jan 1960

An Inquiry Into The Influences Of American Democracy On The Arab Middle East, 1819-1958, Edward A. Raleigh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present en analysis of the American contributions to democracy in the Arab Middle East. Research will be confined, for the most part, to the American impact upon the United Arab Republic, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Iraq between 1819 and 1958. Yemen, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the Trucial Sheikdoms will be treated incidentally because the American impact was so slight as to be virtually non-existent; while Turkey, although not an Arab country, will be studied in some detail in the chapter on Education primarily because of Robert College and the part it played …

The Role And Function Of The Seventies In Lds Church History, James N. Baumgarten Jan 1960

The Role And Function Of The Seventies In Lds Church History, James N. Baumgarten

Theses and Dissertations

Joseph Smith organized a group called Seventies in the Mormon Church early in 1835. They are one of three primary groups in the Higher or Melchizedek Priesthood. They were said to be Elders with a special calling to preach the Gospel among the nations of the earth. Their calling was said to be apostolic because they were to assist the Twelve Apostles in preaching the Gospel and administering Church affairs under their direction. They were a general Church Quorum, and not considered a part of stake organization.

The Seventies were established in their calling as missionaries in the time of …

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi Jan 1960

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An intelligent understanding of international relationships requires a special study of the critical places where continuous crisis arises. It was felt, therefore, desirable to examine a significant aspect of the conflict between the Arab World and the State of Israel that provides the subject of this study.

The economic boycott of Israel has assumed a grave significance in international relations, yet to the author's knowledge this subject has not been investigated in a scholarly and comprehensive manner in any available publication. The writer embarks on this topic in the hope that it may provide the American student of Middle Eastern …

An Analysis Of The Physical Education Programs Of The 165 California Secondary Schools, Collie Jean Kidwell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

At the present time there are many books written on the field of physical education which have set standards of methods, techniques, and procedures used in the teaching of physical education. There will also be found in these books a set pattern of physical education activities which should be taught in our schools. Due to the change in trends, partly brought about by the last war, it will be found that there has been a modification of the methods, techniques and procedures now being used.

The problem of the study deals with the trends in boys' physical education programs to …
