Cutting Out Worry: Popularizing Psychosurgery In America, Antonietta Louise Iannaccone
Cutting Out Worry: Popularizing Psychosurgery In America, Antonietta Louise Iannaccone
Antonietta Louise Iannaccone
Contemporary Americans think of the lobotomy as an utterly primitive and brutal form of psychosurgery. The film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, especially, popularized the image of it as a violent form of suppression and mind control. But when it was first introduced, the procedure was considered compassionate, effective, and so delicate it was compared to “cutting through butter.” The therapeutic effect was described as “cutting out worry.” Between 1936 and 1978 it is estimated that 40,000 psychiatric patients received lobotomies in the United States; the procedure was not only tolerated, it was popular. How did it ever gain …

China: Re-Emerging, Not Rising, Dylan Kissane
China: Re-Emerging, Not Rising, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
In late 1993 Nicholas Kristof argued in the pages of Foreign Affairs that “the rise of china, if it continues, may be the most important trend in the world for the next century”. Fifteen years later two things are clear: there is no longer any reason to wonder if China’s rise will continue and the impact of this surge in the East is now clearly the most important trend in international politics this century.

They cover the history of metallurgy, industrial minerals, history of mining, and selected topics such as refractories, metal casting, welding, and mining equipment.
Ideological History And The Secession Rhetoric Of Texas Politicians, William J. Chriss
Ideological History And The Secession Rhetoric Of Texas Politicians, William J. Chriss
William J Chriss
This article deals with an episode in the ideological history of Texas. It analyzes the rhetorical strategies employed by Texas politicians during the Secession debate, in order to better understand the political thinking of the people who responded to them. The primary prism through which the strategies of each side are viewed is the extent to which they marshaled analogies from classical history and literature in support of their arguments. Because the unionists in Texas adopted for themselves the role of wise philosophers denouncing mob violence, they often used classical literature and examples from ancient and medieval republican history to …

The Theban Prelude To Alexander’S Greatness, William J. Chriss
The Theban Prelude To Alexander’S Greatness, William J. Chriss
William J Chriss
The history of Greece during the early fourth century B.C.E. is often overlooked as a mere interlude between the end of the Peloponnesian War and the beginning of the Hellenistic era. It is as if Athens’ defeat in the Peloponnesian War and Macedon’s victory at the Battle of Chaironea almost seventy years later marked a single event: the fall of Athens and the rise of Alexander the Great. While movies and popular literature leave many casual students with the impression that Athens and Sparta comprised a uniformly bipolar classical Greece that was somehow “conquered” by Alexander the Great, this oversimplifies …
Relativism, Reflective Equilibrium, And Justice, Justin Schwartz
Relativism, Reflective Equilibrium, And Justice, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
THIS PAPER IS THE CO-WINNER OF THE FRED BERGER PRIZE IN PHILOSOPHY OF LAW FOR THE 1999 AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE BEST PUBLISHED PAPER IN THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS.
The conflict between liberal legal theory and critical legal studies (CLS) is often framed as a matter of whether there is a theory of justice that the law should embody which all rational people could or must accept. In a divided society, the CLS critique of this view is overwhelming: there is no such justice that can command universal assent. But the liberal critique of CLS, that it degenerates into …
