Contemporary Americans think of the lobotomy as an utterly primitive and brutal form of psychosurgery. The film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, especially, popularized the image of it as a violent form of suppression and mind control. But when it was first introduced, the procedure was considered compassionate, effective, and so delicate it was compared to “cutting through butter.” The therapeutic effect was described as “cutting out worry.” Between 1936 and 1978 it is estimated that 40,000 psychiatric patients received lobotomies in the United States; the procedure was not only tolerated, it was popular. The British East India Company in the 18th century and Wal-Mart in the 21st century share synonymous business practices: the exchange between a less developed nation's unlimited labor force and a developed country's insatiable appetite for cheap garments. By contrasting two events of corruption charges, the Warren Hastings' Trial of the Century and the Tazreen Factory Fire of 2012 illustrate how the accountability of the exchange between the merchant and the suppliers has shifted.

Landscapes Of Freedom And Inequality: Environmental Histories Of The Pacific And Caribbean Coasts Of Colombia, Shawn Van Ausdal

In this comparative environmental history, we examine the divergent trajectories of Colombia’s coastal forests since the mid-19th century. In the Pacific lowlands, natural resource extraction by a black peasantry altered the forested landscape but did not transform it completely. Left by the white, merchant elite in charge of the extractive process, this post-emancipation society maintained their territorial independence and avoided significant internal differentiation. Racial divisions, however, signaled the continuation of disparities that had their origin in slavery and colonialism. In the Caribbean, by contrast, the expansion of cattle ranching better integrated the region into the nation, but at the expense …

For a generation that doesn’t relate to the ‘eighties’, fondly remembers the ‘nineties’, and came of age in the two thousands, we often think of the sixties with a bit of nostalgia; reminiscing about Woodstock, and hippies, the nuclear family or maybe the Beatles. Unfortunately, much of this understanding is isolated within a bubble; wherein the sincere socioeconomic issues of the time, often become detached from their idealistic counterpart. To clarify, the causal relations that gave rise to what my generation remembers and typifies as the ‘sixties’, becomes distorted within the context of the rapidly changing times.

To commemorate the centenary of World War I, Europeana has initiated a couple of projects under the header of Europeana 1914-1918. One of these is Collection Days. Modelled on the British antique road shows, at a Collection Day, people turn up with their 1914-1918 memorabilia and have them digitized and catalogued on the spot. They also get to tell their family story, which is the main thing. In this project, the object supports the story rather than vice-versa. It is no surprise that Europeana, Europe's online cultural archive, will be commemorating the start of World War I in 1914. With the help of eight national and major libraries across Europe, Europeana is ammassing digitized versions of relevant materials that illustrate the impact of the war into the Europeana Collections 1914-1918, which will be officially launched in 2014. Despite the vast research conducted on radical activist history of late nineteenth century Chicago, there is very little that examines political and social ideologies that diverged from the westernized male archetype of the era. Furthermore, the contrived disciplinary divide that separates scholarly study into artificial and static compartments such as labor history, anarchist history, women’s studies or others, oversimplifies the contributions of individuals that straddle all categories of endeavor. This thesis examines the influences on and evolution of the Irish Republican Army’s guerrilla war strategy between 1917 and 1921. Utilizing newspapers, government documents, and memoirs of participants, this study highlights the role of propaganda and political concerns in waging an insurgency. It argues that while tactical innovation took place in the field, IRA General Headquarters imposed policy and directed the conflict with a concern for the political results of military action. While implementing strategies necessary to effective conduct of the war, this Headquarters staff was unable to reconcile a disjointed and overburdened command structure, leading its disintegration after the …

The Term Ebira is synonymous with behaviour and character. It may either be good or bad. The Latent and manifest meaning of Ebira is good behavior, according to Yaqub (1999), the Ebira person was known to be hospitable, loving, caring, responsible, lawful, resourceful etc. The decay in the people’s social, political behaviour in recent time has put them at a crossroad, thus, demeaning its name Ebira (good character). The legacies of ideal virtues bequeathed to the people by their forefathers have been eroded by lack of dedication, commitment and centralized command structure which is the crux of the paper.

The advance of technology profoundly impacts how people interact with culture as the proliferation of digital networks transforms the effects of copyright in modern societies. This paper argues that the oligopolistic conditions of content markets and the legal discourse of intellectual property law have historically enabled copyright holders to promote a limited conception of art and obscure the complexities of copyright theory. While conceptual ambiguity is inevitable in the construction of aesthetic legal categories, current practices impose too many restrictions. The practical choices made concerning copyright in cyberspace will determine the evolution of culture in increasingly networked societies. The music …
