Red Devil Or Tragic Hero? Osceola As Settler-Colonial Icon, C. S. Monaco
Red Devil Or Tragic Hero? Osceola As Settler-Colonial Icon, C. S. Monaco
C. S. Monaco
This essay explores the meaning behind America's divergent response to Osceola, one of the most noted of native American war leaders, and the importance of political party affiliation in the construction of his media iconography. Moreover, Osceola's cultural and political significance is placed within the critical context of settler-colonialism. Previous work on this Native leader has bypassed the crucial role of Whig and Democratic political operatives as well as the emergent mass media in the manufacture of a self-serving and highly skewed celebrity image. Thus an essential perspective has been missing from the historiography, a lacuna that is particularly addressed …

Ferguson, The Black Radical Tradition And The Path Forward, Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua
Sundiata K Cha-Jua
Can't you feel it? Feel the temperature dropping? Feel the icy winds blowing? It’s winter in America. Spring and fall seem to have enveloped summer. The chill comes sooner and lasts longer. It’s winter in America. There’s a blizzard coming. The first frost has already fallen, in Ferguson, Missouri, of all places. Ferguson has ripped the veil off. It is now clear for the world to see how the U.S. plans to deal with its black internal colony.
It’s getting dark; it’s nearly midnight. Yes, repressive episodes will continue to increase in frequency and grow in intensity. It’s nearly midnight. …

Competing Loyalties: Nationality, Church Governance, And The Development Of An American Catholic Identity, Margaret Wilson Gillikin
Competing Loyalties: Nationality, Church Governance, And The Development Of An American Catholic Identity, Margaret Wilson Gillikin
Margaret Wilson Gillikin
The Catholic community in Charleston, South Carolina, found itself torn by competing identities and conflicting ideas about how to be Catholic in the new American democracy. During the late eighteenth century hundreds of refugees arrived in Charleston from France and Saint Domingue as a result of the French and Haitian Revolutions, and numerous immigrants from Ireland found their way to Charleston as well. A complicated struggle over who should be their priest, the one chosen by the local trustees or the one appointed by their bishop in Baltimore, developed and tore the worshiping community apart. Debates like the one that …
Slaves To Contradictions: 13 Myths That Sustained Slavery, Wilson Huhn
Slaves To Contradictions: 13 Myths That Sustained Slavery, Wilson Huhn
Wilson R. Huhn
People have a fundamental need to think of themselves as “good people.” To achieve this we tell each other stories – we create myths – about ourselves and our society. These myths may be true or they may be false. The more discordant a myth is with reality, the more difficult it is to convince people to embrace it. In such cases to sustain the illusion of truth it may be necessary to develop an entire mythology – an integrated web of mutually supporting stories. This paper explores the system of myths that sustained the institution of slavery in the …

Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould
Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould

Focusing on internal contradictions within the Israeli left, this essay considers the impact of the historical legacy of anti-Semitism on everyday thinking about Israel and the Palestinian territories. Contesting the view that to criticize Israel is to engage in anti-Semitic defamation, it offers an historical account of how Israel's actions in the West Bank have come to be immunized from conscientious criticism. It also documents how progressive media outlets in contemporary Israel have silenced or otherwise marginalized Israel's most active critics.

Soul/R&B legend, Wilson Pickett was nominated for a Grammy in 1999 for the song “It’s Harder Now.” Pickett’s soul classic resonates with me in part because I find teaching African American history “harder now.” It is especially difficult to teach the sociohistorical period known variously as “the age of Jim Crow” or “Segregation.” Students don’t see the segregated South of the post World War II era as harrowing as Slavery or as rancorous as the Nadir, 1877-1923. Why is teaching African American history to this generation of college students such a difficult task? Why is the era of “Segregation” and …
