Italian Civilian Internment On South Australian Revisited

mia.spizzica@monash.edu

During the Second World War, almost five thousand Italian civilians were interned in Australia as enemy aliens. Almost every Italian family was affected from the removal of their breadwinner. The largest of the Australian internment camps was Loveday in South Australia. At it's peak it held about 6,000 civilian enemy alien inmates. This article offers some insight into the experiences of some of the Italians who were impacted by civilian internment.

R. Scott Byram, Ph.D.

Index to ARF Contributions Volume 65.

Volume Abstract:

Archival maps and other field records from nineteenth century surveys of the Pacific Coast of North America are examined for archaeological information using site records, historical documents and landscape characteristics as context. Over fifty archaeological and historical site locations are depicted in sketches, mapped coordinates, topographic maps and narrative text. Representing the early phase of archaeological use of the US Coast Survey materials at the National Archives, this volume demonstrates the wealth of material yet to be incorporated into West Coast research.

Resorts And Reform: Archaeology At The Wiawaka Holiday House, Lake George, New York, Megan E. Springate Jan 2012

Resorts And Reform: Archaeology At The Wiawaka Holiday House, Lake George, New York, Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

The Wiawaka Holiday House on Lake George, New York is among the oldest continuously operating women’s holiday retreats in the United States. The Holiday House was founded on the grounds of a failing resort hotel at the turn of the twentieth century by wealthy women largely from industrial families to provide factory “girls” opportunities for healthful vacations in the countryside. Before the Holiday House was established, the property was the site of two resort hotels; their histories, spanning much of the nineteenth century, reflect the rise and transformations in the Adirondack resort hotel business. Presented in the early stages of …

The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky Jan 2012

The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky

ELLIOTT LIPINSKY

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation that administers federal funds and provides technical assistance for the support of locally operated public transit systems. MARTA / Atlanta metro area are part of FTA Region IV (the Southeast). FTA would be involved, for instance, in financing the federal grant monies discussed above. But actual regulation of operations (i.e., what MARTA does each day, or what MARTA will plan to do regionally) is more closely regulated by Georgia agencies.

Until recently, the Atlanta metropolitan area had no powerful central agency to coordinate regional transit. The …

Where The Tinder Was Lit: Archaeological Excavations At The Wesleyan Chapel, Women's Rights National Historical Park, Seneca Falls, New York, Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

The Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1843, was the location of the First Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. It is now one of several significant structures that make up the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls and Waterloo, New York. Over time, the form and the function of the Chapel building has changed – often dramatically. Archaeological investigations at the Wesleyan Chapel have revealed both the extent of these changes and information about the people associated with the property. Results of these excavations, particularly those conducted in 2008, are presented in the context …

Coffin Handles From The African Burial Ground New York City: Notes On Their Source And Context, Megan E. Springate Jun 2011

Coffin Handles From The African Burial Ground New York City: Notes On Their Source And Context, Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

Coffin hardware refers to both functional and decorative elements, generally metallic, used on coffins and caskets in historic mortuary contexts. Examples of coffin hardware include handles, hinges, caplifters, thumbscrews, name plates, and decorative elements. Although the British industry was well-established in the eighteenth century, the mass-produced coffin hardware industry did not take hold in North America until the middle of the nineteenth century. Coffin hardware use in North America pre-dating the establishment of a domestic industry is not unknown; it is, however, uncommon, and generally has been associated with the burials of high social status or wealthy individuals. That said, …

Many Lohias? Appropriations Of Lohia In Karnataka, Chandan Gowda Oct 2010

Many Lohias? Appropriations Of Lohia In Karnataka, Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

Analysing Rammanohar Lohia’s reception in the spheres of party politics, social movements and literature in Karnataka, it emerges that his impact on electoral politics in the state was not substantial. However, key policy innovations such as Devaraj Urs’ land reforms and pro-backward class policies in the 1970s owed a debt to Lohia. He was also a major influence on social and literary movements in the state. Besides inspiring some of the key leaders of the farmers’ movement, Lohia contributed to the distinctiveness of the dalit movement in Karnataka. His ideas on caste, language and individual freedom also inspired the leading …

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda Jul 2010

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

What governs state interests in development in formerly colonised societies? Conventional social science accounts stress politico-economic variables, particularly the need for capital accumulation. By means of a detailed analysis of the Bhadravati Iron Works, an ambitious industrial project in the state of Mysore in colonial India, it is demonstrated that mechanisms are also important in state-led development. Locational disadvantages, technical problems, and increased production costs made the iron plant an unprofitable venture from its inception. The state, however, kept the plant operational on grounds of its pedagogic value for local society. A claim for civilisational recognition for India’s capacity for …

Squatters Budgeree: Pipes For The Australian Market Recovered At The Homestead Of A Free Black Family In Sussex County, New Jersey, Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

An archaeological data recovery was recently completed by Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. at the Cooper-Mann House site (28-Sx-399), owned from 1862 through 1909 by a single free African-American family in Sussex Borough (formerly known as Deckertown), Sussex County, New Jersey. These excavations were done in advance of a New Jersey Department of Transportation project to realign State Route 23 through the area; the Cooper-Mann House site was considered significant for its long association with the Mann family. Excavations were conducted in 1999 around the exterior of the house, and in 2008, in the building's interior prior to demolition (Richard …

The Imprint Of China’S First Emperor On The Distant Realm Of Eastern Shandong, Gary M. Feinman, Linda M. Nicholas, Hui Fang Jan 2010

The Imprint Of China’S First Emperor On The Distant Realm Of Eastern Shandong, Gary M. Feinman, Linda M. Nicholas, Hui Fang

Gary M. Feinman

Imperial expansion is recurrent in human history. For early empires, such as in ancient China, this process generally is known from texts that glorify and present the perspective of victors. The legacy of the Qin king, Shihuangdi, who first unified China in 221 BC, remains vital, but we have few details about the consequences of his distant conquests or how they changed the path of local histories. We integrate documentary accounts with the findings of a systematic regional survey of archaeological sites to provide a holistic context for this imperialistic episode and the changes that followed in coastal Shandong.

Machhu Longu Kannada Cinema ("Hatchet, Long Sword" Kannada Cinema), Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

Referring to her role in Avva (2008) in a television interview, Shruti, the actress, said: “Her sharp tongue itself is the machhu, longu in the film.” Her analogy affirms the wide popularity of what can be termed the Machhu Longu (ML) films in Kannada, all of which are set in the underworld.
