WLBZ radio evolved from the passion of Thompson Guernsey, an amateur radio buff from Dover-Foxcroft who began experimenting with radio at the age of thirteen. As noted in a piece written by Fred Thompson in The History of Broadcasting in Maine: the First Fifty Years, Guernsey, considered by some to be an eccentric genius, began with homemade receivers and transmitters and an amateur license granted in 1921. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1926, Guernsey began operating WLBZ as a commercial broadcast station from Dover-Foxcroft.

The majority of the publications in this record group were created by the University of Maine's Land and Water Resource Center, which is now known as the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions.

The Land and Water Resource Center was established by the Water Resources Research Act of 1964 and was primarily funded by federal funds. The Center served the goals of stimulation and coordination of research, training and educational activities in the water resources disciplines, including soil suitability and land use. Howard Paul Segal was born on July 15, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Segal first came to the University of Maine in 1986 as an assistant professor of history and also the associate director of the Technology and Society Project in the College of Engineering. In 2020, Segal was awarded emeritus status by the University of Maine.

Founded in 1880, Sewall began offering aerial photography services in the 1940s. The photo archive the company produced captures aerial views of nearly every part of Maine, as well as various locations in New England, Alaska, Canada, and the southern and central U.S. Many regions were photographed multiple times over the course of decades. The collection includes 1 million images.

A small representation of images has been digitized is available to the public through DigitalCommons@UMaine.

In 1883, the Maine Board of Agriculture called for the establishment of a formal experiment station in Orono. With the support of state funds the Maine Fertilizer Control and Agricultural Experiment Station (later becoming the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station). Eventually the Station would expand its research into genetics and breeding, entomology, forestry, food, potatoes, blueberries, and dairy. Such studies have been funded by both state and federal agriculture grants.

Arthur E. Silver was born in 1879 at Silvers Mills, a rural neighborhood named for his grandfather in Dexter, Maine. He graduated from the University of Maine, class of 1902, with a B.S. degree. He received his doctor of engineering (an honorary degree) from the University of Maine in 1954. He was chief electrical engineer for Ebasco Services, Inc., formerly Electric Bond and Share Co. until his retirement in 1948.

In 1951, Silver received the Lamme gold medal award given by the American Institute of Engineering in recognition of his pioneering of rural electrification by designing a simplified farm-type transformer …

Irwin Bruce Douglass was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1904. A scholar, teacher, researcher and humorist, Douglass became a professor of chemistry at the University of Maine at Orono in 1940 and carried out a number of studies into potato starch and the chemical process (and pollution) involved in the pulp and paper industry processes. He retired in 1972 and moved to Vermont where he died in 1998.

The record group mostly contains textual information during Douglass's tenure at the University of Maine, but there are also some photographs of events Douglass attended.

The building was named Murray Hall in honor of former professor of zoology and Dean of College of Arts and Sciences Joseph M. Murray (1937-1941). The University of Maine System developed distance education methods based on interactive technologies to bring higher education to communities across Maine. The network of campuses and sites was known as the "Educational Network of Maine," and was linked by an interactive television system housed on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. A fiber optic spine connected seven university campuses with two way audio and video transmission. From the campuses, programming was distributed by ITFS microwave to over 85 locations in Maine.

This small collection contains primarily drafts of articles and other writing by Dr. Edwards on the subjects of concrete and bridges. Also included are graphs and blueprints presumably gathered and used by him during his career.

Of particular interest are the correspondence and photographs concerning Sewalls Bridge in York, Maine, and the Bowdoinham Bridge in Bowdoinham, Maine, as well as various other photographs of Maine bridges in the 1920s and 1930s, at least some of which were built under the supervision of Dr. Edwards.

Personal papers and business records of three generations of the Johnston family, builders of dams and bridges in Maine. Included are materials of William Jasper Johnston; his son, William Percy Johnston; and Percy's son, Donald Percy Johnston. A few items belonging to John Johnston, father of Jasper Johnston are also found in the collection. The collection includes many photographs of dams and other construction projects of the Johnston family. Included are phorographs and negatives, letters, correspondence, newspaper clippings, diaries, and picture postcards.
