Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History Finding Aids

Ten interviews totaling 23 hours conducted for a course at University of Maine taught by Edward D. "Sandy" Ives in 1976 about a pulpwood operation at Little Musquash Lake run by Grover Morrison. This project included the publication of Northeast Folklore: "Suthin," XVIII. These interviews were the basis of "Suthin:" It's the Opposite of Nothin': An Oral History of Grover Morrison's Wood's Operation at Little Musquash Lake, 1945-1947 (Northeast Folklore XVIII: 1977 ). The University of Maine Woodsmen Team is a co-ed organization dedicated to maintaining the old woods skills and competing on the intercollegiate level throughout the Northeast and Canada. This team has been a University of Maine tradition for over 40 years. The Women's Woodsman's Team first started competing in 1975. Born in Everett, Massachusetts, Richard J. Campana (1918-2005) received a BSF from the University of Idaho in 1943. Campana then served as a surgical technician in the U.S. Army, and earned a Bronze Star award during WWII after being held as a prisoner of war (1943-1946). After the war, Campana earned an MS in Forestry from Yale University in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Forest Pathology in 1952. Soon after, Campana began his professional study and observation of Dutch Elm Disease

Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History Finding Aids

This collection consists of nineteen interviews totaling approximately thirty-two hours conducted by Edward D. “Sandy” Ives in 1986 with men who worked in the woods and on the river drives along the Machias River. In part it grew out of the "Stump to Ship" project in which the 1930 logging film was revived and shown around the state. Many of the interviewees in the Machias River Project came from the audiences for the film.

Founded in 1880, Sewall began offering aerial photography services in the 1940s. The photo archive the company produced captures aerial views of nearly every part of Maine, as well as various locations in New England, Alaska, Canada, and the southern and central U.S. Many regions were photographed multiple times over the course of decades. The collection includes 1 million images.

A small representation of images has been digitized is available to the public through DigitalCommons@UMaine.

The J.F. Witter Teaching and Research Center, the livestock research facility at the University of Maine, often referred to as the Witter Farm, consists of 300 acres of land in Old Town, Maine, near the campus. Until the facility was constructed in 1972, livestock such as cattle and sheep were housed in barns on the main part of the campus in Orono.

The company account registers, 1930 and 1932, contain sections giving financial information about customer accounts, information about business expenses of Sherman Lumber itself, and information about types and amounts of wood supplied to Sherman. The collection contains records of William Engel's timberlands business and of the firm of Lowell & Engel. The records are mainly from the logging and lumbering operations carried on by Lowell & Engel in the years after William Engel's death in 1909.

The major part of the collection contains bills and receipts to Engel's companies. Those from 1902-1908 are primarily bills for insurance, taxes, etc., on Engel's many land holdings. The bills and receipts from 1909 on are from the logging and lumbering side of the business and focus on supplies and equipment needed for the various logging camps.

Duncan Howlett was born in 1906 in Newton, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard, receiving an LLB degree in 1931. After practicing law for two years, he returned to Harvard in 1933 to study religion, receiving an STB degree in 1936. He was ordained to the Unitarian ministry in 1936 and served in churches in Salem, New Bedford, and Boston, Massachusetts. He moved to Center Lovell, Maine, and began to manage the forestland adjacent to his home. The Coe family papers consist primarily of business records of the brothers Eben S. Coe and Thomas Upham Coe, with a few papers of Thomas's wife, Sada L. Coe. The materials reflect the involvement of the Coes in land acquisition and management and the lumber industry in the northern part of Maine, as well as Eben Coe's partnership in the S.R. Bearce and R.C. Pingree companies in Lewiston, Maine. Much information is also included about the administration of the very sizeable estate left by Thomas Upham Coe at his death in 1920.
