The University of Maine was founded in 1865 as the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts; in 1897 it became the University of Maine. The board of trustees for the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts met for the first time in Augusta on April 25, 1865. The board contained 16 members representing the counties of the state.

The papers of Brooks Hamilton, including personal information, correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper articles, course materials, information on public service activities, and materials relating to current legal issues in the field of journalism.

Before joining the University of Maine staff in 1952 Hamilton served as city editor of the Daily Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was instrumental in the drafting and passage of Maine's "Right to Know" law in 1959.

The Spectator Club collection contains copies of the club constitution, a history of its founding, group photographs of members taken on three different dates, a list of program topics, a few event programs, letters, bills, receipts, and minutes from meetings 1911-2000. Many of the letters offer thanks for support of various causes. Other letters thank the group for gifts and condolences following the death of one of the members. Minutes include detailed accounts of meetings along with lists of officers, members, attendance, speakers, entertainers, topics, dues, expenditures, and treasurer's reports.

The group was formed in 1971 as an ongoing body to act in an advisory capacity to the University of Maine president to make recommendations concerning new policies reflecting the caning nature of the working environment.

The Cooperative Extension is part of the nationwide Cooperative Extension System, which works through the land-grant universities in each U.S. state. Maine’s land-grant university is in Orono at the University of Maine.

The records mainly contain textual information created by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, but there are also photographic, visual, and audio visual material. Some of the report record series also contain photographs of Cooperative Extension Service operations, events, and staff. The reports submitted during the First World War and Second World War years detail the effects the wars had on agriculture in Maine.

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, located in Deer Isle, Maine, was founded in 1950 by a group of craft artists in Belfast, Maine. The University of Maine Counseling Center offers counseling for students and faculty/staff and delivers outreach and education including various workshops, presentations, and suicide prevention efforts, made possible by the grant funded Touchstone Project. The University of Maine System developed distance education methods based on interactive technologies to bring higher education to communities across Maine. The network of campuses and sites was known as the "Educational Network of Maine," and was linked by an interactive television system housed on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. A fiber optic spine connected seven university campuses with two way audio and video transmission. From the campuses, programming was distributed by ITFS microwave to over 85 locations in Maine.
