Collection contains architectural drawings and records of Edward Leander Higgins and his son Ambrose S. Higgins, including office records, specifications, plans and elevations, architectural renderings, correspondence and blueprints for a wide variety of buildings mostly in the state of Maine. Represented in the collection are plans for business, public and residential structures in Bar Harbor, Ellsworth, Skowhegan, Portland, Camden and Cape Elizabeth among others.

The collection contains approximately 26,760 postcards covering a wide variety of places and subjects. It also contains cards signed by various postcard artists. It includes over 8000 postcards arranged by subject, approximately 6000 antique postcards including 650 cards with views of the state of Maine, and 5259 postcards of steamships, battleships, foreign ships, and ocean liners.

The collection contains papers of various members of the Devereux family of Penobscot, Maine, as well as materials from other residents of Penobscot and Castine, Maine. Most notable are letters to Mark Devereux, 1862-1864, from his brother Charles Devereux while Charles was serving in the 16th Maine Infantry in Maryland and Virginia. Documents associated with various other individuals are also found in the collection; their relationship to the Devereux family is unclear.

The University of Maine was founded in 1865 as the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts; in 1897 it became the University of Maine. The board of trustees for the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts met for the first time in Augusta on April 25, 1865. Before joining the University of Maine staff in 1952 Hamilton served as city editor of the Daily Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was instrumental in the drafting and passage of Maine's "Right to Know" law in 1959.

Ellen Louise Payson was born in Portland, Maine in 1894, and trained as a landscape architect at the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women in Groton, Massachusetts. She gained widespread recognition for her designs for private estates in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.

The collection consists of about 525 architectural drawings including landscape architecture plans, contour drawings, planting diagrams and blueprints. There are also detailed drawings of fences, garden paths, outbuildings and gates. Ralph S. Bartlett, born in 1868 in Eliot, Maine, was an attorney who graduated from Dartmouth College in 1889 and from Boston University in 1892. This collection includes travel films made by Bartlett on nine trips he took between 1925 and 1933 to the Middle East, the Arctic Sea and the Baltic states, Europe, Canada, South America, Scandinavia, and Russia. An additional reel contains footage of family members.

The Spectator Club collection contains copies of the club constitution, a history of its founding, group photographs of members taken on three different dates, a list of program topics, a few event programs, letters, bills, receipts, and minutes from meetings 1911-2000. Many of the letters offer thanks for support of various causes. Other letters thank the group for gifts and condolences following the death of one of the members. Minutes include detailed accounts of meetings along with lists of officers, members, attendance, speakers, entertainers, topics, dues, expenditures, and treasurer's reports.

The Cooperative Extension is part of the nationwide Cooperative Extension System, which works through the land-grant universities in each U.S. state. Maine’s land-grant university is in Orono at the University of Maine.

The records mainly contain textual information created by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, but there are also photographic, visual, and audio visual material. Some of the report record series also contain photographs of Cooperative Extension Service operations, events, and staff. The reports submitted during the First World War and Second World War years detail the effects the wars had on agriculture in Maine.
