Once again the Gray was out maned. Then came the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl in which Aloha meant goodbye in any number of ways, and the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl, which asks the question what is a weiser lock and why would you want to lock weisers anyway?

These words of poet John Williams in "The Skaters" came to mind while contemplating the loss of beauty in the world that will result from the death of Sergei Grinkov. At age 28 his death came as a shock not only to those closest too him, but to anyone who has ever watched him and his skating partner perform their routines to near perfection. His partner, Yekaterina Gordeeva was with him on the ice at Lake Placid when he collapsed and died during a practice session some ten days ago.

I went back to the College Preview Edition of The Sporting News and found not a word about him or his likely achievement. A week before the event an occasional mention was made in some of the sports columns across the country. On Saturday, the day of the event it was noted on most football telecasts, and there was even a half-time feature on ABC. And in the sport's television version of damning with faint praise, the game itself was televised on The Deuce, ESPN2, the cable network most of America has never seen.

On Tuesday, the day Cal Ripken tied Lou Gehrig's record at 2130 games, I opened my mail to find the latest copy of Aethlon: The Journal of Sport Literature. On page 55 was a short story titled "Streaks" by David Zang. It is a very funny story of a Baltimore fan who takes it upon himself to end Cal's streak and it involves the O's mascot.

It was just a few weeks ago that we went through the spectacle of Mickey Mantle's liver transplant which gave us a preview of the sort of emotional outpouring that would come at his death. At the time the surgery seemed to be a success and there was hope that Mickey would survive. We now know that this was not to be, as the cancer spread quickly throughout Mickey's body. His doctors tell us that they have never seen such a virulent form of cancer as it moved with incredible speed. But then with Mickey nothing was ordinary.

There are any number of extraordinary stories in sportsworld this week, and most of them have to do with money. First and foremost is the turmoil surrounding the NBA where a very ugly scenario has developed involving an attempt by agents to decertify the Players Association and take total control of the economics of the game. Late Tuesday night came word that a new agreement has been reached by the League and the Players Association, but it remains to be seen if Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and their puppet masters will accept it.

Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday at The Ball Park in Arlington, one of the newest, and by most accounts one of the most beautiful of the new stadiums. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between allstar teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-two years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

It has been a long time since there was so much talk of heroes around the sports scene. Two weeks ago this talk was precipitated by the news that Mickey Mantle was paying the price for his alcoholism and would undergo a liver transplant. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb outpolled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought him one of the greatest, but also a despicable human being. It is this latter view that dominates the portrayal of Ty Cobb by Tommy Lee Jones in this stunning and deeply disturbing film just released on home video.

For an NBA expansion team to go to the NBA finals in its sixth season is a remarkable feat. For that team to be swept in the finals by a clearly superior team is not surprising. The Magic were outmanned, outgunned, outhustled, outcoached and outclassed by one of the great NBA teams of the last several decades. Clearly Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the best centers in the history of the game, and his supporting cast was nearly flawless.

It has been a long two weeks away from the sports scene in the United States. It is really amazing how easily you can be cut off from it, and how unimportant it can seem from a distance of several thousands of miles. Out in the Ural region of Russia there is little news of the NBA or NHL playoffs, and little awareness of the intensity of the American sports scene. However one university student did ask me if I was from the same Orlando where the Magic and Shaquille O'Neil played.
