Bowl Names And Sponsors: Silliness Abounds, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Already some of the big ones are behind us. The annual Blue-Gray Game in which the Confederacy tries to atone for the loss of the big game of 1865 was played in Montgomery, Alabama on Christmas Day. Once again the Gray was out maned. Then came the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl in which Aloha meant goodbye in any number of ways, and the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl, which asks the question what is a weiser lock and why would you want to lock weisers anyway?

Nfl Season Concludes For Dallas, The Bucs And Miami - Florida H.S. Athletic Assn., Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This NFL season has had its share of surprises and disappointments, not to mention bizarre moments. Today I want to concentrate on three stories from this NFL season: the Bucs, the Dolphins, and the Switzer Stumble.

Crime And Punishment In Miami - Tax Evasion On The Autograph Circuit, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Crime and Punishment is one of the great novels of Russian Literature, it is a subject currently in the news in Florida, and it is the theme that unites three stories out of sportsworld this week.

In Memoriam: Sergei Grinkov, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

These words of poet John Williams in "The Skaters" came to mind while contemplating the loss of beauty in the world that will result from the death of Sergei Grinkov. At age 28 his death came as a shock not only to those closest too him, but to anyone who has ever watched him and his skating partner perform their routines to near perfection. His partner, Yekaterina Gordeeva was with him on the ice at Lake Placid when he collapsed and died during a practice session some ten days ago.

Rich Devoss And The Girls - Orlando Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Last week Larry Guest reported on the reluctance of the Orlando Magic to share this city with any other major league professional sports franchise. In the course of his column Guest quoted Magic owner Rich DeVoss as saying about his conversations with County Chairman Linda Chapin and Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood: "I talked to the girls and asked them how many sports dollars are there to go around in Orlando."

Sport As Business - The Nomadic Franchies Of The Nfl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the last several years I have had a running disagreement with a colleague over whether sport is simply a business or if it means something beyond the bottom line. Is there, or was there ever any sentiment in sport? The recent developments involving Cleveland and Baltimore raise these questions once again.

Now that the first World Series in two years has ended it's time to reflect on the season, the playoffs and Series, as well as the current state of the game.

Native American Names And Symbols, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It would seem that we are living in an Age when any major event becomes the occasion for some group or another to grind their proverbial political axe. Sometimes the grinding hits a responsive chord, but at other times it has the effect of fingernails on the blackboard.

Baseball's Status In American Sport And Television, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Sometimes the worst laid plans of mice and men cannot do their damage. In the case of the major league baseball owners again they tried. But try as they might, they haven't been able to destroy the post-season.

Eddie Robinson's Record And Greatness, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I went back to the College Preview Edition of The Sporting News and found not a word about him or his likely achievement. A week before the event an occasional mention was made in some of the sports columns across the country. On Saturday, the day of the event it was noted on most football telecasts, and there was even a half-time feature on ABC. And in the sport's television version of damning with faint praise, the game itself was televised on The Deuce, ESPN2, the cable network most of America has never seen.

The Trial Of O.J. Simpson, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The end of the trial of O.J. Simpson once again raises the question of whether of not this was a sports story. ESPN the all sports cable network covered the trial, had their own expert lawyer analyst, covered the verdict, and had a special on Tuesday night summarizing the case. ESPN Radio along with most other sports talk networks and stations were also on hand to cover the verdict.

Jerry Jones And Revenue Sharing - Lords Of Baseball Fail On Settlement, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is the week of the owners. In the NFL Jerry Jones, liege lord of Dallas, decided to take on his fellow owners in a challenge to one of the leagues oldest and most revered traditions, while at the same time signing Deion Sanders at the price of a king's ransom.

U.S. Open: Seles And Graf, Agassi And Sampras, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

After the Cal Ripken experience last week it's difficult to come back to reality and deal with the assorted goodies that sportsworld has dealt us in recent days. The crime report out of Nebraska shows us that Oklahoma and Miami are not the only programs that harbor troubled youth. The stories out of Dallas involving Jerry Jones, Nike, Pepsi, and Deion Sanders remind us just how central money has become in sport. While local heroes show us the arrogance of fame and fortune at the Waffle House.

Ripkin Catches And Passes Gehrig, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On Tuesday, the day Cal Ripken tied Lou Gehrig's record at 2130 games, I opened my mail to find the latest copy of Aethlon: The Journal of Sport Literature. On page 55 was a short story titled "Streaks" by David Zang. It is a very funny story of a Baltimore fan who takes it upon himself to end Cal's streak and it involves the O's mascot.

In Memoriam: Mickey Mantle, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was just a few weeks ago that we went through the spectacle of Mickey Mantle's liver transplant which gave us a preview of the sort of emotional outpouring that would come at his death. At the time the surgery seemed to be a success and there was hope that Mickey would survive. We now know that this was not to be, as the cancer spread quickly throughout Mickey's body. His doctors tell us that they have never seen such a virulent form of cancer as it moved with incredible speed. But then with Mickey nothing was ordinary.

Money And The Nba - Nbc And Winter Olympics - Track And Field Records, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There are any number of extraordinary stories in sportsworld this week, and most of them have to do with money. First and foremost is the turmoil surrounding the NBA where a very ugly scenario has developed involving an attempt by agents to decertify the Players Association and take total control of the economics of the game. Late Tuesday night came word that a new agreement has been reached by the League and the Players Association, but it remains to be seen if Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and their puppet masters will accept it.

Catching Up After Peace Corps Reunion In Ethiopia, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

When I left a month ago for a Peace Corps reunion in Ethiopia the Phillies were in first place and the Braves were futilely chasing them; Scott Erickson, Mark Guthrie, Kevin Tapani, and Rick Aguellera were all Minnesota Twins; and Wimbledon had just started.

Baseball's All-Star Game, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday at The Ball Park in Arlington, one of the newest, and by most accounts one of the most beautiful of the new stadiums. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between allstar teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-two years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

The Al Davis Oakland Los Angeles Irwindale Raiders are heading back to Oakland; the Chicago St. Louis Phoenix Cardinals are revving the engines on the moving vans headed to Los Angeles; the New York Yankees have signed Darryl Strawberry to a contract to play baseball; the New Jersey Devils have swept the Detroit Red Wings and won Lord Stanley's Cup on their way to Nashville; and Mike Tyson was honored as a hero in a public ceremony in Harlem.

Mickey Mantle, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been a long time since there was so much talk of heroes around the sports scene. Two weeks ago this talk was precipitated by the news that Mickey Mantle was paying the price for his alcoholism and would undergo a liver transplant. Of interest to me was the fact that virtually no one suggested that Mantle was any less a great American hero in the face of his well documented alcoholism.

On Sunday at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York that yearly ritual of induction will take place for the 56th time. Once again those players who have been chosen by the Baseball Writer's Association of America or by the Veterans Committee will have their great day of recognition as being among the elite players of the National Pastime.

Ty Cobb, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Was he the greatest ballplayer of all time? He thought so and told everyone who would and would not listen that he was. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb outpolled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought him one of the greatest, but also a despicable human being. It is this latter view that dominates the portrayal of Ty Cobb by Tommy Lee Jones in this stunning and deeply disturbing film just released on home video.

Magic In The Nba Finals Disappoint, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For an NBA expansion team to go to the NBA finals in its sixth season is a remarkable feat. For that team to be swept in the finals by a clearly superior team is not surprising. The Magic were outmanned, outgunned, outhustled, outcoached and outclassed by one of the great NBA teams of the last several decades. Clearly Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the best centers in the history of the game, and his supporting cast was nearly flawless.

Nba Officiating, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It would be difficult to find any activity in sport as futile as criticizing NBA officials. Ever since the arrival of Shaquille O'Neal, complaining about refs has become one of the biggest growth industries in Orlando. Magic fans, sports writers and commentators, radio and TV broadcasters, Magic officials, coaches and players have all been moaning about the Shaq's treatment by the zebras.

On Sport and Society

It has been a long two weeks away from the sports scene in the United States. It is really amazing how easily you can be cut off from it, and how unimportant it can seem from a distance of several thousands of miles. Out in the Ural region of Russia there is little news of the NBA or NHL playoffs, and little awareness of the intensity of the American sports scene. However one university student did ask me if I was from the same Orlando where the Magic and Shaquille O'Neil played.

100th Birthday Of Babe Ruth, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For a diversion last Friday night I headed off to Shea Stadium for the Mets' home opener with the Cardinals. It was a wild one with the Mets coming from behind to win 10-8. But it was even wilder among the fans. There were fights in the stands too numerous to count, including a evening ending brawl down the left field line that send two fans out on strechers with bandaged heads. No fewer that seven different game stoppages came as fans ran on the field. Some went to center field, one came sliding home, one literally stole third base …
