This finding aid references the papers (primarily correspondence, but also other materials) of John Henry Caldwell, member of the Alabama House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives (1873-1877). Many of the letters were written between Caldwell and his wife while he was away serving in the 10th Alabama Regiment during the Civil War. The bulk of the collection has been digitized and is available through the Library's Digital Collections, and the original materials are located in the Library's Alabama Gallery Special Collections.

This collection contains documentation and a pop-up exhibit (banners relating to presidential history) created for the inauguration of JSU’s 13th President, Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. (appointed president 2019), which occurred on 9 April 2021. Killingsworth attended JSU as a student, graduating in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in geography and in 2001 with a master’s in counseling. He received his Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama in 2016.

This collection contains documentation related to the inauguration of JSU’s 10th President, Dr. Harold Johnston McGee (1937-2012, president 1986-1999), which occurred on 20 October 1986. McGee was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, received his bachelor degree from Old Dominion University, and master and doctoral degrees in counseling from the University of Virginia. Prior to assuming the presidency at JSU, he held various positions, including Vice-president for Administrative Affairs at James Madison University.

McGee’s administration was noted for a 30% enrollment increase, an increase in JSU’s accredited programs, $50 million in capital improvements, and the formulation of the University’s first capital …

This collection contains documentation related to the inauguration of JSU’s 11th President, Dr. William Arthur Meehan (president 1999-2015), which occurred on 7 February 2000. Meehan attended Jacksonville State University as a student, graduating in 1976 with a degree in biology. He began his career in 1977 teaching anatomy and biology at JSU; Meehan later rose through several different positions with the University, including Associate Vice-president for Academic and Student Affairs, before being named president in 1999.

This collection contains correspondence, receipts, dissertation information, speeches, clippings and other miscellaneous materials from Claude Rodolphus (C.R.) Wood (1892-1981), first academic dean of Jacksonville State Normal School. Wood graduated from the Sixth District Agricultural School in Hamilton, Alabama, and went on to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1910. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1912 and a Master of Science in 1914; he also spent some time as a summer school student in 1915 at the University of Alabama. This collection contains photographic prints, newspaper clippings, conference programs, photocopies from various sources, military records, booklets, original essays, and more most likely compiled by Ralph Rogers Wheeler (1918-2004), an Alabama native. Items relate to Wheeler’s life and especially his military service and time as a Japanese prisoner of war. Beginning in 1942, he was first housed in a prison camp in the Philippines, and then sent via ship to a prison camp near Osaka, Japan. He was rescued in 1945 after Japan’s surrender. The Osborne Family Collection centers on the members of an early African American family who settled in Waterville, Maine after the Civil War. The collection contains materials relating to Samuel Osborne (1883-1904), his wife, Maria Iverson Osborne (1836-1913), and their children: Flora Molly Osborne Strange (1854-1921), Amelia Osborne (1857-1930), and Lulu Clifton Osborne Connor (1864-1907?), all born in slavery in Virginia. The remaining Osborne children: Isabelle Osborne (1868), Annie J. Osborne (1869-1901), Alice E. Charles Henry Smith was born on November 1, 1827 in Hollis, Maine. He graduated from Waterville (Colby) College in 1856, and became the principal of Eastport High School until 1860. After the call for Volunteers to serve in the Civil War, Smith enlisted and was recruited Captain of Company D of the 1st Maine Cavalry in 1861. He was made Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and then Colonel in 1863. He was in command of the 1st Maine Cavalry at Gettysburg. He was mustered out of the 1st Maine Cavalry in August of 1865. Henry Clay Merriam (1837-1912) was born in Houlton in 1837 and entered Waterville College (now Colby College) in 1860. He enlisted in the 20th Maine Regiment in the spring of 1862 and served under Joshua Chamberlain. After the Union Army decided to allow black troops to fight, Maine men were solicited to lead black units. Merriam was one of those willing to do so and in March 1863, he was made commander of the Third Colored Infantry of Louisiana. The 3rd Infantry, later the 73rd Infantry Corps d'Afrique, was considered an excellent fighting unit under Merriam's leadership.

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an influential author and novelist, born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in a household of ardent theologians and abolitionists which included her parents, Lyman and Roxana Beecher, and many of her thirteen siblings, notably her brother, Henry Ward Beecher. She received an advanced education for a woman of her time at the local seminary for girls run by her sister Catharine. In 1836, she married the abolitionist Calvin Ellis Stowe; the couple supported the Underground Railroad and sheltered fugitive slaves. In 1850, Stowe began writing installments of her best-known work, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," which had a profound …

The Brooklyn College Student War Correspondence collection, consists of .75 cubic feet of documents pertaining to the challenges, hopes, fears and experiences faced by Brooklyn College soldiers during World War II. Arranged in alphabetical order, there are about 69 students whose correspondence has been preserved. Besides letters, soldiers also mailed back home picture postcards, musical compositions, and dramatized skits and whatever artistic talent they were able to produce during the hour of war. William ReQua and his brother Charles founded ReQua Brothers in 1886, and were grain merchants and members of the Chicago Board of Trade. Susan Eloise Gallup was the daughter of Delia Susanna Hulburd and Benjamin Ela Gallup, a Chicago lawyer.

The Brooklyn College Country Fair was instituted in 1938 as a way to raise money for the Student Loan and Scholarship Fund as well as a way to promote relations between the various student-social organizations on campus. The elements of the Country Fair drew upon the history of the Brooklyn College campus, which had originally been a rural field area that hosted various sporting events as well as the Barnum and Bailey Circus once-a-year.
