A critical price was paid at the Battle of Shiloh by the Ninth Illinois, a regiment made up of mostly German immigrants who had not even been born in the United States but gave their lives willingly and bravely in the face of grim odds to defend the land they called home. In the end, the Ninth had one of the war’s highest single-day casualty rates of any regiment of troops, North or South.
