"Whoso Sheddeth" : Execution Sermons And Narratives In 18th Century New England, Adrienne H. Thornblom
Master's Theses
Murder, theft, and infanticide in eighteenth-century New England were all treated with the same punishment, public execution. The executions were not just public displays, but also a time for sermons and life lessons to teach those who witness the criminal's death to refrain from sinful behavior. At the core of every sermon was the Biblical passages used to warn the onlookers to be careful in life and a pea for the criminal to repent. In addition to the sermons, some of the criminals provided confessions to their crimes and even indicated their newfound salvation for their sins.

Diplomatic Disobedience In American History 1781-1807, Thomas Lynwood Powers
Honors Theses
The United States of America owes much to its disobedient diplomats. They secured for this country its independence and original boundaries and later gained the expansion of these boundaries.
This paper examines early examples of such disobedience. It deals with the acts themselves, the viewpoints of the givers and the violators of instructions, and the overall significance to the United States.
The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows
The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows
Honors Theses
Temperance is an organized reform began at the end of the American Revolutionary War, its leaders inspired by the ravages dealt by alcoholics to the soldiers and sailors. Limited as it was, the temperance crusade, led by the aristocracy and the clergy, was naturally gradual in acquiring acceptance and strength. The course of its development from the 1780's until the mid-1830's was one of moderate demands, as compared with the later extremism, and one led by the fiery clerics and their assemblies, compared to the later common lay leadership.

Slave Life In Virginia Between 1736-1776 As Shown In The Advertisements Of The Virginia Gazettes, Florence Lafoon
Honors Theses
Newspapers are an invaluable index to a period and the personalized Virginia Gazettes are particularly revealing of the attitudes of the Colonial period. Although the advertisements for runaway slaves give more of the master's feeling for the slave than the life of the slave himself, it is hoped that the writer has sufficiently drawn forth the inferences toward this latter point to make all that is available clear. There are no copies of the Virginia Gazette between the years 1739/40 - 1744/45, and 1746 - 1766. This would make a great difference to a chronology of any kind, but the …
