Book Review: Jewish Salonica: Between The Ottoman Empire And Modern Greece. By Devin E. Naar., Bedross Der Matossian
Book Review: Jewish Salonica: Between The Ottoman Empire And Modern Greece. By Devin E. Naar., Bedross Der Matossian
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Research on the transition of nondominant groups in the territories of the Ottoman Empire from empire to nation-state remains in its infancy. The book under review by Devin Naar is a masterly account of the ways in which the Jews of Salonica adapted themselves and negotiated their boundaries during and after the transition from the multicultural, multireligious, and multinational Ottoman Empire to the homogenizing nation-state of Greece.
With a reputation as a place of Jewish refuge, Salonica has been one of the most important centers of Sephardic Jewry since the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. This once proud …
Book Review: Blood Will Tell: Native Americans And Assimilation Policy By Katherine Ellinghaus, Baligh Ben Taleb
Book Review: Blood Will Tell: Native Americans And Assimilation Policy By Katherine Ellinghaus, Baligh Ben Taleb
Department of History: Faculty Publications
During the allotment process (1887–1934), the United States established commissions and agencies nationwide to categorize Native American individuals as “full blood,” “mixed-blood,” or of any fractional part of African American ancestry, and determine who was (in)eligible for tribal enrollment and allotment. In Blood Will Tell, Katherine Ellinghaus sees this process as “troubling” and places its uneven practices at the core of the American settler colonial project (xv). Although the discourse of blood was almost never explicitly propounded as a deliberate and clear policy of the U.S. government, explains Ellinghaus, its implications diminished the number of Indigenous peoples, revoked official …
Review Of The Land Is Our History: Indigeneity, Law, And The Settler State, By Miranda Johnson, Baligh Ben Taleb
Review Of The Land Is Our History: Indigeneity, Law, And The Settler State, By Miranda Johnson, Baligh Ben Taleb
Department of History: Faculty Publications
On the basis of extensive archival research into legal case files, government policy debates, newspaper reports, and interviews with key participants in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, Miranda Johnson of the University of Sydney has written a well-crafted transnational history of indigenous activism, land, and indigeneity. From the early 1970s through to the mid-1990s, Indigenous activists in these three Commonwealth countries used groundbreaking legal strategies to reclaim unkept promises in aboriginal and treaty rights and seek justice owed to them. In concert with white judges, lawyers, and expert anthropologists, among others, these activists brought forth the importance of the umbilical …

An Analytical Study On Ministerial Organizations Status In The Historiography Of Ravandi, Reza Bitarafan, Fereydoon Allahyari, Ali Akbar Kajbaf
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The ministry organization as a symbol of Iranian sreaming is the important element in Iranian historiography. Reproduction of many of Iranshahri thoughts teachings in Seljuk's period provided background for note historians to ministry organization. With the domination of Turks on Iran was established ministry s status until free rulers of the art of government benefit of ministry's knowledge. Ravandi was one of the important historians in Seljuk's period. However, he extracted his historical narratives from Saljuknameh, but with the completion of them with other sources and analyzing of dates. His book was changed to an important source with a different …
Black Us Army Bands And Their Bandmasters In World War I, Peter M. Lefferts
Black Us Army Bands And Their Bandmasters In World War I, Peter M. Lefferts
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This essay sketches the story of the bands and bandmasters of the twenty seven new black army regiments which served in the U.S. Army in World War I. The new bands underwent rapid mobilization and demobilization with their regiments over 1917-1919. They were for the most part unconnected by personnel or traditions to the long-established bands of the four black regular U.S. Army regiments that preceded them and that continued to serve outside Europe during and after the Great War. Pressed to find sufficient numbers of willing and able black band leaders for these new regiments, the Army turned to …

Compte-Rendu De Lecture De Michel Jouard, De La Domination Coloniale Au Rejet Des Migrants: De L'Indigène À L'Immigré, Baligh Ben Taleb
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Review: Michel Jouard, De La Domination Coloniale Au Rejet Des Migrants: De L'Indigène À L'Immigré, Essais Politiques [From Colonial Domination To The Rejection Of Migrants. From The Native To The Immigrant. Political Essays], Baligh Ben Taleb
Department of History: Faculty Publications
On September 2, 2015, the world was racked by the picture of the 3- year-old Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi who was found lying face down on a beach near the Turkish resort of Bodrum. Aylan was among thousands of migrants and war refugees, including 300 toddlers, who drowned in the Mediterranean attempting to reach Europe that year. To many, his tragic story came to symbolise the gruesome war left behind in Syria and the failure of the international community to end the bloodshed; to others, it is tied to the absence or lack of better European regulations to treat these …
Czech Immigrants In Nebraska: A Question Of Identity And Assimilation, Katharine Meegan
Czech Immigrants In Nebraska: A Question Of Identity And Assimilation, Katharine Meegan
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the dynamics of cultural and social assimilation through the experiences of Czech immigrants into Nebraska. The Czechs' long struggle to maintain their ethnic identity has shaped their experiences with assimilation. After a review of assimilation theory, I conclude that the Czech experience with assimilation follows a “straight-line” assimilation model, a progression of assimilation that is complete by the third generation. Their relatively small size, settlement in rural areas, and a strong desire to maintain ethnic identity, as reflected in the formation of Czech language benevolent associations, gymnastic societies, and Czech language newspapers, led to “social” and “structural” …
Coalitions Matter: Citizenship, Women, And Quota Adoption In Africa, Alice Kang, Aili Mari Tripp
Coalitions Matter: Citizenship, Women, And Quota Adoption In Africa, Alice Kang, Aili Mari Tripp
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
We provide new theory and evidence of the role of domestic women’s coalitions in the adoption of gender quotas. Previous research has shown the importance of women’s movements to policy change. We show that specific types of mobilization, often multiethnic in character, are a more precise way of describing these influences. Using a new dataset of coalitions in 50 countries in Africa (1989–2014), we first examine where coalitions are likely to emerge. Controlling for factors that correlate with their formation, we find that when domestic women’s organizations form a coalition for quotas, governments are more likely to adopt them and …

Systematic Approach To Identifying Deeply Buried Archeological Deposits, Anthony L. Layzell, Rolfe D. Mandel, Courtney L. Ziska, John R. Bozell
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
This project is designed to assist cultural resource specialists involved in Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) project planning and development. The goal was to develop Geographic Information System (GIS) data layers that spatially delineate different landform-sediment assemblages (LSAs) and depict the associated geologic potential for buried cultural deposits in select watersheds in Nebraska. The Nebraska Buried Sites GIS resource will allow planners and cultural resource specialists to determine whether future project areas are likely to be free of deeply buried sites or whether subsurface exploration is necessary.

Into The Void, Or The Musings And Confessions Of A Redheaded Stepchild Lost In Western Legal History And Found In The Legal Borderlands Of The North American West, Katrina Jagodinsky
Department of History: Faculty Publications
At my first American Society for Legal History conference in 2014, I listened with rapt attention as keynote speaker Patty Limerick asked: "Is western history legal history ?" Limerick answered in the affirmative, citing the many ways in which law had defined the North American West. Those of us who teach Western history courses can count the legal acts Limerick recited on our fingers and toes: the 1784 Land Ordinance, the 1787 Northwest Ordinance, the 1790 Trade & Intercourse Act, the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, and every treaty between American Indians and the federal government on one hand; the Missouri Compromises …

Queenship At The Renaissance Courts Of Britain: Catherine Of Aragon And Margaret Tudor, 1503- 1533, Courtney Herber
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Much ink has been spilled in service of Henry VIII and his veritable parade of wives, but not nearly as much has been spent to examine the choices and experiences of those queens and the influence they held over his court. Queens consort in early modern Britain were the most public of housewives, their domestic skills and marriages on constant display for their subjects and contemporaries to see and judge. To navigate the fraught political realities associated with being married to a sovereign, queens needed to quickly learn how to network and did so through various means, not the least …
Anna Of Denmark And Henrietta Maria: Virgins, Witches, And Catholic Queens, Courtney Herber
Anna Of Denmark And Henrietta Maria: Virgins, Witches, And Catholic Queens, Courtney Herber
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In 1604, Anna of Denmark performed as the virgin goddess Pallas Athena in the Vision of the Twelve Goddesses, her first royal English masque. She did so wearing a plumed helmet and a costume fashioned from an old gown from the wardrobe of the late Queen Elizabeth, hemmed to show her legs. Years later, in 1638, the daughter-in-law she would never meet, Henrietta Maria, impersonated an Amazon in the final royal masque of the Caroline period, Salmacida Spolia. Both women had a fondness for masquing, and would utilize the performance genre as a means of establishing a dynastic mythology—with themselves …

W. G. Sebald’S Austerlitz : Architecture As A Bridge Between The Lost Past And The Present, Rumiko Handa
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Architecture has a way of bringing the past to the present for us. It is an important asset, for the experience of the past constitutes a positive moment in our everyday conduct of life, allowing a contemplation on our existential meaning. It is an often neglected aspect, as it lies outside of architecture's aesthetic, functional, or structural realms. Mechanisms at work in effectuating this feature can vary, among which the following are notable: A building may commemorate a particular event or individual by being a monument. A building may refer to the time of its origin by way of its …
Introducing Genealogy To The Academic Library In The 21st Century, Tom Mcfarland, Joan Barnes
Introducing Genealogy To The Academic Library In The 21st Century, Tom Mcfarland, Joan Barnes
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
This case study examines the development of a new program to foster genealogical research in an academic library that did not encourage or promote genealogical research. In early 2014, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries set a strategic initiative of increased outreach. As one way to reach the goal, the staff development officer and the community engagement librarian proposed a genealogical program with three objectives: • to reach out to campus faculty, staff, and students • to involve library faculty and staff • to bring community users into the academic library The staff development officer and the community engagement librarian became …

Conclusions
It is our contention that Thomas Say, Titian Peale, Edwin James, and their colleagues of the Stephen Long Expedition of 1819–1820 were heavily engaged in scientific research, which took the form of the first biodiversity inventory undertaken in the United States. This accomplishment has been overlooked both by biologists and historians, but it should rank among the most significant accomplishments of the expedition. The results of this inventory continue to inform us today about environmental, faunal, and floral changes along the Missouri River in an area that is known to be an ecotone between the deciduous forests of the …
South Korean Nationalism And The Legacy Of Park Chung Hee: How Nationalism Shaped Park’S Agendas And The Future Korean Sociopolitical Landscape, Brandon L. Santos
South Korean Nationalism And The Legacy Of Park Chung Hee: How Nationalism Shaped Park’S Agendas And The Future Korean Sociopolitical Landscape, Brandon L. Santos
Chadron State Graduate Theses
Park Chung Hee (presidential term: 1961-1979) is, arguably, the most significant leader in the Korean Peninsula’s modern history. His governance has many trademark elements that have been thoroughly analyzed. These include his economic plans and violent dealings against his political opposition. One often overlooked variable, however, is the significant traces of early Korean nationalism (1890s-1930s) that defined his regime. Park employed these ideas, although controversial, to completely change a nation that was teetering on the brink of destruction into what is now, one of the most well-known republics in the world – economically, technologically, and culturally. It is important, therefore, …
