In mid-October, it was announced by the city of Portland, Maine that the city would be opening an office to house United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The new office will be located on the fourth floor of One City Center, and officials say that the office will be actively focusing on crimes related to human trafficking, child exploitation, transnational drug trafficking and transnational terrorism rather than illegal immigration and deportation efforts.

Maine Rural Development Council (MRDC), an affiliated program of University of Maine Cooperative Extension, will host a Wabanaki Cultural Awareness Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999 at the Sockalexis Arena on Indian Island. Expected to attend the event are some 100 representatives of Maine's 20 federal and state agencies that provide services and/or resources to Maine's tribal communities. A recent paper by two University of Maine sociology professors indicates that racial prejudice playsa factor in determining support for police use of force.
"Racial Prejudice and Support by Whites for Police Use of Force: A Research Note," was written by StevenBarkan and Steven Cohn, professors of sociology at UMaine. The paper has been published in a recent issue of "Justice Quarterly," the official journal of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
