Typescript of a letter addressed to General J. L. Chamberlain in which Whitaker outlines his participation as chief of staff for Gen. George Custer in the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee's forces on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox. Within the letter, Whitaker confirms, "You were the first person to receive the announcement of the unconditional surrender of General Lee's army at Appomattox Court House at 9 o'clock, April 9th, 1865, under the following circumstances..."

Copies of letters written by Chadbourne to his father Humphrey Chadbourne, his sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Osman Warren, and his sister Harriet Warren of Macwahoc, Maine. Letters were written from Bangor, Maine; Newport News, Va.; Baton Rouge, La.; Donaldsonville, Port Hudson, etc., and describe his service in the 22nd Maine Regiment. Date from his enrollment in Bangor, September 10, 1862 in the Twenty-Second Maine Regiment Infantry Company E until his discharge August 14, 1863.

Typescript also includes two pages of text copied from the 1882 edition of History of Penobscot County about the 22nd Regiment Infantry.

A collection of photocopies of a diary from a soldier in the Civil War who served in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment and of articles from the Broadhead (Wisconsin) Independent, 1862-1866, about the 18th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in which Daniel A. Rogers served. The articles in the Broadhead Independent were written by Thos. A. Jackson. Also included is a letter to Frank A. Rogers from Ed S. Miner written in 1913 about their time together in the war.

The Rogers family lived in Wisconsin during the time of the Civil War. Daniel A. Rogers was born in Somerset County, Maine …

Bill of lading dated Oct. 24, 1850 for shipment of ninety-three slaves from Baltimore to New Orleans on the ship John C. Calhoun, master Captain John C. Lowell. The slaves were to be delivered to J.M. Wilson in New Orleans. Document lists names of slaves, their ages and their price.

PDF provides scans of the original document (a printed form completed in handwriting) and a transcript prepared by Special Collections in 2021.
