Abstract provided by author: Henry A. Milliken, a Great Northern Paper Company logging camp operations clerk 1926-1939, wrote 230 articles for the Bangor, Lewiston and Portland newspapers between 1926 and 1977. He was one of only five West Branch loggers who wrote a substantial amount about their experiences and observations in logging operations and the only writer whose focus was the human nature of the men in the logging operation jobs he wrote about. With all his topics Milliken provides a context that includes how each topic evolved over time and why. The annotations highlight and clarify the nature of …

Abstract provided by the author: Beginning January 1, 1903 the Penobscot Log Driving Company, a confederation of loggers, gave way to Great Northern Paper Company that formed about 1900 and took over log driving operations in 1903. The 1970 drive was the last one and a clean up drive followed in 1971. This compendium of history and pictures (445) of Chesuncook Lake covers the 18 townships with water flowing into it from the north, east and south. Rendezvous at Chesuncook, 1827-1902 is the only comprehensive history of Chesuncook Lake and Chesuncook settlement (village) from 1827 through 1902.

The text’s two major focal points are people and old photographs. Over 350 biographical sketches include surveyors, landowners, lumbermen, drive bosses, loggers, settlers, and builders of dams and boats. For the 170 plus pictures this book is their only aggregate presentation. The photos communicate a history of what the landscape and settlements once looked like and how they changed over the decades in this book.

This Maine history book is the only one dedicated to logging and recreational activity in the river drainages of the Main, South and North branches of the West Branch of the Penobscot River; an area covering 32 townships of some of northwest Maine’s remotest timberlands. Geographically the area is literally west of Chesuncook and north of Moosehead lakes; it does not include the logging history on either lake.

The first chapter provides a context for the subsequent chapters: the area’s early history, routes to the area, and a summary of the evolution of the West Branch drive.
