Anatomy Of Dissent In Islamic Societies, Ahmed Souaiaia Dec 2013

Anatomy Of Dissent In Islamic Societies, Ahmed Souaiaia

Ahmed E SOUAIAIA

The 'Arab Spring' that began in 2011 has placed a spotlight on the transfer of political power in Islamic societies, reviving old questions about the place of political dissent and rebellion in Islamic civilization and raising new ones about the place of religion in modern Islamic societies.

In Anatomy of Dissent in Islamic Societies, Ahmed E. Souaiaia examines the complex historical evolution of Islamic civilization in an effort to trace the roots of the paradigms and principles of Islamic political and legal theories. This study is one of the first attempts at providing a fuller picture of the place of ...

Kriza, Jedinstvo I Osobne Slobode, Matija Kovačević Nov 2013

Kriza, Jedinstvo I Osobne Slobode, Matija Kovačević

Narratives Of War In Islamic Societies, Whose Side Is God On?, Ahmed Souaiaia Jun 2013

Narratives Of War In Islamic Societies, Whose Side Is God On?, Ahmed Souaiaia

Ahmed E SOUAIAIA

The so-called Arab Spring ushered in a new era of conflict that is transforming Islamic societies in unprecedented ways. In the past two years, peaceful protests ousted some of the most ruthless dictators of the Arab world. Then, violent rebellions destroyed communities in Libya and Syria, stifled the non-violent movement, and amplified sectarian tensions by interjecting God into some of the most gruesome conflicts. By looking at the Syrian crisis as a case study, in this article I explore the function of narratives in managing war and the nature and evolution of Islamism in Islamic societies.

The Mass. Memories Road Show is an event-based public history project that digitizes family photographs and stories shared by the people of Massachusetts. We work with local communities to organize free public events where everyone is invited to bring photographs to be scanned and included in the archives at UMass Boston. To date, the Mass. Memories Road Show has digitized more than 5,000 photographs and stories from across the state, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. Over time, we plan to visit each of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.

International Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink Apr 2013

International Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Military memoirs are written in many western countries, but who writes them, who publishes them, what is written in them and why they are written can differ from country to country. Some aspects, such as the low number of female writers, are universal, other aspects are warrior nation related, such as the kind of soldiers that get published by traditional publishers, and some aspects are completely country dependent, such as whether reservists publish books, or not. This presentation, given to the PSP (Power, Space and Politics) research group at Newcastle University, gives a quick overview of some of the results ...

“Onde Está A Felicidade?", Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Moscatel Morisco: The Role Of Wine In The Formation Of Morisco Identity, Carolyn Nadeau Jan 2013

Moscatel Morisco: The Role Of Wine In The Formation Of Morisco Identity, Carolyn Nadeau

Carolyn A Nadeau

This article explores how Moriscos adapted to changing political pressures through the food and drink they consumed, specifically through their relationship to wine. To contextualize Morisco wine production and consumption, I first examine the religious, legal and poetic contexts within Muslim-Mudejar history and how wine informed their identity. Using Bourdieu's theory of distinction and the fact that practices as banal as eating and drinking reflect social identity, I then turn to specific case studies. Records of vineyards and wine production, regulatory laws, and an artistic expression of Morisco wine consumption reflect economic, social and cultural realities for Moriscos and ...

Vencer A Crise. Ética, Psicologia E Partidos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Jan 2013

Vencer A Crise. Ética, Psicologia E Partidos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Slaves To Contradictions: 13 Myths That Sustained Slavery, Wilson Huhn Dec 2012

Slaves To Contradictions: 13 Myths That Sustained Slavery, Wilson Huhn

Wilson R. Huhn

People have a fundamental need to think of themselves as “good people.” To achieve this we tell each other stories – we create myths – about ourselves and our society. These myths may be true or they may be false. The more discordant a myth is with reality, the more difficult it is to convince people to embrace it. In such cases to sustain the illusion of truth it may be necessary to develop an entire mythology – an integrated web of mutually supporting stories. This paper explores the system of myths that sustained the institution of slavery in the antebellum United States.
