There are numerous cottage industries associated with outdoor recreation in Maine, including the making of boats, canoes, guns, oars, paddles, snowshoes, sleds, and many types of fishing equipment (e.g., flies, lures, rods, reels, and nets). While the history of some of these items have been explored (e.g., early gun makers and bamboo fly-rod makers), the small-scale manufacturing of fishing lures in Maine has gone unstudied. Even the collectors of North American fishing lures, with a few exceptions (e.g., Dunlap Hook, Rangeley Spinner, and Stanley Aluminum Smelt), have over-looked the Pine Tree State. This article discusses the life and patents of Ephraim L. Dunlap (1831-1914), a farmer and inventor from western Maine. Dunlap's Spring Hook, patented 1 June 1875, is the first piece of terminal fishing tackle made in Maine by a maker who is identifiable.

Trolling Spoons & Baseball: The Life, Lures, And Legacy Of Charles H. Morse, William B. Krohn

“Pop” Morse was a minor league baseball and a fishing-hunting guide. He was also one of Maine’s earliest fishing lure makers, living his adult life in Auburn-Lewiston. In addition to documenting Morse's fishing lures and life, this article discusses the evolution of early trolling spoons in Maine by comparing Morse's spoons to those made by Bill Burgess (Minot, Maine), and the Murray brothers (Auburn, Maine). This article provides a detailed discussion of the fishing tackle business of Henry O. Stanley as a part of Maine's nineteenth century outdoor heritage. Stanley's most famous lure was known as the Rangeley Spinner, and the author traces the history of this and other lures developed by Stanley. Several images are included in the article, including one of Dixfield Village on the banks of the Androscoggin River showing the location of Stanley's tackle shop on Weld Street.

Joshua Gross Rich seemingly lived several lifetimes in the nearly eight decades he spent on earth. During various times, he made a living by trapping, guiding, farming. While living in the Rangeley Lakes region, he sold his winter catch to fur traders and as scientific specimens to Harvard University. Always willing to change with the times, Rich transitioned from being a professional trapper to a trial justice for Oxford County, a pension agent for Civil War veterans, a correspondent for many newspapers, and finally Bethel’s humane officer. Manly Hardy (1832-1910) was a professional fur dealer and an amateur naturalist from Brewer, Maine. During his lifetime, he assembled one of the largest private collections of North American birds. This article documents how Hardy collected his specimens, how and where he housed his collection, and the species in his collection. Also discussed is how the Hardy Collection of North American Birds came to be located today at the Natural History Museum in the Roger Williams Park, Providence, Rhode Island.

Manly Hardy was a nineteenth century businessman from Brewer, Maine. Like his father, Hardy owned and worked farmlands and woodlots, and two wharfs along the Penobscot River. The Hardys’ primary source of income was as dealers in animal hides and raw furs.
