This is a list of newspapers that Special Collections has in the department. Items in this index include the name of the newspaper and the respective date ranges with each title. Newspapers include materials from West Virginia, with fewer newspapers from Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

Miscellaneous Inventories

Marshall University is an official repository for West Virginia State Documents. The West Virginia State Documents are a collection of documents published by various state entities from the state’s inception to today. This includes publications from a variety of public departments as well as the state legislature. The collection includes newsletters, maps, pamphlets, legislative bills, reports, and more.

This collection consists of one muster-out roll for the First Regiment West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, Company K, by Captain Albert L. Haston, Co L, 1st Regiment of West Virginia volunteers from May 14, 1898-Feb 4, 1899.

This collection consists of copies of quartermaster reports for the 5th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry, including monthly property accounts, clothing, stationery, hospital supplies, ordnance materials, animal return and acquisitions, food and fuel receipts, issued supply registers, and correspondence. Due to the nature of copied materials, the legibility and completeness of materials can vary, but is overall high.

Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of a copy of the narration for the four-part documentary "West Virginia," produced by WNP-TV (Morgantown) public television; accompanied by classroom teacher's guide prepared by Osterman Associates. The narration covers only briefly the life of Native Americans living on the land that would become West Virginia, but focuses on the settlement of West Virginia by Europeans to the 1920s.

This collection is composed of Amy Hudok’s collected materials about Edwina Pepper, principally, scanned copies of “The Mountain Call” on CD and a manuscript titled, “Writings of Edwina Pepper” about her experiences in Appalachia. included in the collection is a clipping on Edwina S. Pepper from the “West Virginia Hillbilly” and research notes listing contacts that knew Pepper.

0697: Archibald Debow Norris Diaries, 1861-1863, Marshall University Special Collections

This collection consists of copies and transcriptions of three diaries, spanning January 1861- April 1863, of Private, later Captain, Archibald D. Norris of the 7th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, Co. K during the Civil War, ending with the Fredericksburg campaign. The diaries are extensive, and cover details about the war and specific battles as well as camp life. There are also entries about Norris’ evolving feelings about the state of the union. According to a note in the collection, there are a significant proportion of West Virginia related content in the diaries.

This collection contains files related to the organization of the West Virginia Black History Conference and the Alliance for the Collection, Preservation, and Dissemination of WV’s Black History, as well as other items related to African American history in West Virginia. Material includes notes on presenters and topics as well as clippings, newsletters, and correspondence. The collection is divided into three series: Series I, Conference Materials; Series II, Additional Black History Material; and Series III, Alliance for the Collection, Preservation, and Dissemination of WV’s Black History.

This collection consists of 105 oral histories conducted at the behest of the Matewan Development Center, Inc.. Oral histories are on cassette tapes and include transcripts of the oral histories and floppy disks with some of the transcripts saved on them. The oral histories focus on Matewan history, especially labor issues and conflicts surrounding the Matewan Massacre as well as customs and life in Matewan.

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of items selected by Elizabeth Cometti about West Virginia taken from the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, specifically materials taken from the W. R. Redding Papers, 1861-1865 and the William Thomas Sutherlin Papers, 1842-1892. The Redding materials are from 1861 while Redding was stationed in Virginia, to his wife, Elizabeth M. Redding, in Randolph County, Ga.. He discusses camp life, troop movements and skirmishes, and conditions at home. Sutherlin materials date from 1868 to 1869 and may include correspondence and other papers relate to the varied business …

The collection consists of two boxes containing 12 three-ring notebooks, a third box containing file folders of postmarks and envelopes from states other than West Virginia, also two scrapbooks containing other postmarked envelopes. The bulk of the collection consists of 12 three-ring notebooks containing postmarks and postcards of West Virginia towns and post offices. These notebooks are organized by West Virginia county. Many of the postmarks are on the complete, original envelope, but many have been cut off the envelopes. This collection primarily consists of publications by or contributed to by Berlin Basil Chapman. These publications relate to his interests in West Virginia and Oklahoma history, as well as Chapman genealogy. Also included are photographs of Webster Springs High School Alumni and newsclippings about various speeches given by Chapman. Notable in the collection is a microfilm copy of a manuscript titled “Teaching Soldiers American History Under Direction of the War Department, 1943-1944” Secret Papers Revealed, 1978.

Collection centers primarily on the papers of Daniel Love, pioneer settler of Cabell County, W. Va. and consists of notes, receipts, and memoranda pertaining to the settlement of the estate of his father-in-law, John Chadwick of Kentucky. Another major portion of the collection consists of correspondence to Anna M. Love concerning family genealogy in the 1960s.

They include photographs of people and places around Beckley (both identified and unidentified), mock-ups of front matter for the never completed fourth volume of “Beckley, U.S.A.”, printed materials and ephemera related to Beckley institutions or history.

Other materials include personal papers consisting of short form fiction snippets, a newspaper clipping file related to “Beckley, U.S.A.” and Beckley history, correspondence related to the donation of the collection, and genealogical materials.

This collection has been divided into three series: diaries, research material, and other historical material.

The diaries series is composed of 57 years of diaries by Kraybill recording everything from the weather to his professional life. They encompass time he spent in Wheeling, WV, parts of Pennsylvania, and living in Huntington, WV since 1945.

The research material series is composed of copies of papers read at various West Virginia history meetings, copies of primary source documents, and other papers written or collected by Kraybill in pursuit of his interest in local history.
