The Virginia Monument’S Meaning In Memory, Jonathan Tracey

In the early 1900s, many people began to advocate for Confederate monuments on the battlefield at Gettysburg. However, different motivations were present. Many Northerners saw Confederate monuments as a way to further unity, while Southerners instead used the monuments to preserve a separate identity. The Virginia Memorial is a clear case of this.

The collection includes stories and interviews collected by Michaela Pyle as part of her unfinished biography of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, as well as news stories, correspondence, and artifacts related to her interactions with the Eisenhower family in Gettysburg and her work for the biography. Pyle’s interviews with and recollections of Mamie Eisenhower are unique and detail the former First Lady’s time living in Gettysburg, especially after the death of her husband and former President Dwight D. Adams County History

Adams County had 1,074 men and 12 women in the military in World War I, 53 of whom died while in service, becoming Gold Star soldiers. During this war, the practice of displaying a flag with a blue star was begun to signify that a family member was fighting in the war; when a soldier died, the blue star was changed to a gold star. The term “Gold Star” soldier came to represent a member of the service who died during a time of conflict, and is still in use today.
