Almost a year ago, the Swiss American Historical Society was reactivated at a meeting in New York City. Since then a great deal of work has been done in the effort to make ours a strong and active organization, and I am glad to be able to report that the result so far has been very satisfactory. From the list included in this newsletter you will see that our membership is one of great variety and distinction and that the interest in our work and purpose is lively in many parts of the United States as well as Switzerland. We …

Swiss-American Mennonite History, L. B.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The role of the Swiss and other European Anabaptists (Wiedertaufer) or Mennonites (i.e. followers of Menno Simon, 1492-1559) and other Protestant groups who emigrated to the U.S. as a characteristic element in American social history is studied intensively by Americans interested in their contribution to American culture.

In our first Newsletter we have presented to our readers the American writer Herbert Kubly from New Glarus, Wisconsin. He is so deeply rooted in that community founded by settlers from the canton of Glarus, Switzerland in 1845 that he may even write a novel based on its history which is, at the same time that of his own family.

Swiss Songs On The Emigrants To The U.S., L. B.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Our remarks in the first Newsletter on the Sviss folk song scolding the emigrants to the U.S. for tearing up their citizenship certificate ("Du willst den Burgerbrief zerreissen, den dir das teure Hochland gab") has provoked a well documented comment by the Swiss Consul General in New York, Dr. Hans Lacher, who has collected literature on the different versions of this song from the serious earlier text.to the later ironical deviations most of us remember.

An English Translation Of J.R. Von Salis' Standard Work On Rilke Switzerland, L. B. Jul 1965

An English Translation Of J.R. Von Salis' Standard Work On Rilke Switzerland, L. B.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Among the many publications on the poet Rainer Maria Rilke the book by the Swiss Professor of History Dr. Jean Rodolphe von Salis, until recently President of the Foundation Pro Helvetia, excels by its tactful and sober approach to a delicate subject which all too often has been misused by panegyrists full of loud enthusiasm, but rather bare of substance. When Rilke arrived in Switzerland in 1919, von Salis was nearly eighteen years old and twenty five when Rilke died at Territet in 1926. Von Salis knew Rilke as a guest in his family, but more and more also in …

The Americanization Of Raetic ( Romanish, German, Italian Family Names From The Canton Grisons, Switzerland Jul 1965

The Americanization Of Raetic ( Romanish, German, Italian Family Names From The Canton Grisons, Switzerland

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The Secretary of the SAHS, Dr. Augustin Maissen, has sent us a copy of " Studia Raetoromanica I", Ediziums Della Revista Retoromontscha. 1965 (Editor: Alfons Maissen, Chur). It consists of a study by Augustin Maissen on "L' Americanisaziun dils nums de schlatteina romontschs e grischuns" with an Abstract in English (19) pages. It is astonishing how many Bundner names, some of them extinct in Grabunden, have been preserved in the U.S., either in the original or in a somewhat anglicized form. There are even Romansh sepulchral inscriptions, e.g. at Badus (Romansh geographic name!) in South Dakota.

Romansh Poetry, L. B. Jul 1965

Romansh Poetry, L. B.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In 1958, together with his friend Robert Billigmeier, Dr. Augustin Maissen has edited the booklet "Contemporary Romansh Poetry. An Anthology of Contemporary Poetry written in the Romansh Language of Switzerland, with Bilingual Text, including an Introduction and Biographical Notes", published by the Romansh-American Foundation and printed by Editorial 'Cantera', Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico (48 pages). This charming presentation of Romansh culture is an excellent introduction into the fourth Swiss national language because it appeals to a feeling for beauty which is universal. The poem "Il pur suveran" ("The Sovereign Peasant") by Anton Huonder (1824-1872), one of the early pioneers of the …

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin Jan 1965

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. A geographic study of this area in 1869 focuses attention on the nature of the Mormon civilization and more fully illuminates the effect of …

The Political Thought And Activity Of Heber J. Grant, Seventh President Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Loman Franklin Aydelotte Jan 1965

The Political Thought And Activity Of Heber J. Grant, Seventh President Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Loman Franklin Aydelotte

Theses and Dissertations

Heber J. Grant reflected, both consciously and unconsciously, a Mormon agrarian background and ideology. His moral fervor and idealism was in the tradition of his father, Jedediah Morgan Grant, the leading figure of the 1856 "Mormon Reformation." Grant's belief in self-sufficiency, thrift, solvency, and laissez faire government reflected the frontier environment and his business training; however, the dominant force of his life was the principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially after he was appointed an Apostle and later President of that organization. His outstanding traits were his straight-forward outspokenness and his persistence which largely explain …

Polygamy In Utah And Surrounding Area Since The Manifesto Of 1890, Jerold A. Hilton Jan 1965

Polygamy In Utah And Surrounding Area Since The Manifesto Of 1890, Jerold A. Hilton

Theses and Dissertations

I selected this topic in 1962 primarily from curiosity to discover the facts concerning present day polygamy in Utah, allegedly still abundant. Perhaps the motivation may be described as an amateur detective's zeal. Considerable material seemed to be available about polygamy in Utah before 1890, when the practice was mostly abandoned by the Mormon people, but, apparently, little has been written on this subject covering the period since that date. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to cover polygamy in Utah and close proximity from 1890 to the present (1965). Its scope includes: first, continued plural marriages for two …

An Analysis Of The Accounts Relating Joseph Smith's Early Visions, Paul R. Cheesman Jan 1965

An Analysis Of The Accounts Relating Joseph Smith's Early Visions, Paul R. Cheesman

Theses and Dissertations

Joseph Smith, prophet and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated that when he was fourteen years old he had received a visitation from two members of the Godhead: the Father and the Son. He was alone when he went into the woods to pray, and was therefore the only witness to the manifestation of these personages. He also declared that when he was seventeen years old he was visited by an angel named Moroni. Again he was without witnesses. For a first-hand account of these two experiences we must rely on a single source, Joseph …

Theses and Dissertations

Isaac Morley was born in 1786, in the Atlantic seaboard city of Salem, Massachusetts. He received the common school education provided by the New England Schools. When the time came for his marriage, he was founded in a trade and was a mature man. Like his father, Isaac learned the trade of cooper and wheelwright, learned to plant and sow, to reap a harvest, and to care for cattle and sheep.

He served his country with the Ohio Militia in the War of 1812. In 1830 he heard Mormon elders preach the gospel for the first time. He was convinced …

A Study To Determine What Caused Students To Discontinue Attending The Burley Seminary Before Obtaining A Fourth-Year Certificate 1961-1965, Charles Durrell Salisbury Jan 1965

A Study To Determine What Caused Students To Discontinue Attending The Burley Seminary Before Obtaining A Fourth-Year Certificate 1961-1965, Charles Durrell Salisbury

Theses and Dissertations

It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Of the 92 students who discontinued seminary and received questionnaires, 66 (70 per cent) were …
