Montaigne's "De L'Amitié" And The Problem Of Communication, Camilla J. Nilles
Montaigne's "De L'Amitié" And The Problem Of Communication, Camilla J. Nilles
Quidditas
In the world of change and becoming revealed by Montaigne's Essais, his friendship with La Boétie stands out as an island of firmness and stability. Montaigne never questions the perfection of their relationship, nor have his readers doubted Montaigne's sincerity. They have taken Montaigne at his word in part because so little is actually known about the two friends' relations, but primarily because La Boétie's friendship is not nearly as important to Montaigne studies as La Boétie's death.

Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr
Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr
Quidditas
The struggle between Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Lombard League illustrates conflicts between not only imperial and municipal ambitions but also regalian and customary rights. The ability of the emperor to assert and to profit from regalian rights reflected the efficacy of imperial power. Conversely, the power of the Lombard city-states lay in the recognition of the validity of customary rights. While this conflict centers on the differing principles of Roman and "Germanic" law, the present study argues that the purported devotion of Barbarossa to Roman law and of the Italian communes to customary law misrepresents their positions. The Lombards' …
Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey
Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey
Quidditas
The rhetorical formulae that permeate the poetry of the Middle Ages are not always used in a conventional or consistent manner. On the fringes of the main literary movements are works that raise doubts as to the very nature of medieval poetics. Some texts challenge accepted criteria with respect to genre, tone, or interpretation; others appear unfamiliar and heterogeneous in comparison with accepted poetic concepts; still others use the language and imagery of established poetics as a polemic strategy. Such problematic texts are found among the lyric poems composed in England during the Anglo-Norman era, particularly among the macaronics. These …

Sir Thomas Heneage Of Hainton: A Henrician Gentleman, Narasingha P. Sil
Sir Thomas Heneage Of Hainton: A Henrician Gentleman, Narasingha P. Sil
Quidditas
The obscurity of Sir Thomas Heneage (c. 1480-1553) in early Tudor history presents a sharp contrast to the relative prominence of his nephew and namesake who served Queen Elizabeth as the vice-chamberlain of her household. Sir Thomas Heneage the Younger (c. 1532-1595), who left a fuller record of his activities, has naturally been given a more extensive treatment in the Dictionary of National Biography, which devotes less than half a column to the senior Heneage. The uncle can further boast of one printed page in Rev. Mr. Oates's account of the Heneage family. One of his letters was published …

Emergence From The Dark: Female Epistolary Literature In The Middle Ages, Albrecht Classen
Emergence From The Dark: Female Epistolary Literature In The Middle Ages, Albrecht Classen
Quidditas
German medieval literary scholarship has always been dominated by male-oriented views, since research in this field has been traditionally carried out by men. Because of this, the role of women in medieval literature has been of only marginal interest to most scholars. Recent publications, however, have changed this situation, since an increasing number of women scholars have not only acquired a profile in medieval literary research but have also focused particularly on the life and culture of women in the Middle Ages. Thus the image of the medieval woman is slowly emerging from the dark, although most of our knowledge …
Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli
Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli
Quidditas
The merit of the Middle English alliterative poems Richard the Redelesss and Mum and the Sothsegger can be judged accurately only if they are approached as individual compositions. Ever since the Early English Text Society published the Mabel Day and Robert Steele edition of Mum and the Sothsegger in 1936, most scholars have uncritically accepted the single-poem theory these editors posited, regardless of how this adversely affected their analyses of the works. The argument for regarding Richard and Mum as fragments of one composition, begun in 1299 and finished sometime between 1403 and 1406, is, however, far less conclusive than …
