Private Edward Martin Roberts fought – and was wounded – in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Less than three years later, Edward had died and was subsequently buried in London, Ontario’s Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Edward's headstone, however, is unique as many of the soldiers who were buried in London never served overseas. Beginning with his pre-war life, this biography attempts to trace Edward’s experiences before, during, and after the First World War. Edward’s life and military service connects to many broader historical and historiographical trends, such as contemporary demographics, source uncertainty, the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and medical developments during …

Negotiations Of Empire: Rooting Out The American Citizenry In The Borderlands Of Upper Canada, 1805-1820, Emma C. Grant

This research examines the negotiations that transpired between the people, the British imperial government, and the land within the Detroit River borderlands between 1805 to 1820. This work marries borderlands and imperial interpretations and forms a cohesive foundation for analysis, which interprets empire as a framework through which the people of this region maneuvered. Reciprocally, within this negotiated process the people themselves become a mechanism of empire. Therefore, this work amends a historiographical gap within the Detroit-Essex borderlands that often divides imperial and cultural methods. Focusing primarily on the years surrounding the War of 1812, this work draws nuanced connections …

This paper discusses the Kutau martial arts ritual practiced by the people of Suro Village, Muara Beliti District, Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatra Province. Kutau is one of the ancestral heritages consisting of a set of rituals. Kutau takes the form of traditional martial arts that has been developed by the Suro Village community. Applying the qualitative approach, this study aimed to systematically document all forms of rituals in Kutau and its functions within the Suro community. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, which were then analyzed using Victor Turner’s ritual approach and Talcot Parsons’ function approach. Results …
