Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Two letters appeared in the Lutheran and Missionary in the late summer of 1864 signed, "M.L.S."
The summer session had ended at Pennsylvania College. The campus was quiet, the classrooms were empty. For professors at the college, the brief breaks between semesters were a much-needed respite from the daily grind of professorial life. Any sane professor would use the few brief moments to unwind. Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Sometimes you stumble on something on eBay you just can't pass up. It's that $6 buy that is awkward, odd and just a little out of your scope. But it's only $6. If you'd buy a burger for $6, you shouldn't pass up an original letter from 1835.
Every letter has a story. And each of those stories has its own drama, its own meaning, its own power. The mundanities of human life can be just as powerful as the battles and charges. [excerpt]

A Letter Of Johann Grob Of St. Imier To His Parents, Written In Jersey City On June 10, 1866, Johann Grob
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Ms. Elisabeth Fowler of Oak Park, Illinois, found Johann Grob's letter among her family papers. "I have never heard how we got the copy over here," she wrote, "but we did have a cousin (in my father's generation or maybe a bit older) who used to go back and forth to Switzerland." Although it is not known who has translated the 3 document nor where the original might be, the letter sounds authentic and reports valuable details about Grob's ocean crossing and his first weeks in the United States.

The Rise Of The Short Story In American Letters, Mary M. Barra
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
Like all other nations America too has had her birth in the literally world. Her beginning has not been less forceful than other nations. We find that English literature, undivided in the past, at the end of the nineteenth century has four divisions: British, American, Canadian, and Australian. The British is still the most important since it has the greatest literary background. But the steadily growing American literature ranks second to it. We glory in this heritage as much as the British because we feel that it belongs to us as well, and prize this tremendous possession
