Taos Indians And The Blue Lake Controversy, Ronald P. Archibeck Dec 1971

Taos Indians And The Blue Lake Controversy, Ronald P. Archibeck

History ETDs

This paper shall concern itself with the sixty-four year controversy between the Taos Pueblo Indians and the United States Forest Service over the question of who should control the Blue Lake area in northern New Mexico.

To the Taos Indians, Blue Lake was their most sacred religious shrine -- the place or their emergence and re-entry into the earth after death. Also of importance because of numerous religious shrines were the 48,000 acres of wilderness watershed land adjoining the lake known as the Blue Lake area. The Indians had to convince Washington of this religious importance -- it was only …

Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day Dec 1971

Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day

Honors Theses

After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the appearance of Europe was changed almost to that of the eighteenth century. France had been returned to her old borders, the multitude of little kingdoms in Italy and Germany had been reinstated, and Russia had taken back the portion of Poland that she had acquired in 1793. The general alliance of all European countries against a superior France was discontinued as soon as France had lost that position. It had been nothing more than one of the agreements that European countries made when they were under pressure. The enemy was only the …

The Reaction To Enclosure In Tudor Policy And Thought, Kenneth Michael Kines Dec 1971

The Reaction To Enclosure In Tudor Policy And Thought, Kenneth Michael Kines

Master's Theses

The original idea for this thesis in British Agrarian History evolved when it was discovered how much attention has been given to interpreting primary source material, and how little attention has been given to the primary sources themselves The student in Britain must find the task of research somewhat simple, for within the bounds of London can be found most of the necessary records, letters and statutes. The student confined to the United States must rely heavily upon printed sources. This paper is intended to serve as a guide to and study of major enclosure writings, speeches and policies that …

The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry Dec 1971

The History Of The Stream Preservation Movement In Arkansas, Rex Moreland Terry

Honors Theses

The history of Arkansas' Stream Preservation movement is not a long one, because only in the recent past have Arkansans taken a serious look at the long term effects of such things as damming streams and clearing land.

The core of the movement for stream preservation centers around the Buffalo River, in the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks. Because of this, the bulk of this paper will be devoted to the Buffalo.

Spain And Dos De Mayo, John P. Lewis Nov 1971

Spain And Dos De Mayo, John P. Lewis

History ETDs

The principles of the Ancien Regime were inappropriate by 1800, yet Charles IV of Spain and his adviser, Manuel Godoy, protracted the existence of such methods of misgovernment until the forced abdication in 1808. As most countries pressed forward with the assistance of the developing industrial revolution, Spain remained a retarded land with an unproductive nobility, an all powerful mesta, a tiny middle class, and a shackled peasantry. The government was no more advanced since it was comprised of the absolute sovereign at the apex of the social triangle and the military establishment under the captain-general. Conditions for revolution were …

The Indiana Congressional Delegation And Foreign Policy Issues 1939-1941, Loretta S. Glaze Nov 1971

The Indiana Congressional Delegation And Foreign Policy Issues 1939-1941, Loretta S. Glaze

Graduate Thesis Collection

This paper is an examination of the foreign policy attitudes of Indiana's United States Senators and Representatives during the critical years before the Second World War. My purpose is to determine whether these particular Mid-Westerners were a part of the isolationist bloc in Congress which exerted a significant influence on the formulation of foreign policy. The scope of the study is limited to an elucidation of the individual views as expressed in Congress b the members of the delegation and an analysis of the campaign for re-election waged by each of them as it relates to the broader issue.

Hortensienstrasse 50. The Kreisau Circle And The 20th Of July, Thomas Childers

Masters Theses

The Kreisau Circle of the German resistance movement to National Socialism was first organized by Count Helmuth James von Moltke and Count Peter Yorck von Wartenburg in 1940. The circle's membership was composed of socialists, representatives of the Christian Churches, members of the Foreign Office and governmental administration, and East Elbian aristocrats. Until May 1943 the circle concentrated primarily on the formulation of a plan for the reconstruction of German society in a post-Nazi Europe. In drafting the program, three large conferences were held ay Moltke's estate of Kreisau in Silesia, from which the circle derived its name.

The Highly Personal Dispute Between Alexander Hamilton And Thomas Jefferson: The Confrontation Over Domestic Issues In Washngton's First Cabinet, Scott F. Hyland

All Master's Theses

The intended result of this study is a presentation of the force of personality as the chief explanatory factor in the dispute between Hamilton and Jefferson, and as chief factor in Washington's role as unwilling catalyst. The boundaries will be the historical discipline, utilizing the more measurable psychological insights as given above. The result will hopefully be an insightful connection between personality, behavior, and history.

History And Development Of National Park Legislation In Mexico 1917-1961, István György Maurer Jul 1971

History And Development Of National Park Legislation In Mexico 1917-1961, István György Maurer

History ETDs

The destruction of man's habitat is an age-old pattern as illustrated by examples from Asia, Africa and America. Equally old are attempts to save certain parts of the environment. The United States pioneered a new method in nature preservation with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872. Since that time national parks have become a worldwide phenomenon. Mexico, whose geography contains many areas of national park caliber, was an early participant in this movement. The grandeur of the Mexican landscape has been admired by travelers since Cortez. The country's climate and physiography combined to produce a variety of areas, …

The Southern Planter, 1841-1861, Frederick Francis Carr Jr. Jul 1971

The Southern Planter, 1841-1861, Frederick Francis Carr Jr.

Master's Theses

The Southern Planter, established in Richmond, Virginia, in 1841, was an influential agricultural journal in the years preceding the Civil War. It is now the oldest farm magazine still in continuous publication. In the years before the war there were several owners, editors, and publishers, with the attendant subscription and financial problems of a new editorial venture. Southern Planter grew in size and in influence and mirrored the agricultural changes of its region.

The Civil Rights Position Of Hugh D. Scott In Congress, 1941-1965, Michael Merle Fehl Jul 1971

The Civil Rights Position Of Hugh D. Scott In Congress, 1941-1965, Michael Merle Fehl

Master's Theses

This paper is a study of Pennsylvania's Senator Hugh Doggett Scott's position on civil rights as a member of the House of representatives (1941-1957) and the Senate (1958-1965). The purpose of this study is to show that Senator Scott throughout his House and Senate career played an active role in helping pass major civil rights legislation. The civil rights gain during this period of time are often credited only to liberal Democrats. However, Senator Scott and a few of his fellow Republicans also played an important role in seeing these gains come true.

Harry F. Byrd And The Democratic Presidential Nomination Of 1932 : Party Politics And The Byrd Campaign, Tyson Van Auken

Master's Theses

The topical order of the thesis was selected to give the clearest portrayal of Harry Byrd's role in Democratic politics for the period immediately preceding the Democratic presidential nomination of 1932. The first chapter of the thesis explains some of the background of Byrd's political position in Virginia and the national Democratic party. The pre-convention maneuvers of Byrd in the national party are the subject of the second chapter. The third chapter is an analysis of Byrd's own campaign for the presidential nomination in 1932. In the fourth chapter, the activities of the Byrd forces at the Democratic National Convention …

On Human, Economic, Natural Resources For The State Of Utah From 1870- 1910 From U.S. Census Reports, Daniel J. Ringle

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Many have called attention to the wealth of historical data buried in the decennial compilations of census reports conducted by the United States government since 1790. Many distinguished studies have been made utilizing these data . Surely a concentrated study of the reports for a limited area over a span of time will yield either new insights or verifications for established views. The purpose of this report is to provide a general summary of and analysis of the human, economic, and natural resources of Utah from 1870 to 1910, based on the data of the United States census reports.

Many …

The Effects Of Huguenot Settlements Upon The French Colonial Empire, Daniel J. Ringle May 1971

The Effects Of Huguenot Settlements Upon The French Colonial Empire, Daniel J. Ringle

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Considering this paper for a Seminar in Early Colonial History, became particularly interested in the French colonization efforts in the New World. My interest stems from the fact that I am a teacher of American History in the Public School system of the State of Utah. Due to the meager information contained in the textbooks used, most Americans know very little about the beginning of the French settlements and their impact upon the French Colonial Empire. Americans have heard of the French cities of Quebec, Montreal, New Orleans, and some others. They are aware that on the plains of Abraham …

The Cultural Programs Of The Wpa: With Special Emphasis On The Federal Art Project, Lawrence G. Lashbrook May 1971

The Cultural Programs Of The Wpa: With Special Emphasis On The Federal Art Project, Lawrence G. Lashbrook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The number of Americans who did not suffer in some way from the depression of the thirties was small, indeed. This was a period of great travail for the United States and the entire world. However, it was also one of the most interesting and innovative periods in American history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt exhibited forceful and quick reactions to the economic and social problems besetting the nation. Not the least of these measures of mitigation was the Works Projects Administration and the inclusive WPA cultural projects. These projects contained an art program, a writers' program, a theatre program and …

The U.S. Policy In Vietnam, As It Relates To The Geneva And S.E.A.T.O. Agreements, Bobby Shepherd May 1971

The U.S. Policy In Vietnam, As It Relates To The Geneva And S.E.A.T.O. Agreements, Bobby Shepherd

Honors Theses

Few chapters in American history have been filled with more importance and had more impact upon this nation politically, socially and morally than has the era of active involvement in the land war in Vietnam, during the mid 1960's. The war has taken almost 50,000 American lives, has contributed directly to the political end of one American President and had plunged the United States into an ordeal of examination and internal turmoil rarely seen in U.S. history.

As great as the impact of this war has been, it is remarkable that little is recalled by American citizens or acknowledged by …

The Early Beats: Humanity And Machinery, James A. Winders May 1971

The Early Beats: Humanity And Machinery, James A. Winders

Honors Theses

The beatnik has been a favorite character in American films and television in recent years. Somewhere in the lost shuffle of Jerry Lewis movies is found a scene containing typical Hollywood treatment of the bohemian of the 1950's. A "square," i.e., a "normal" person, finds himself in a smoky tomb-like cafe featuring the props necessary to represent a "beatnik scene:" expresso coffee, unwashed, bearded men wearing sweatshirts, dungarees, and sneakers accompanied by classic beatnik "chicks" (female bohemians) with long, straight hair, an abundance of dark eye shadow, perhaps sunglasses, and, of course, they are clad entirely in black. Without fail, …

J. Sidney Peters And Virginia Prohibition, 1916-1920, Hugh Harrington Fraser

Master's Theses

This study will seek to reveal the reasons for both the success ad failure of Virginia prohibition in its early years. The focus will be on the Department of Prohibition and its controversial, first commissioner, J. Sidney Peters, from 1916 to 1920. These years saw the shift to either grudging or enthusiastic acceptance of. prohibit ion by many of its former foes, and then a shift in increasing numbers to disillusioned hostility, directed mainly against the Commissioner and his Department.

A History Of Company C 156th Signal Battalion (Combat Area) Michigan Army National Guard In The Berlin Crisis 1961-62, Warren J. Lawrence

Masters Theses

The 1961 mobilization of United States Military Reserve Components for the Berlin Crisis has several unique aspects. One perspective of examining the mobilization is to view it through the successes and problems of one of the individual company-size units called to service. The unit discussed here is company C, 156th Signal Battalion (CA), Michigan Army National Guard, located in Kalamazoo, MI.

The paper begins with a brief history of Company C from its conception in 1859 to the Berlin Crises Mobilization in 1961. The mobilization itself and what happened to Company C during 1961 and 1962 is covered in a …

The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning Apr 1971

The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to trace the quick rise and

equally sudden fall of the Virginia State Farmers' Alliance. Emphasis

was given to the unique socio-economic conditions prevalent in Southern

Virginia during the latter part of the nineteenth century which forced

individual farmers into cooperation, and to the vacillating political

situation which precipitated the death of the Virginia Farmers' Alliance.

The structures and activities of the Alliance received particular attention

because they were extremely important in attracting and maintaining

membership.

A Study Of United States-Chilean Relations, 1913 To 1918, Charles Dimke Mar 1971

A Study Of United States-Chilean Relations, 1913 To 1918, Charles Dimke

History ETDs

This thesis is an analysis of United States-Chilean relations, 1913 to 1918. Diplomatic contacts between the two powers provide an opportunity to investigate the impact of North America upon Chilean policy. Specifically, President Wilson's concept of Pan-Americanism contained in the 1913 to 1917 Pan-American Pact and negotiations concerning Chilean neutrality during the First World War emerge as focal points of this study.

United States diplomatic and economic intervention in Latin America resulted in an era of lingering Chilean doubt over Washington's intentions in the Southern Hemisphere. President Wilson was therefore faced with continued Chilean distrust and opposition early in his …

The New Deal In New Mexico; Changes In State Government And Politics 1926-1938., William Hickman Pickens

History ETDs

This Thesis analyzes the impact of the Nineteen Thirties on New Mexico's economy and society with particular emphasis on changes in politics and state government occasioned by the Great Depression and the New Deal. After a background of New Mexico from 1912 to 1930, the old style of politics is closely examined. Governor Richard Dillon's administration (1926-1930) is selected as characteristic of the pre-Depression brand of public service. Politics, the roles of Governor and Legislature, and five state bureaus are all described in detail. These areas are then traced through 1938 and the assertion is made that they experienced two …
