Scranton, Pennsylvania was home to early industry crucial to early American development. Early settlements turned to booming businesses as locals took advantage of local coal and iron deposits to build the rail industry. This growth, furthered by the geographic advantages of the city, made Scranton the perfect place for a new business venture. In 1891, the English Nottingham Lace Firm was looking to expand business, eventually settling on Northeastern Pennsylvania. Although the company saw some difficulties at its inception, it soon became the largest global producer of Nottingham lace in the world. Students will read newspaper articles and pamphlet excerpts to understand how the railroads affected industry and settlement across the state. A list of various activities related to original primary and secondary resources allows teacher the flexibility to choose parts of this lesson plan to use and adapt to various types of students.

This collection consists of typescript articles on letterhead titled The Week: An Industrial, Financial, and Agricultural Review. The articles cover topics related to public utilities (especially rural electrification), agricultural diversification and reform, economic development in Georgia, and the work of the Utilities Information Committee of Georgia, an alliance between businessmen and landowners formed in 1919 to promote economic development. Most of the articles are undated but content indicates that they were written from 1926 through 1928.

This letter dated March 5, 1958, from United States (US) Senator William Langer to Three Affiliated Tribes tribal member Martin Cross, is in regards to US Senate Bill 809 (S. 809) which is likely a reference to US Senate Bill 85-809 entitled, "To Provide Economic Assistance to the American Indians," sponsored by Sen. Langer. Langer informs Cross that S. 809 is not "dead." Langer makes some comments on the bill and asks Cross for his opinion on it.
There are some handwritten notes on the letter.
S. 809 did not become US public law.

George W. Randolph, Confederate Secretary Of War, Writes To An Unidentifed Cotton Manufacturer, June 1862., George Wythe Randolph

Randolph writes to an unidentified cottton manufacturer that he has been informed that "exhorbitant" prices are being charged for certain goods. Randolph also requests that his correspondent reply to him what quantity and what price such goods can be furnished at the time of writing and over the subsequent 30, 60, and 90 days at various points throughout the Southern rail system. Randolph further adds that "cotton manufacturers must not ex[ect to sell their goods at unreasonable prices[....]while other classes are suffering[.]"
