"Barbara Stanwyck, an intrepid citizen who has shown no fear of man, terrain, or scripts over a long and illustrious career, is tackling all three in Cattle Queen of Montana," reported the New York Times when the film opened in that city in 1954.1 Thirty years into her movie career, Stanwyck indeed had demonstrated her ability in more than eighty roles by the late 1950s. This article presents a detailed look at an individual Jew's contributions to Brownsville and the adjacent border area. It illustrates the need for more local studies of a biographical nature to add to our knowledge of Jewish Texans. Research into related topics, such as the role of lay rabbis in maintaining Jewish religious life in other small towns in the Southwest and the degree to which Jewish immigrants entered the mainstream of community life in America, is also needed.

This comprehensive examination of Spanish, Mexican, and United States land tenure systems in New Mexico's Rio Arriba is based on the discipline of geography Alvar Carlson undertakes his journey into land grant history in order to ex- amine cultural and environmental changes visible in the region after some 400 years of history. He finds that land grant history is certainly in need of revision as he focuses upon the incorporation of subsistence agriculture and land use pat- terns in Rio Arriba.
