British-Romanian Relations During The Cold War, Mihaela Sitariu
British-Romanian Relations During The Cold War, Mihaela Sitariu
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In the aftermath of the Second World War British-Romanian relations were strained, marked by accusations of espionage directed towards Britain’s diplomats and requests for recalls. The British Government reacted moderately to these, acquiescing to recall their diplomats but refusing to concede to the Romanians when it came to their ‘flimsy’ accusations. Negotiation was preferred to reprisals especially when certain Britons had to be rescued from the Communists’ hands. In one respect Britain was not that indulgent: when money was involved, particularly the assets of oil companies nationalized in 1948.
Trade remained a priority for both the British and Romanian governments. …
The Vancouver Asahi Baseball Team And Cultural Acceptance 1920-1941, Christopher M. Pellerin
The Vancouver Asahi Baseball Team And Cultural Acceptance 1920-1941, Christopher M. Pellerin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis analyzed how the Vancouver Asahis, through excellence in baseball, gained acceptance within the newspaper media and community from 1920 to 1941. An examination of Vancouver’s history and culture determined the importance of baseball to the city, especially upon Bob Brown’s, Vancouver’s greatest builder of the game, immigration. A history of the Asahis was also examined to help frame baseball’s importance to the Japanese and why they wished to engage in this specific sport. Through a content analysis within the Vancouver Sun and Daily Province newspapers, this thesis examined how the Asahis were represented in each of the two …
Talking Nonsense: Spiritual Mediums And Female Subjectivity In Victorian And Edwardian Canada, Claudie Massicotte
Talking Nonsense: Spiritual Mediums And Female Subjectivity In Victorian And Edwardian Canada, Claudie Massicotte
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study traces the development of mediumship in Canada in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Especially popular among women, this practice offered them an important space of expression. Concealing their own identities under spiritual possession, mediums ubiquitously invoked well-known historical figures in séances to transmit their opinions on current issues. As such, they were able to promote new ideas to interested audiences without claiming responsibility for their potentially controversial words.
While many studies have been conducted in the United States, Britain, and France regarding the significant role of mediumship in the emergence of women on the political scene, …
What Canada Read/Red: A Content Media Analysis Of The Montreal Olympic Games And The Soviet Union As Reported In The Montreal Gazette And The Globe And Mail, Joshua F. Archer
What Canada Read/Red: A Content Media Analysis Of The Montreal Olympic Games And The Soviet Union As Reported In The Montreal Gazette And The Globe And Mail, Joshua F. Archer
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study describes the media coverage of the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic Games. Two newspapers were used for the data collection: the Montreal Gazette and The Globe and Mail. A systematic, descriptive content analysis of the Olympic Games news coverage was completed using 966 articles. Five categories were constructed for the quantitative analysis: general themes, change over time, sport, gender, and national representation. Based on the findings from the quantitative analysis, a qualitative analysis that examined the way in which the Soviet Union was represented in both newspapers was completed. Three dominant constructions were found, including sport dominance, political …
Strata, Soma, Psyche: Narrative And The Imagination In The Nineteenth-Century Science Of Lyell, Darwin, And Freud, Pascale M. Manning
Strata, Soma, Psyche: Narrative And The Imagination In The Nineteenth-Century Science Of Lyell, Darwin, And Freud, Pascale M. Manning
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My dissertation, “Strata, Soma, Psyche: Narrative and the Imagination in the Nineteenth-Century Science of Lyell, Darwin, and Freud,” contributes new research to the diverse field mapping the intersections of science and literature in the nineteenth century. Although scholars such as Gillian Beer and George Levine have established ties between developments in the natural sciences and the scope of the nineteenth-century novel, there has not been a sustained effort to attend to the narrative structures of the primary texts that most influenced coterminous literary movements of the period. My work thus attends closely to the narrative and imaginative form of scientific …
Play In The Land Of Footnotes: Hipótesis De Un Diálogo (In)Estable Con El Pasado, Miharu Miyasaka
Play In The Land Of Footnotes: Hipótesis De Un Diálogo (In)Estable Con El Pasado, Miharu Miyasaka

Mobilizing Insurgent Pasts Toward Decolonial Futures, Patrick Crowley
Mobilizing Insurgent Pasts Toward Decolonial Futures, Patrick Crowley
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This project is an inquiry into modes of decolonial resistance that mobilize alternative relationships to the past against the modern/colonial writing of history from a Eurocentric perspective taken as universal. I contend that knowledges and memories rooted in non-Western cultural traditions have formed the epistemological basis for ongoing opposition to the hegemonic conception of history as the unfolding of global structural transformations on a single, homogenous timescale. I examine works by Frantz Fanon, Dipesh Chakrabarty, and Zapatista videomakers that expressly reject a Eurocentric, monotopic perspective of history. My objective is to demonstrate the decolonial efforts of intellectuals and ordinary people …
The Legacy Of Military Necessity In Italy: War And Memory In Cassino And Monte Sole, Cynthia D. Brown
The Legacy Of Military Necessity In Italy: War And Memory In Cassino And Monte Sole, Cynthia D. Brown
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The rise of Benito Mussolini’s Fascist party and its disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany remains one of the most well-known parts of Italy’s Second World War experience, at least in English historical literature. The war did not end when the Italians surrendered to the Allies in September 1943. Military histories of what followed focus on the bitter campaign waged between the Germans and the Allies on the Italian peninsula. Much less is known about the impact of war on the Italian nation and its civilians.
From the Italian perspective, the war was a defining yet difficult period that remains controversial …
Torah In The Diaspora: A Comparative Study Of Philo And 4 Maccabees, Christopher J. Cornthwaite
Torah In The Diaspora: A Comparative Study Of Philo And 4 Maccabees, Christopher J. Cornthwaite
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis examines how Judaism was Hellenized by comparing how difference, boundaries, and syncretism function in both Philo and 4 Maccabees. Recent historical and anthropological methods demand rejection of old approaches to these works which differentiated between the Judaism and the Hellenism in them and were often dominated by attempts to show where these authors’ intellectual fidelities lay. By re-evaluating ideas of boundaries and identity, this thesis argues that these authors could be committed to the ends of both Judaism and Hellenism. This necessitates recognition that identity and boundaries are ultimately products of individual self-consciousness; these authors attempt to understand …
Brave New Wireless World: Mapping The Rise Of Ubiquitous Connectivity From Myth To Market, Vincent R. Manzerolle
Brave New Wireless World: Mapping The Rise Of Ubiquitous Connectivity From Myth To Market, Vincent R. Manzerolle
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation offers a critical and historical analysis of the myth of ubiquitous connectivity—a myth widely associated with the technological capabilities offered by “always on” Internet-enabled mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. This myth proclaims that work and social life are optimized, made more flexible, manageable, and productive, through the use of these devices and their related services. The prevalence of this myth—whether articulated as commercial strategy, organizational goal, or mode of social mediation—offers repeated claims that the experience and organization of daily life has passed a technological threshold. Its proponents champion the virtues of the invisible “last mile” tethering …
"Smile And Carry On:" Canadian Cavalry On The Western Front, 1914-1918, Stephanie E. Potter
"Smile And Carry On:" Canadian Cavalry On The Western Front, 1914-1918, Stephanie E. Potter
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Although the First World War has been characterized as a formative event in Canadian History, little attention has been paid to a neglected and often forgotten arm of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the Cavalry. The vast majority of Great War historians have ignored the presence of mounted troops on the Western Front, or have written off the entire cavalry arm with a single word – ‘obsolete.’ However, the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and the Canadian Light Horse remained on the Western Front throughout the Great War because cavalry still had a role to play in modern warfare.
This thesis addresses the …
