Romans, Barbarians, And Franks In The Writings Of Venantius Fortunatus, Erica Buchberger

This paper aims to contribute to the broader discussion of strategies of identification and of Romanness by exploring the changing meaning of Roman, barbarian, and Frankish identity in the writings of Venantius Fortunatus. A close examination of the cultural, ethnic and political nuances of these terms in Fortunatus's works highlights the ways he used the resources available to him within his social context to promote Roman identity as still prestigious and as compatible with a barbarian‐ruled society.

Well written and persuasive, Jason Ruiz gives readers a beautiful book on Americans’ literal and figurative image of Mexico under and immediately after Dıaz. A history of pictures rather than a pictorial history, Americans in the Treasure House has great depth and will be useful to scholars of U.S.–Mexican relations, travel, and the gendered politics of empire.

The article offers brief profile of Professor David Montejano who became the first Latino to receive Frederick Jackson Turner Award of the Organization of American Historians in 1988. Topics discussed include his education from Central Catholic High School and enrolled at Texas State University, his learning occurred outside the classroom because of the broad diversity in the Northeast population and his books such as "Quixote Soldiers: A Local History of the Chicano Movement, 1966-1981."

Review Of Leaders Of The Mexican American Generation: Biographical Essays Ed. By Anthony Quiroz, Harriett Denise Joseph

Biographies of thirteen major activists of the Mexican American generation, which is defined as “bounded by the years from 1920 to 1965” (xiv), are presented in this anthology that resulted from a symposium commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the American GI Forum. Editor Anthony Quiroz notes that the work is designed not only to provide biographical overviews of these men and women who “shaped the character and identity of this generation” (xiv) but also to place them in their historical context and recognize the significance of their contributions. Overall, the volume meets these objectives.
