Review Of Pernille Flensted-Jensen (Ed.), Further Studies In The Ancient Greek Polis. Historia Einzelschriften 138, Cpcpapers 5., Vanessa B. Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Further Studies in the Ancient Greek Polis is the fifth volume in the series of Papers from the Copenhagen Polis Centre, which monographs, along with six volumes of CPCActs, have served to distribute the continuing conclusions arrived at by the Centre. The reader is expected to know the purpose of these works, as this volume lacks any kind of prefatory explanation for its existence and leaps immediately into the twelve essays of which it is comprised. The reader discovers that the book is actually two works. The seven initial essays treat specific regions within Hellas, often dealing with issues of …

Review Of Die Nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager: Entwicklung Und Struktur, Edited By Ulrich Herbert, Karin Orth, And Christoph Dieckmann, Alan E. Steinweis Dec 2000

Review Of Die Nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager: Entwicklung Und Struktur, Edited By Ulrich Herbert, Karin Orth, And Christoph Dieckmann, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Perhaps more than any other aspect of Nazi rule, the “concentration camp” has symbolized Nazi terror in the popular imagination. The existence of the camps was widely known both inside and outside of Germany during the years of Nazi rule, and their already considerable notoriety was heightened on their liberation by Allied forces. As gruesome images of mass graves and piles of emaciated corpses appeared in newspapers, and as German citizens were forced by occupation authorities to visit the camps and witness the horrific evidence in person, the camps came to epitomize Nazi barbarism. Until today they have remained among …

Lucan’S Epic Aristeia And The Hero Of The Bellum Civile, Vanessa Gorman Dec 2000

Lucan’S Epic Aristeia And The Hero Of The Bellum Civile, Vanessa Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Scelerique nefando nomen erit virtus ("Virtue will be the name given to unspeakable crime," 1.667-68). This rhetorically- charged sententia does more than illustrate Lucan's penchant for impassioned embellishment. It also reflects a sophisticated critical structure that resolves an apparent contradiction of momentous importance in Lucan's poem. On the one hand, Lucan chooses to write on the subject of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, a war that is scelus nefandum: it is more painful, more damaging, and more atrocious than any other Roman battle because it requires the shedding of kindred blood and results in tyranny. On the …

'The Tyrants Around Thoas And Damasenor' (Plut. Q. G. 32.298c-D), Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa B. Gorman Nov 2000

'The Tyrants Around Thoas And Damasenor' (Plut. Q. G. 32.298c-D), Robert J. Gorman, Vanessa B. Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

At Quaestiones Graecae 32.298c-d, Plutarch raises the question, τίνες οι αειναυται παρα Μιλησίοις, ‘Who were the Perpetual Sailors among the Milesians?’; he frames the circumstances of his answer using a genitive absolute clause: των περι Θόαντα και Δαμασήνορα τυράννων καταλυθέντων (‘when the tyrants around Thoas and Damasenor had been overthrown’). In the absence of any other mention of these men in the extent sources, these words--especially the appellation τυράννων --have caused concern among editors and commentators of Plutarch. In the Teubner edition of 1935 Titchener changes τυράννων to the accusative τυράννωυς, while Halliday in his Oxford commentary suggests that …

Review Of The Greek Colonisation Of The Black Sea Area: Historical Interpretation Of Archaeology, Ed. Gocha R. Tsetskhladze, Vanessa B. Gorman Jun 2000

Review Of The Greek Colonisation Of The Black Sea Area: Historical Interpretation Of Archaeology, Ed. Gocha R. Tsetskhladze, Vanessa B. Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The book is a necessary and valuable addition to modern scholarship on the Black Sea region, and every historian of Greek colonization will be pleased to have so much information readily available at last. Yet, as historical interpretation, one would like to see more balance between literary and archaeological evidence or, at the very least, admissions like Lazarov’s (p. 86) about the limits to the archaeological results, especially negative conclusions about dating: just because no remains from before c. 630 have yet been found, one cannot definitively state that the Greeks were not there earlier. Too many of the Archaic …

Basel’S Rural Pastors As Mediators Of Confessional And Social Discipline, Amy Nelson Burnett Feb 2000

Basel’S Rural Pastors As Mediators Of Confessional And Social Discipline, Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of History: Faculty Publications

One aspect of the larger debate on the long-term consequences of the Reformation is the role played by the clergy as mediators of religious and social change. Proponents of confessionalization generally assume that the Protestant and Tridentine Catholic clergy played a prominent role in this process. As representatives of both church and state who lived in daily contact with their parishioners, the pastors were well situated to transmit official norms from those above to those below. As a consequence, the clergy are routinely regarded as willing agents of the secular authority who were largely successful in their efforts to turn …

This State Has "Boundries" (Sic), But No Focus: A Review, Richard Defoe Feb 2000

This State Has "Boundries" (Sic), But No Focus: A Review, Richard Defoe

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Review of Louisiana Biographical Dictionary: People of all Times and Places Who Have Been Important to the History and Life of the State. Somerset Publishers, St. Clair Shores, MI, 1999. $87.50.

Review:

Somerset Publishers produce biographical dictionaries of some of these United States. The Louisiana volume does not instill confidence in their efforts. Sloppy printing, sloppy proof-reading and sloppy and turgid writing are just the beginning of the problems with this book – the title of this review features one of their glaring spelling errors from the foreword.

But the major problem with this book seems to be focus, …

Inside The White House In War Times, William O. Stoddard Feb 2000

Inside The White House In War Times, William O. Stoddard

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Of the three secretaries who assisted President Abraham Lincoln—John G. Nicolay, John Hay, and William O. Stoddard—only Stoddard wrote an extended memoir about his time in the Executive Mansion. First published in 1890, the book vividly depicts the president’s agonizing reaction to the defeats at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, the difficulties encountered (and presented) by Mary Lincoln, the president’s relations with George B. McClellan and other generals, and the anxiety preceding the Merrimack’s epic battle with the Monitor.

In 1866 Stoddard also penned thirteen “White House Sketches” about his time in Lincoln’s service. Originally published in an obscure New York newspaper, …

Review Of A. N. Mclaren, Political Culture In The Reign Of Elizabeth I: Queen And Commonwealth, 1558-1585, Carole Levin Jan 2000

Review Of A. N. Mclaren, Political Culture In The Reign Of Elizabeth I: Queen And Commonwealth, 1558-1585, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

A. N. McLaren's study of political culture in the first part of the reign of Elizabeth is a thoughtful and thoroughly researched study that deals with the connections between ideology and politics, on how concepts of hierarchy, patriarchy, and commonwealth changed in the reign of Elizabeth I. McLaren places her work within a strong historiographical context that particularly follows the scholarship of John Guy and Patrick Collinson while also imposing Anthony Fletcher's "lens of gender." McLaren places the debate on queenship within a broad context and argues that it led not only to the 1601 Essex rebellion but eventually to …
