Honors Theses

There are three directors that have revolutionized the world of French cinema by bringing to the forefront topics that make its audiences uncomfortable. Abdellatif Kechiche, director of the film Black Venus (2010), Ousmane Sembène, director of the film Black Girl (1966), and Céline Sciamma, director of the film Girlhood (2014) have become renowned for discussing the portrayal of black women in French society. This is a topic at hand that reveals the devastating truth behind French society in regarding black women during various eras. Libérte, Egalité, And Fraternité: France, Rwanda, And The Road To Genocide, Rachel Refkin

Honors Theses

The following senior thesis examines France’s political, economic, and military relationship with Rwanda from 1962-present. It analyzes the questionable success of the French humanitarian intervention, dubbed Operation Turquoise, during the Rwandan genocide. Moreover, it explores how the neocolonial relationship between the two countries, and the so-called Françafrique system, while demonstrating the ways in which this relationship juxtaposed certain French notions of libérte, égalité, and fraternité. Une Analyse De L’Idéal De La Négritude À Travers Le Travail Écrit De Léopold Senghor, Anna Mcgillicuddy

The process of colonizing a country is extremely complex. It is a combination of languages, traditions, races, beliefs and experiences. Sometimes the colonization of a country manifests itself in a battle between cultures. I will study the people, the political, economic, educational systems and all the changes in each society to deduce the influence of a different culture. Art and literature are representations, reflections and thoughts of individuals and a society. The French participation in Senegal, which was probably at its peak in the late 1800s to the 1900s, brought new practices, customs and institutions including the French language. The …

Stability And Instability In Former French Colonies: A Case Study Between Gabon And Congo Brazzaville, Abigael Flynn Jun 2014

Stability And Instability In Former French Colonies: A Case Study Between Gabon And Congo Brazzaville, Abigael Flynn

Honors Theses

What has resulted from the instability in Congo Brazzaville and the stability in Gabon is a significant gap in the capacity of statehood between the two former French colonies. Due to the violent struggle for state control within Congo Brazzaville, the state has been unable to deliver basic goods and services to its people. The instability from the violence has inhibited the state’s development due to the constant struggles for power. Furthermore, the fighting has physically damaged Congo Brazzaville’s structure, particularly within the city of Brazzaville (as well as the outlying towns), where most of the fighting occurred. Although most …

Les Catholiques Et Les Huguenots Au Seizième Siècle En France: Un Conflit De Religion Ou Une Lutte Pour Le Pouvoir?, Olga M. Borodulina Jun 2011

Les Catholiques Et Les Huguenots Au Seizième Siècle En France: Un Conflit De Religion Ou Une Lutte Pour Le Pouvoir?, Olga M. Borodulina

Honors Theses

Although the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew and the French Wars of Religion are well-known historical events, there remain some mysteries as what led to such violent tensions between fellow French people. Were religious differences to blame, or was the bloodshed caused by the political intrigues of nobles like Catherine de Medici? Perhaps the economic climate of the age added to the discontent of the common people and the Huguenots were a convenient scapegoat? Then again, it might have been all of those factors and more than led to decades if not centuries of tension in France. This thesis explores the …
