Franco-American Newspapers And Periodicals In The Northeast: An Inventory, Susan Pinette, Jacob Albert
Franco-American Newspapers And Periodicals In The Northeast: An Inventory, Susan Pinette, Jacob Albert
Franco-American Centre Franco-Américain Faculty Scholarship
Franco-American newspapers and periodicals occupy an overlapping space between primary and secondary literature, and their shadow looms large over the collective body of historic Franco-American sources. Their significance to the Franco-American community is hard to overstate. These periodical publications complicate issues of identity in the U.S. Northeast and are an integral part of Québec history itself. This article details current work to inventory newspaper and periodical titles (currently over 400) and makes accessible our collectively built, evolving inventory of Franco-American newspapers. Les journaux et périodiques franco-américains occupent un espace entre la littérature primaire et la littérature secondaire, et leur ombre …
Fighting For Home: Northern New England Women And The Civil War, Savannah A. Clark
Fighting For Home: Northern New England Women And The Civil War, Savannah A. Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the experiences of Northern New England women during the Civil War. Though these women were physically distant from the frontlines, the war came to their doorsteps. The war challenged and changed the physical and idealized space of the household and women’s role within it. This thesis examines how women experienced, resisted, or enacted wartime changes to household space. Through an examination of letters written by women, this study argues that, despite the disruptions of the war and the absence of male family members, Northern New England women fought to protect their homes from change.
Women used a …
Making Vacationland: The Modern Automobility And Tourism Borderlands Of Maine And New Brunswick, 1875-1939, Sean C. Cox
Making Vacationland: The Modern Automobility And Tourism Borderlands Of Maine And New Brunswick, 1875-1939, Sean C. Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Modernizing nineteenth and twentieth century mobility reshaped and re- commodified the predominantly rural environments of Maine and New Brunswick. Landscapes like these can be better understood through the tripartite intersection of environmental commodification as “picturesque,” a democratizing tourism culture, and the development of modern individual mobility. The intersection of these forces produced a unique tourism borderland comprised of primarily second nature landscapes, which rapidly adapted to motor-tourism. All three themes are products of modernity, and their combination in Maine and New Brunswick produced a “tourism borderland” and “mobility borderland” between automotive spaces and the unprepared environments of pre-auto “Vacationland.” Before …
At The Magistrate's Discretion: Sexual Crime And New England Law, 1636-1718, Abby Chandler
At The Magistrate's Discretion: Sexual Crime And New England Law, 1636-1718, Abby Chandler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a comparative study of sexual crime trials in four New England jurisdictions: Essex County, Massachusetts, Plymouth Colony, The Province of Maine, and Rhode Island Colony. It argued that sexual crime trials could be used as a tool for studying the diverse and changing legal cultures of different regions within New England. Whether morality or child support was under discussion, sexual intercourse outside of marriage threatened to disrupt the social and economic bounds of early modern society. Nevertheless, methods for addressing the issue varied widely in New England, depending on the jurisdiction in question. As a result, examining …
The Enigma Of The “Jumping Frenchmen Of Maine”, Stephen R. Whalen, Robert E. Bartholomew
The Enigma Of The “Jumping Frenchmen Of Maine”, Stephen R. Whalen, Robert E. Bartholomew
Maine History
The “Jumping Frenchmen of Maine” exhibited unusual reactions when startled, and they became a component of local folklore in northern New England during the late nineteenth century. Medical scientists of the time examined the condition, but came to no definite conclusions. Modern scientists in the late twentieth century also disagreed on its origins. The syndrome appears to have resulted from the unique social and environmental factors peculiar to the logging camps of the time. Stephen R. Whalen has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Maine. Retired from public school teaching, he is currently a member of the History …

New English Canaan, Thomas Morton
New English Canaan, Thomas Morton
Maine History Documents
In 1883 the Prince Society published in very limited quantity The New English Canaan edited by Charles Francis Adams. Since then there has been no new edition of this informative and entertaining work. Adams held faithfully to the original in spelling, punctuation, and even in the use of the early in the text. His footnotes are learned, copious, and occasionally a bit irrelevant, but a number of mystifying expressions are not explained. It may simply be the short supply and relatively poor readability that have caused modern scholars to deny Morton’s work the attention that it deserves. In this edition …

Historical Floods In New England, M. T. Thomson, William B. Gannon, M. P. Thomas, G. S. Hayes
Maine History Documents
One or more of the great recent New England floods of 1927, 1936, 1938, and 1955 exceeded the greatest known historical floods on most of the major rivers. Locally, on tributary streams, the great floods of recent years probably exceeded historical floods, but the certainty diminishes for the floods that occurred prior to the observance of living witnesses.
This report presents, by year, a condensation of the data on unusual historical floods (floods that occurred before establishment of gaging stations) and the sources of this evidence. This information will be helpful in the determination of the frequency of the highest …
