Harpers Weekly Reports Events Of 1865, Jack L. Dickinson
Manuscripts
Harpers Weekly was the most widely read newspaper of the Civil War period. It featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays, and humor, populated with numerous maps and illustrations. The year 1865 saw the surrender of Robert E. Lee's Army, the end of the Civil War, the assassination of Pres. Abraham Lincoln, the hunt for, trials, and execution of the assassination conspirators, and the sinking of the ship "Sultana" which caused the deaths of 1,700 Union soldiers. It also saw the trial and execution of Capt. William Wirz for Andersonville atrocities, the major fire in Philadelphia, and many other news worthy …
The Politics Of War: The Abrams Doctrine, The War Powers Resolution, And Neoconservatism In The Post-Vietnam Era, Andrew Chase Lore
The Politics Of War: The Abrams Doctrine, The War Powers Resolution, And Neoconservatism In The Post-Vietnam Era, Andrew Chase Lore
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis examines three reactions to the Vietnam War—Neoconservatism, the Abrams Doctrine, and the War Powers Resolution—and argues that those reactions have shaped America‟s foreign policy agenda in the last fifty years. Beginning with the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, exploring the Reagan era and its interventions in Grenada and Latin America, and ending in the mid-1990s, this thesis traces the politics of war in the United States since Vietnam and argues that the culmination of these three reactions during the George H.W. Bush presidency has resulted in the subsequent direction of the country‟s objectives abroad.

The Dawn Of Sowt: Oss Weathermen In The Balkans, 1944, Bryan David Carnes
The Dawn Of Sowt: Oss Weathermen In The Balkans, 1944, Bryan David Carnes
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis will examine the rise of Special Operations Weathermen during World War II, from the founding of the Weather Bureau to the formation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). OSS-weathermen and their contributions played a significant role to the overall Allied victory in all theaters of operation. Concentrating on the first documented use of clandestine weathermen in Yugoslavia, I contend that Special Operations Weather was not only crucial to the war effort, but as a result, revolutionized behind-the-line weather reporting in modern U.S. military. Since meteorological data transcends alliances and nationalities; those who can accurately forecast and observe …

Buffalo Soldier, Deserter, Criminal: The Remarkably Complicated Life Of Charles Ringo, Cicero Fain
History Faculty Research
This case study chronicles the remarkably complicated life of Charles Ringo who served nearly two enlistments as a Buffalo Soldier before deserting and embarking on a life of petty crime. It details his military service, his nomadic occupational life, his marriage, his acquittal of two sets of murders--one of his stepsons in West Virginia, the other of a white married couple in Illinois, and the assistance of white authorities who intervened to save and protect Ringo from the predations of angry mobs and racist courts. It situates Ringo’s exploits within the oppositional/alternative nature of African American working-class life, the failure …
