The Tropics have long been associated with exotic diseases and epidemics. This historical imaginary arose with Aristotle’s notion of the tropics as the ‘torrid zone’, a geographical region virtually uninhabitable to temperate peoples due to the hostility of its climate, and persisted in colonial imaginaries of the tropics as pestilential latitudes requiring slave labour. The tropical sites of colonialism gave rise to urgent studies of tropical diseases which lead to (racialised) changes in urban planning. The Tropics as a region of pandemic, plague and pestilence has been challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The novel coronavirus did not (simply) originate in …

The 'Devès Affair' In Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal: A Critical Assessment Of The Sources, 1902-1911, Kalala J. Ngalamulume
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article examines the validity and reliability of the testimonies and sworn depositions that the Peuvergne administration produced in July 1910 as evidence justifying Justin Devès’s suspension and removal from office as mayor of Saint-Louis, capital of French Senegal. The main argument here is that the “Devès Affair” was based on spurious charges. The article places the conflictin the broader context of the political and economic competition between the French colonial administration and the Bordeaux firms, on the one hand, and the Devès network, on the other.

Interrogating The Historical Revisionism Of The Hungarian Right: The Queer Case Of CéCile Tormay, Anita Kurimay
Interrogating The Historical Revisionism Of The Hungarian Right: The Queer Case Of CéCile Tormay, Anita Kurimay
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
The article examines the historical processes and the motivations of contemporary Hungarian politicians to officially rehabilitate the memory of Cécile Tormay, the internationally acclaimed writer and founder of Hungary’s conservative women’s movement. Through tracing the politics of remembering Tormay since World War II it demonstrates how Tormay’s recent reemergence as a new national icon was intimately tied to a decisive shift in the direction of Hungarian politics from a pro-Western stance to one that is openly hostile towards Western liberalism. Tormay, part of the ruling elite in the authoritarian interwar Horthy regime, was a fierce anticommunist, antisemite, and staunch nationalist …

Celestial Divination And Arabic Science In Twelfth-Century England: The History Of Gerbert Of Aurillac’S Talking Head, Elly Truitt
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
The legend of Gerbert of Aurillac’s oracular head reveals significant information about contemporary medieval attitudes toward foreign knowledge from outside of the Latin Christian West, and in particular about the quadrivium, astral science, and celestial divination. In particular, William of Malmesbury’s account—the most well-known in the medieval period—demonstrates the extent to which scientific knowledge from the Arabic tradition had penetrated the intellectual climate of England in the early twelfth century.

Fictions Of Life And Death: Tomb Automata In Medieval Romance, Elly R. Truitt
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
While automata appear in medieval European textual sources in many different settings, they frequently cluster around tombs, memorials and other places associated with the dead. In several different literary examples, automata expose the unstable definitions of ‘life’ and ‘death’ and reveal contemporary ideas about the complexity and permeability of these categories.

The Virtues Of Balm In Late Medieval Literature, Elly Truitt
The Virtues Of Balm In Late Medieval Literature, Elly Truitt
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article argues that balm, or balsam, was, by the late medieval period, believed to be a panacea, capable of healing wounds and illnesses, and also preventing putrefaction. Natural history and pharmacological texts on balm from the ancient and late antique periods emphasized specific qualities of balm, especially its heat; these were condensed and repeated in medieval encyclopedias. The rarity and cost of balsam, from antiquity through the medieval period, and the high rate of counterfeiting also demonstrate its high demand and significance in medicine and religious ritual. Travel writing and itineraria from the early and central medieval periods added …

Keeping The City Totally Clean: Yellow Fever And The Politics Of Prevention In Colonial Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal, 1850-1914, Kalala J. Ngalamulume
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article explores the ways in which French colonial authorities met the life and death challenge. represented by the re-emergence of yellow fever epidemics in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal at a time when physicians knew very. little about the etiology, diagnosis, transmission and treatment of most infectious and parasitic diseases. The discussion focuses on changing strategies and policies designed to address yellow fever threats, the attitudes and priorities of the authorities, the limits of 'colonial medicine' and the responses of. people affected by sanitary measures. The article argues that because of the ignorance of the etiology and epidemiology of yellow fever, policies were …

The Spanish Attempt To Tribalize The Darién, 1735-50, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz
The Spanish Attempt To Tribalize The Darién, 1735-50, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Spanish officials in eastern Panama believed that Christianized Indians would serve as surrogates for Spanish settlers or troops, and their attempts to administer the region were grounded upon establishing alliances with selected Indian leaders. At the same time, pirates and other intruders also saw the need for alliances with Indian men in order for their endeavors to succeed. Through a process in which Europeans and Indians played an equal part, the early modern period saw the creation of several new indigenous leaders. The chieftains who interacted with outsiders were forced to create new ways of ruling on the ground as …

“Haven’T We Come To Kill The Spaniards?” The Tule Upheaval In Eastern Panama, 1727-1728, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Investigates a Tule Indian uprising that took place in eastern Panama in 1727. The Indians' motivations for this uprising were varied and complicated and not simply the result of the instigations of mestizo pirate Luis García (as was alleged by the governor of Darién and historians, who have read his account of the events). The violence that spread across the isthmus was caused by the instability inherent in the Spanish colonial policy of tribalization. This policy relied on the Spanish authorities' co-opting men who claimed to be tribal leaders. These leaders, however, were unable to contain the Indians once they …
