The Stanford Club Of Switzerland, Kurt A. Widmer

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Founded in September 1963, the Stanford Club of Switzerland is one of the many clubs which, all over the world, bring into contact former students and scholars of Stanford University. In Switzerland, there are at present nearly seventy of them - about half being American, half Swiss - with activities extending from scientific research and work in international organizations to banking and industrial management. A majority of them have joined the Stanford Club of Switzerland and, thanks to it, have made acquaintances which they would otherwise have almost certainly missed making. During its short life, the Club has already organized …

The Swiss Element In Northern California, Jean Studer

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Speak of the History of California and the part played by the Swiss: imnediately you will have one reaction and one name mentioned: Sutter. For the majority of the people that is the beginning and the end of it. Many books have been written on Sutter, part fiction, part history. There might be here or there a short article of general interest. Add to this the very good book of our Board Member Maurice Edmond Perret, Professor of Geography, Wisconsin State University, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, on ticinesi colonies in California and this is about the sumtotal of the literature which …

Just who are the Swiss who have come to the United States? What was their plce of orgin, what were their motivtions, where did they go, and what impact did they have in their adopted country? Hermann Hesse And The Notion Of The Ful Entity Of Man In The Literature Of Our Century, Albert Bettex

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In 1929, four years before Hitler came to power in Germany, C.G. Jung published an essay on "Women in Europe". In this essay the Swiss psychologist , no doubt a shrewd observer, also deals with a few general aspects of the human situation of that time. He discovers tendencies in the minds of many of his contemporaries . First "a growing disgust at one sided attitudes which do not make sense" . He was thinking, among other things, of the increclible chaos of doubtful, dogmatic philosophies of the late 1920's, many of which were offered as promises of salvation to …

The Trial Of Captain Henry Wirz, 1865: An Attempt Of Rehabilitation, Heinz K. Meier, Lukas F. Burchardt

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The paper read by Dr. A. Maissen at the New York meeting of the SAHS dealt with the interesting subject of Captain Henry Wirz . Although one of the best known Swiss participating in the Civil War, he is not listed among the subjects of the book Prominent Americans of Swiss Origin. This probably was no oversight, for he was and is a controversial figure.

Levi Ward Hancock: Pioneer, Soldier, Political And Religious Leader Of Early Utah, Dennis A. Clegg

Prominent in the pioneering and settlement of early Utah were many men of great ability. Among them was Levi Ward Hancock. He became a dedicated spiritual leader in the Mormon Church.

The life of Levi Hancock began in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 7, 1803. His father moved about quite often in his attempts to provide a better livelihood for his family. Each move took them farther west. It was while they were living in Ohio that the Hancock family heard the Mormon missionaries preach their new gospel. Levi joined this frontier religion.

Joining the Mormon Church changed the whole course …

A Proposal For A Section Of An Lds Church History Textbook For High School Students Containing The History Of The Church From 1898 To 1951, Arthur R. Bassett

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been organized for over one hundred and thirty-six years. The history of nearly a century of that time--1866 to the present--has not been adequately dealt with in any single book currently available for use on the high school level as an L. D. S. seminary text. The objective of this field project was to produce textual materials covering a fifty-three year portion of this period--the portion 1898-1951.

Church history material relative to this period was gathered and organized in a biographical framework centering in the lives and administration of the four …

An Analysis Of Selected Changes In Major Editions Of The Book Of Mormon - 1830-1920, Jeffrey R. Holland Jan 1966

An Analysis Of Selected Changes In Major Editions Of The Book Of Mormon - 1830-1920, Jeffrey R. Holland

Theses and Dissertations

As the title indicates, this thesis is a consideration of selected changes that have been made in major editions of the Book of Mormon. Much has been said recently about changes and modifications in this record but, unfortunately, most of it has been said by those who have been unfriendly toward both the book itself and the church which endorses it. Because this kind of bias is usually an obstruction to objective scholarship, this study has been undertaken by one firmly within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to document not only what changes have been made, but …

Mormon Colonization Of The San Luis Valley, Colorado, 1878-1900, Judson Harold Flower Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In the late 1870's, missionary successes in the southern states prompted the search for a location to which the new converts could migrate and establish their homes among the Saints in "Zion." Elder John Morgan, the most prominent figure in the early missionary work in the South, was given the leading role in bringing southern converts to the settlements which were to be established in the San Luis Valley. The initial settlement of Saints in the valley took place in …
