The Dilemma Of Defining Academic Quality, Norman L. Jones, Linda George Apr 2017

The Dilemma Of Defining Academic Quality, Norman L. Jones, Linda George

History Faculty Publications

Academic quality is part of virtually every university strategic plan as well as the central focus of accreditation standards. In the past, this has often been defined by a series of input measures such as the percentage of faculty with terminal degrees. Today, the call is to identify outcome measures – but which ones? This session will discuss how institutions and systems can define and be held accountable for academic quality in a sea of uncertainty with multiple constituents, and the role of the provost in meeting that challenge.

The Strand Theatre Fire Mar 2017

The Strand Theatre Fire

Nicole Casper

On March 10, 1941, at 12:38 a.m., the Brockton Fire Department responded to Fire Alarm Box 1311, which was pulled for a fire at the Strand Theatre. Fire Alarm dispatched the deputy chief, three engine companies, a ladder company and Squad A. Within six minutes, a second alarm was struck. Less than one hour after the first alarm, the roof of the Strand collapsed, and what appeared to be a routine fire turned into a disaster that killed thirteen firefighters and injured more than twenty others. The disaster marks one of the largest losses of life to firefighters from a …

Developing Intentional Learners: Scaffolding General Education Learning Outcomes, Harrison Kleiner, Norman L. Jones

History Faculty Publications

For more than five years, Utah State University has been engaged in the integration of its orientation, first year experience, general education, and major programs to create intentional learners who understand the academic role and public value of general education. Participa nts will leave the session armed with an understanding of the questions to ask, the processes to implement, and the possible impediments to implementing faculty-driven, student-focused general education curriculum reform on their campus. They will be shown how Utah State …

Leonard was forced to join the military at the age of 17 in his home country of the Congo. A Catholic priest smuggled me out of the country and I lived in refugee camps in several different countries until 2004 when he came to the United States.

In 2005, a couple came to Leonard when he was homeless in the Provo library. They found out that he needed help and offered to let me live with them. They ended up paying my tuition for my education and I went to college for five years.

Leonard uses his experiences to teach …

In Pursuit Of Politics: Education And Revolution In Eighteenth-Century France., Adrian O'Conner Jan 2017

In Pursuit Of Politics: Education And Revolution In Eighteenth-Century France., Adrian O'Conner

Faculty Books

This study offers a new interpretation of the debates over education and politics in the early years of the French Revolution. Following these debates from the 1760s to the Terror (1793–94) and putting well-known works in dialogue with previously-neglected sources, it situates education at the centre of revolutionary contests over citizenship, participatory politics and representative government. The book takes up education’s role in one of history’s most dramatic periods of political uncertainty and upheaval, anxiety and ambition. It traces the convergence of philosophical, political, ideological and practical concerns in Ancien Régime debates and revolutionary attempts to reform education and remake …
