Tools Of Rescue: A Review Of Silencio Para Rescatar: Documental Sonoro, Sonia Robles
RadioDoc Review
In this audio documentary, Mexican cultural promoter and sound artist Abraham Chavelas recounts rescue activities in which he took part after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rattled Mexico on 19 September 2017. Answering a call for help, Chavelas was assigned to a collapsed factory where an unknown number of undocumented Asian and Central American women working as seamstresses were trapped under the rubble. For two days, he aided rescue efforts by using a high-tech microphone to help determine whether or not there was life under piles of concrete, glass and debris. Chavelas used the audio he gathered before the Mexican Marines …
The Role Of Women Within The Mine Wars, Kirsten Hylton
The Role Of Women Within The Mine Wars, Kirsten Hylton
West Virginia University Historical Review
This paper examines the impact that the Mine Wars had on women who lived within the mine camps directly affected by labor unrest. While women were usually not the ones on the front lines of the Mine Wars, they still were impacted by and involved with the action. Just like the men of the camps, women were evicted from their homes, brutalized by mine guards, and were forced to change their lives. Assuming that the events of the Mine Wars were perceived in the same way by both men and women would be leaving out a large portion of the …
Women In Palestinian Folk Tale, Mohammed Dawabsheh
Women In Palestinian Folk Tale, Mohammed Dawabsheh
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
This paper examines the wemen are portrayed in the Palestinian folktales. Of special interest are the so-cial spiritual, psychological and sexual portrayal of women in the roles they assume: mother, sister, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and fellow wife. It also investigates both the negative and positive mythical depictions of women in Palestinian folk tales. Later, the paper draws a comparison between this portrayal and the way women are featured in modern social and psychological science. Inspired by the relevant approaches, particularly the mythical ap-proach, the paper used the descriptive analytical approach.
In Pursuit Of The Sixth Star: An Analysis Of Literature And Tactics From The 1911 California Woman Suffrage Campaign, Sarah Trevino Promnitz
In Pursuit Of The Sixth Star: An Analysis Of Literature And Tactics From The 1911 California Woman Suffrage Campaign, Sarah Trevino Promnitz
History in the Making
California reorganized their efforts and in 1911 campaigned for a state constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the franchise. In order to combat fierce opposition and to increase public awareness of the proposed amendment, California suffrage advocates developed new forms of campaign literature and tactics. An analysis of 1911 suffrage campaign literature uncovers that the campaign was based upon the core arguments of innate womanly virtue and the need to create an inter-class coalition of women dedicated to the suffrage cause. The campaign to gain the franchise was considered a radical movement at the time, and an attempt to alter fundamentally the …

Review Of Nancy F. Cott, The Bonds Of Womanhood: Woman’S Sphere In New England, 1780-1835, Merritt A. Morgan
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Historian Nancy Cott has produced an important work that explores the dialectic between the women’s work and their changing status in reference to the new rhetoric of democracy in the antebellum period. Cott shows us how women perceived themselves and what they said that she expects will lead to a new framework for the interpretation of the concept of womanhood.

The Pattern Of American Society: Treatment Of Korean War Brides In The United States Following The Korean War, Tatiana Moore
The Pattern Of American Society: Treatment Of Korean War Brides In The United States Following The Korean War, Tatiana Moore
Undergraduate Research Journal
While serving overseas in the early to mid-twentieth century, American servicemen often engaged in relationships with foreign women and wanted to bring these women back to the United States as wives. Following the Korean War, many of the more than 6,000 women who married American military men immigrated to the United States. Often referred to as GI War Brides, these women faced discrimination, tried to assimilate into American culture, and struggled to share their stories. Through the examination of government documents, personal stories, and cultural expectations, this paper argues that Korean War Brides’ experiences in America differed very little from …
Imagining Margaret Garner: The Tragic Life Of An American Woman, Cecilia M. Smith
Imagining Margaret Garner: The Tragic Life Of An American Woman, Cecilia M. Smith
History in the Making
There is limited information on the life of the nineteenth century female slave with most details compiled from the narratives of well-known women such as Sojourner Truth. Professor Erlene Stetson and other historians argue that scholars treat slavery as a male phenomenon and the female is merely looked upon as a breeder, while noted African-American activist Angela Davis calls for a more accurate portrayal to debunk derogatory myths. This paper addresses the issue of image with the argument that the enslaved African-American woman possessed no image of her own. It focuses on the story of a runaway female slave named …

Too Much And Too Graphic: Dr. Ruth Westheimer And The Struggle For 1980s And 1990s Feminism, Louisa Marshall
Voces Novae
During the second wave of feminism, spanning from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s, the United States saw unprecedented levels of change regarding the status of women. However, the conservative administrations of Reagan and H.W. Bush that followed turned the tides against the feminist movement and towards re-establishing traditional gender roles. Trail blazing women, including sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer, dedicated their 20th century careers to combating traditional sentiment, thus changing gender roles forever.

Consider The Source: The Media’S Coverage Of Female Fbi Agents In The 1970s, Kali Devarennes
The Forum: Journal of History
This paper explores the representation of female FBI agents in newspapers throughout the 1970s until the early 1990s. While this subject is not widely discussed, due to lack of exposure and research, this paper reveals how crucial these women were during this period as they redefined how society and male FBI agents viewed women in previously male-dominated fields. In 1970, the media responded to these women with a variety of assumptions and stereotypes defining women as sex objects, physically weak, and mentally unable to handle the dangerous work environment. Through examination of scholarly and primary sources, this paper uncovers the …
Disordered Women? The Hospital Sisters Of Mainz And Their Late Medieval Identities, Lucy C. Barnhouse
Disordered Women? The Hospital Sisters Of Mainz And Their Late Medieval Identities, Lucy C. Barnhouse
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Debates over the identity of women’s religious communities have exercised historians no less than late medieval canonists and officials. Even as the legal regulation of such communities increased, so, paradoxically, did the diversity of forms that such communities took. Although these trends have been the subject of much historical attention, the division of mixed-gender hospital communities which occurred across Europe in the thirteenth century has not hitherto been integrated into such studies. I attempt to redress this lacuna by examining the contested religious identity of the hospital sisters of Mainz. Forced to leave the mixed-gender staff of the city’s Heilig …

Mercy Otis Warren: Republican Scribe And Defender Of Liberties, Mary Kathryn Mueller
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
An active proponent of republican government, Mercy Otis Warren had a significant role in the revolutionary period. She was a woman who was close to the action, well-acquainted with the central figures, and instrumental in bringing about the monumental changes in America in the late 1700s. Referred to as the “muse of the revolution,”[1] Mercy Otis Warren used her pen to significantly broaden the colonial understanding of a republican form of government and passionately promote it. From a collection of early poems and political satires written in the years preceding the war to her epic history of the revolution published …
Western Reconstruction And Woman Suffrage, Lorianne Updike Toler
Western Reconstruction And Woman Suffrage, Lorianne Updike Toler
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
The normal narrative of woman suffrage in the United States begins in Seneca Falls, New York, and steadily marches along through the lives and papers of the most noteworthy national suffragettes—Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and a handful of other women until the hard-fought passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. The six-volume History of Woman Suffrage tomes tells just such a story.
Yet the dominant narrative “overgeneralizes the experiences of the national, largely eastern leadership” and “generally neglect[s] the West, or fail[s] to evaluate its significance within the national movement.” Although the American Woman Suffrage Association was organized …

“Don't Forget”: The Life And Role Of Arab American Women In The Early 20th Century, Caitlin Gannam, Jonathan Sciarcon
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
While Arab American women have often been excluded from the narrative of the Arab American community, they have had lasting influence on the nature and development of the American identity. As mothers, teachers, and supporters of the community, Arab American women have been active cultural influences, despite social restrictions and a lack of formal power.
