This collection contains photographic prints, newspaper clippings, conference programs, photocopies from various sources, military records, booklets, original essays, and more most likely compiled by Ralph Rogers Wheeler (1918-2004), an Alabama native. Items relate to Wheeler’s life and especially his military service and time as a Japanese prisoner of war. Beginning in 1942, he was first housed in a prison camp in the Philippines, and then sent via ship to a prison camp near Osaka, Japan. He was rescued in 1945 after Japan’s surrender. The 39th Infantry Regiment fought as part of the 9th Infantry Division during World War II. This chonicle is a diary of the Regiment's daily operations and actions as it progressed across Europe during 1944 and 1945. The chronicle is portrayed from the vantage point of Richard B. Kann (father of the author) and Dale E. Smith, who served as medics in the 39th Infantry Regiment during that time.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 196. Letters sent to Stone and his mother, Nelle Stone, Bowling Green, Kentucky, during World War II from friends in armed service around the world. Includes letters, holiday greeting cards, telegrams, V-mail and postcards. Almost all correspondents were members of a local fraternal club known as the Senators which was composed of graduates of Bowling Green High School.
